Just got my fully comp. insurance renewal for a 98 Defender, amount covered $11,300 for a premium of $545, (a higher premium than when it was insured for $37,000 when I first bought it!) a drop of $5000 odd from last year including most of the accessories bull bar, winch, driving lights etc. on tallying up the accessories and modifications I came to the cost value, not replacement value of $15,880.
On talking to the insurance company the best value I could get was $16,000 about what it was valued last year for $571
What are others paying for Defenders of the same vintage?

Jee you need to tell them ,they must be mistaken, as you wanted car insurance and not part ownership of their company . :)

I'm over 40 and I live in inner west, Sydney - surely that shouldn't be too detrimental.

Should not be
I am 36 live in brisbane and have a truck that as a personal import most companys will not insure anyway. And my fully comp is $450 from shannons (as they are pretty much all who will insure a personal import)

I'm in the process of renewing my insurance on the Defender, 1995 110 with 250,000km. Got a valuation from local Landrover dealer of $17,000, which is the same as I paid for it 2 years ago:D, gotta love Defenders. The premium including glass buy out, full comp insurance with agreed value is $425. The insurance co tried to drop the value to $15,200, but had no problems raising it up to $17,000 again with the note from Landrover.:D The difference in premium from $15,200 up to 17,000 was $4.00, well worth it I think. ;)

RACV insures my Disco Tdi for market value for an 18yr male $1550 premium:(:(
The lady joked that it would be around $1250 if I was a female, do you think I should consider gender reassignment?

Reads, what makes a personal import a higher/specialist risk, compared to a 'normal' vehicle?

Ah, if you're anywhere near Leichhardt, that'd be my fault, five car thefts, and four of them in the last five years.
Cheers
Simon
And that's cars stolen from me, not by me, thanks Ron.:D

lol, I know the feeling I am paying just less then you for my disco and it's a ****ty policy. When I went to get full comp on my motorcycle they wanted 50% of the bikes value for insurance cause of age. They were saying I had a 50/50 chance of a big accident pretty much. So, I bought a bike 1/3rd of the cost, lol.

I don't know and would like to know myself. But RACQ, SUNCORP, NRMA won't touch them . I said that all the parts for the car were here . But makes no differance. They must just lump all persnally imported cars into the same lot. Hence why we are with shannons as they will insure a personal import

I thought it was simply because a personal import has a higher probability of not being replaceable in a write-off and much greater parts availability difficulties and costs. Maybe most of the parts are here, but good luck finding another 90 soft-top like that.

I just had a look on AAMI and they have the 90 Extreme as a model.
Assumed a 2004 model 2 door and it came back with:
2004 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90 EXTREME TURBO F/IN 2D WAGON DT5 CYL 2.5L 5 SP MANUAL
However, putting in year 2000 doesn't bring up the 90.

Yikes! I'm only paying about $900 for my 2007 Freelander 2 and I'm 24 so I still have age excess and premiums to pay.
