Run...quickly,and don't look back at it.

That model has some big engine issues ( do a search ), if you want a Freelander look for Diesel or the V6, those are pretty good engines..

Ray

arrgh!, Ignore my comments, I just read the add properly, it's a diesel!, i think it should be o.k then?

all diesel freelanders = Good, well so long as your not in a hurry, early petrols =
bad.

theres a few problems with the center diff's clutches and rear diff mounts that I know of but as the vehicle doesnt offer what I need and I dont see many of them I dont know too many specifics about it.

This is a base model (Di) that has been optioned up to XEDI specs with the exception of the wheels - still steel wheels.

These are very good cars but do have one major design fault that you can monitor and correct if a problem develops.

Landrover got the front diff ratio wrong and it works the Viscous Coupling (VC) causing to fail (lock up) which in turn causes the intermediate reduction drive (IRD) (the equivalent of the transfer case) to fail. If this has already happened on this then the problem is fixed.

Thankfully this does not happen over night so having the VC checked every service and ensuring all tyres have equal wear by proper tyre rotation the issue can be identified in advance. Just replace the VC - expensive in Australia but relatively cheap if inported from the UK.

Overall these are exceptionally reliable - mine has 235,000km and is running really well.

An Di is worth about 8K in very good nick with the ks on this - an XEDI about $9k

As per the comment - 'if not in a hurry' - they are much quicker than a Disco/Fender TDI or TD5 and much more fuel efficent.

sorry to disagree but they are not quicker than the TD5 unless every one I test drove for some reson wasnt letting the handbrake off or had something wrong with it and they are not hugely more fuel effecient either when you start weighting them up. with a big trailer on the back they are somewhat thirstier than a Deefer but I cant pass comment against the disco towing a large trailer.

That said, They were never ment to haul the larger trailers on great distances, neither were they ment to be terrain clambering acceleration monkeys.

Its all relevent to what you need. if you want to haul a 2t shed trailer to hell and back and do it with no fuel and can happily live with dust noise and a turning circle that only bulk ore carriers and bigger ships get envious of you get a deefer, if you want it smallish effecient comfortable quiet with enough off road capability to put a rav 4 to shame and tow a small boat/camper/trailer you get a freelander.
