A few weeks ago I contacted a bloke that I found selling a worn out 109” Series 1. This vehicle was well and truly past any type of restoration project but would provide me with a heap of spares for my project (ol-ute).:) Even though I was only really interested in the wheels, PTO bits and the front prop shaft; she was going to provide me with more parts for the shed and give the other half something to talk about (albeit not favourable). Not to mention the bits that I could trade or pass onto those interested blokes around me.;)

Anyway, whilst I was cutting this thing up the owner told me about his neighbour (10 km or so away) that used to have a couple of the ‘really short ones’ and he may be interested in parting with them. Not being backwards in coming forward – I asked him all about them and if he would contact this bloke for me :)…. Some 2 weeks later (and only the one reminder) he has done it.

I have been put onto an old farmer who has 3 SWB Series 1’s that he wants me to offer him some cash for (god knows how much at this point in time). All that I can find out is: 1 drives (still uses it) but needs a water pump, the second would drive if I gave her some fuel and put the replacement rear diff in her and the third was bought some time ago for spares. The two that are/were used have been knocked about a bit whilst I should find some straight panels on the ‘spare thing’.

Quizzing him about years etc provided not much as he doesn’t know the answer. He did say that he believes that the Landy’s all have the little gauge surround in the centre of the dash and he reckons they all have the ‘mesh bit’ in the front. There are no PTO bits with them and he made the point that all seats were buggered. But he is certain that they are 'the really short ones' :D:D:D

I may be set for a disappointment but he has me interested. I know that there is no room at home for another one (or two) Land Rovers but I have to take a look any way. Tomorrow I shall be off to see what they are really like.

Pictures and a report shall follow.

The mesh front sound like the ones up to mid 1950 build although could be talking up to the end of 1951.

When we are talking about these early ones, pics are great but numbers are better - as many numbers* as you can get! :) :) :)

If a Grenville Motors NSW vehicle, we may even be able to share some information on them for you.

Well the trip produced 3 series 1's but not as I was hoping :no2: But then - you've gotta be in it to win it they say.

Anyway I did see a pretty good 1952 series 1 (80") that I am thinking about:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/06/463.jpg

It seems to be in pretty good knick with front springs gone, dents (as expected) and in need of a lot of TLC.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/06/486.jpg

Has the original motor with a leaky water pump but it does go. :D:D

Any comments or discussion on this one would be welcome as I can have it for $500. As I want one - but know very little about them, I am all-ears. :D

Now For The Wrecks

Two (what I make out to be) 1955 86" vehicles. The bronze one was bought for parts to get the blue one going. And now we have them left where the worked stopped some time ago. Both axle housings and suspension etc from the rear have been removed and never swapped over. I am guessing that he just got 'jack' of it :)

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/06/484.jpg

The motor in the blue one was rebuilt some years ago and is the best of the 3 Landy's:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/06/485.jpg

There are a heap of spares (ignore the hood bow as I have already grabbed it), wheels and doors and stuff.

The bloke wants $600 for the lot of this stuff but would be prepared to split it up and consider other offers. If anyone is interested you can pm me. ;)

And now for the best bit - he knows of a local fella who has a heap of series 1's that he may be happy to part with, is onto some PTO stuff for me and to top it off has a mate with a 2A SWB Fire Tender in a shed doing nothing. This one has gotta be checked out....

the 80" looks as good as I would expect to find these days.

The 86" (multiple) are less attractive as there are still a few about. althought if you placed the axle under it and placed some wheels and tyres on it the one with the hard cab looks as thought it could have some life breath back into it.

One thing about collecting, you have to be where the collectables are and as for LRs that is in the country.

Thanks all - I am only interested in the 80" and may see if he will consider less for it yet.

As I have enough spares for the moment the other two are up for grabs by anyone else; he will split them and (as I told him), may have to be prepared to go a lot less to part with them.

There are more photos in the Victorian Gallery SectionOn the engine front all the important difficult to acquire bits like the air cleaner to carby bits are there. The cyclonic pre-filters are still available as replacements for Fergy tractors.

I would be considering the Solex carbs and any of the bakelite horn centres off the others if they are going to the scrappers.

Getting back to the Tractor - olmate can you please send me a PM with your contact details as I am keen to see if the tractor has 3pl arms (broke mine last week). The local tractor wrecker will only sell a complete linkage kit (will not seperate) and they want a fortune........

Also do you have a closer picture of what is written on the front wing of the 80'

Who decided where the top of the Universe is anyway?

This is a classic representation of Australia being at the top of the world to counter the argument of "down under".

Well all - the blue 86" Series 1 was taken today along with a heap of extra bits (well done Dave). There is still the bronze one left with a truck cab for it, all the rims, spare axles and some rear springs - if anyone is interested. It shall be going to the scrap yard soon if no interest is shown.

For those who where interested, I have attached a photo of the writing on the side of the bronze 86" Series 1:

And Wayne - here is a couple of photos of the PTO on the tractor for you:

Sorry Digger, I have been a bit pre-occupied with my 80” and have failed to follow up on a couple other ‘very interesting’ items that cropped up when I initially found these 3 x Series 1’s at Doug’s place.

I have asked Doug about the Series 2 Fire Tender and know that it belongs to a friend of his in/near Holbrook. Being very keen to at least take a look at it; I have asked him to find out if I am welcome and then put me in contact with the person who owns it… I have not followed it up but I shall find out. Photos will be a must if I am successful in taking a look at it. My initial understanding was that this bloke may be interested in selling it and I was going to offer putting it on the forum for sale. I don’t know much else and may be proven wrong – will have to wait and see.

Now with the ‘yard of spares’ – we have pretty well cleaned out what was located on Doug’s place and I am in the process of meeting the next bloke who has more Series 1’s and (fingers crossed) PTO gear. As I have been spoilt at this farm I have not pushed things when it has come to meeting the next bloke. Doug does know that I am (as he has said) ‘mad-keen’ when it comes to Series Landy’s and is aware that I want some PTO gear in particular, so I was just going to wait a bit. He reckons that this Fella has a number of old Landy’s which could be very good. I shall be seeing Doug in a couple of weeks and will be asking him again then. And I promise that I shall put up some photos…. :D:D:D

I can now add a little bit more to this :). Doug has now taken a look at what had been described as a 'yard of series 1 spares' and has confirmed that they are series 2 / 2a. Bit of a shame really :( but something to put away until I need something for olmate.

He has told me that he is onto the 2A Fire Tender and shall (hopefully) find out more in the following weeks. It belonged to the (his) local CFA in previous years and was retired to a shed on a property near Holbrook. Since this time the place has been sold off to the forrestry dept and the vehicle is now left just to waste away - it seems. He had recently had a visit from a friend up that way who confirmed that the Landy was still in the spot where it was left but knew nothing about its pump etc. Doug will be up that way in the next few weeks and shall try to get out to where it is and find someone who can let me know what is going on with it.:D

Here's hoping ;)

Troy,

Many thanks for putting us onto the Bronze 86", have just returned from collecting it.
It will provide some useful spares for my S1, the bulkhead looks usable, not sure yet about the engine & gearbox until I start unbolting things.

Saw a Series 2 shorty (may have been a S3) in a trailer heading down the Hume being towed by a Disco and I'm sure I saw JDNSW joining the Hume at Albury.
Heading back home we got a lot of heads turning as cars passed and the occasional thumbs up from passengers.

Good one Colin

Don't you find it interesting, I don't think I have ever seen an early Land Cru... being towed for an apparent restoration.

At the NRMA motorfest on Aussie Day, we even had a bloke come up and ask if he could join tthe LROCS and get historic rego, he made the comment that no one in the TLC Club seemed to have any interest in old Toy...s.

The 'Bronze' Series 1 turned out to be green that had faded to bronze, maybe that's why they call it bronze green ?

Engine rotates and there's oil in the gearbox although the filler cap has rusted through so there may be water inside. Chassis has been straightened after an accident, steering box has rusted solid.

Haven't checked chassis number to determine the manufacture date yet so a quick question regarding the engine, can you determine whether it's a spreadbore engine or not without taking it apart ?

I'll put any parts I don't need in Markets once she's stripped down.

The paddock full of spares still sounds good anyway (says me with 3 of them!) any hope of a set of hoops??? or maybe tool holders????
If so REMEMBER ME! (PLEEASSE:angel:)
The fire tender sounds good anyway, wayne ellard is pretty spiff with them, his 2 are fairly schmiko so he may be able to give advice or if its knackered utilise parts!

keep up the good work!

Hello Colin,

Yes you can there are many ways. Where is the Exhaust outlet on the exhaust manifold in the middle or towards the front of the engine? Also you can tell by the oil filter. Early 2.0L engines still had the Bypass oil filter system carried over from the 1.6L Engine. The later 2.0L engine has a full flow system. And the filter should look like this:
http://abcentral.zapto.org/55/DSCF2760.JPG

Or whats the engine number that would be the best way.
It can be found here:

Thanks Alex,

Just checked on Calvin and it is a 1955 CKD. Full flow filter and exhaust outlet at the front of the manifold so it's a spreadbore and therefore a potential donor for my '56.

There was a spare exhaust manifold in the tray with a central outlet so I guess that's from the earlier engine.....

For those who were following this thread I can now let you know that the trail has come to an end. The Paddock of Series 1’s has ‘potentially’ produced a Rear PTO unit for me however, the rest – I can’t get to (both Doug and I are sick of trying). The bloke does have a lot of spares but he doesn’t want to share the joy.

As for the 2A Fire Tender. This is on a property further north of Albury (near Holbrook). The property has been sold in recent years and I am having no luck chasing down who owns it; to the point where I am bordering on becoming a nuisance to the blokes giving me a hand – So I have stopped pursuing this as well. As with all these types of things something may just come up out of the blue later on. If something does come up, I will definitely post it here.
