    3 in a row

A few weeks ago I contacted a bloke that I found selling a worn out 109” Series 1. This vehicle was well and truly past any type of restoration project but would provide me with a heap of spares for my project (ol-ute). Even though I was only really interested in the wheels, PTO bits and the front prop shaft; she was going to provide me with more parts for the shed and give the other half something to talk about (albeit not favourable). Not to mention the bits that I could trade or pass onto those interested blokes around me.

Anyway, whilst I was cutting this thing up the owner told me about his neighbour (10 km or so away) that used to have a couple of the ‘really short ones’ and he may be interested in parting with them. Not being backwards in coming forward – I asked him all about them and if he would contact this bloke for me …. Some 2 weeks later (and only the one reminder) he has done it.

I have been put onto an old farmer who has 3 SWB Series 1’s that he wants me to offer him some cash for (god knows how much at this point in time). All that I can find out is: 1 drives (still uses it) but needs a water pump, the second would drive if I gave her some fuel and put the replacement rear diff in her and the third was bought some time ago for spares. The two that are/were used have been knocked about a bit whilst I should find some straight panels on the ‘spare thing’.

Quizzing him about years etc provided not much as he doesn’t know the answer. He did say that he believes that the Landy’s all have the little gauge surround in the centre of the dash and he reckons they all have the ‘mesh bit’ in the front. There are no PTO bits with them and he made the point that all seats were buggered. But he is certain that they are 'the really short ones'

I may be set for a disappointment but he has me interested. I know that there is no room at home for another one (or two) Land Rovers but I have to take a look any way. Tomorrow I shall be off to see what they are really like.

Pictures and a report shall follow.

The mesh front sound like the ones up to mid 1950 build although could be talking up to the end of 1951.

When we are talking about these early ones, pics are great but numbers are better - as many numbers* as you can get!

If a Grenville Motors NSW vehicle, we may even be able to share some information on them for you.

    * Chassis numbers, engine numbers, gearbox numbers or even axle housing numbers although they are less important.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Well the trip produced 3 series 1's but not as I was hoping But then - you've gotta be in it to win it they say.

Anyway I did see a pretty good 1952 series 1 (80") that I am thinking about:

It seems to be in pretty good knick with front springs gone, dents (as expected) and in need of a lot of TLC.

Has the original motor with a leaky water pump but it does go.

Any comments or discussion on this one would be welcome as I can have it for $500. As I want one - but know very little about them, I am all-ears.

There are more photos in the Victorian Gallery Section

    Now For The Wrecks

Two (what I make out to be) 1955 86" vehicles. The bronze one was bought for parts to get the blue one going. And now we have them left where the worked stopped some time ago. Both axle housings and suspension etc from the rear have been removed and never swapped over. I am guessing that he just got 'jack' of it

The motor in the blue one was rebuilt some years ago and is the best of the 3 Landy's:

There are a heap of spares (ignore the hood bow as I have already grabbed it), wheels and doors and stuff.

The bloke wants $600 for the lot of this stuff but would be prepared to split it up and consider other offers. If anyone is interested you can pm me.

And now for the best bit - he knows of a local fella who has a heap of series 1's that he may be happy to part with, is onto some PTO stuff for me and to top it off has a mate with a 2A SWB Fire Tender in a shed doing nothing. This one has gotta be checked out....

the 80" looks as good as I would expect to find these days.

The 86" (multiple) are less attractive as there are still a few about. althought if you placed the axle under it and placed some wheels and tyres on it the one with the hard cab looks as thought it could have some life breath back into it.

One thing about collecting, you have to be where the collectables are and as for LRs that is in the country.

Thanks all - I am only interested in the 80" and may see if he will consider less for it yet.

As I have enough spares for the moment the other two are up for grabs by anyone else; he will split them and (as I told him), may have to be prepared to go a lot less to part with them.

On the engine front all the important difficult to acquire bits like the air cleaner to carby bits are there. The cyclonic pre-filters are still available as replacements for Fergy tractors.

I would be considering the Solex carbs and any of the bakelite horn centres off the others if they are going to the scrappers.

Whats the go with the door decal - an upside down mape of Australia?

Getting back to the Tractor - olmate can you please send me a PM with your contact details as I am keen to see if the tractor has 3pl arms (broke mine last week). The local tractor wrecker will only sell a complete linkage kit (will not seperate) and they want a fortune........

Also do you have a closer picture of what is written on the front wing of the 80'

    All the best

    Wayne
