G'day all

Just wondering if anybody knows who makes/sells a water tank to fit behind the rear wheel on the passenger side of a tdi defender. Its a decent space that i'd like to fill. A plastic/aluminium/stainless steel tank, i'm not particularly fussy.

thanks, Jamie

I believe 4WD Megastore carry a (appox) 40litre tank to fit inside the guard.
Also have a lok at FRONT RUNNER 4x4 TECHNOLOGY - front runner 4x4 accessories ROOFRACKS&ACCESSORIES rooftop tents storage systems fridges freezers fuel tanks awnings camping winch towbars (http://www.frontrunner.co.za) ( Sth Africa ). similar tank

It will still work out cheaper to import from S Africa than buy local.

There was a thread a while back, ( last 2 - 3 months ) somebody on this forum had fitted a tank and had photo's

I have the Frontrunner type as I am in S Africa. Works a treat. If you like I will take some pics and post them. Let me know.

Hi, That Front Runner tank is available from Dolium Dolium PTY Ltd (http://www.dolium.com.au/view?command=cman_view_webpage&action=view&webpage_id=88&pkey=dolium) in perth. I belive that they are the importers and also supply to Opposite Lock.

The old defenders can fit a 40 lt tank, but the 07 defenders can only fit 32 lt due to the different hieght of the wheel arches to allow the 3rd row seating

not sure who told you that craig as pretty sure ours is 45ltr

and it even states it on the website that you posted a link to

Dolium PTY Ltd (http://www.dolium.com.au/view/page/120/item/FTL49.html)

and as far as i'm also aware there is no difference in height to the seat boxes only that the 07 hasn't got a right angle on it any more like the old ones it slants away to compensate for the 3rd row of seats

looking at them looks like there maybe a little loss in height i'm not sure maybe we should measure them:D
i also think that the carpet makes the drop look worse than it is...because i dont think it looks that bad with out the carpet

That's funny cause the tank the link refers to is a fuel tank not a water tank. On their site the water tank for the Puma is shown as 32L where as the older model is a 40L.

As already stated, Dolium (in Perth) are the importers, Opposite Lock are the distributors and they are the Front Runner ones from South Africa.

I still can't understand why they have to be so expensive here. I've got the rear quater panel tank and the 50 litre cargo barrier tank in my Defender.

Postage from South Africa is cheaper than postage within Australia, the rear tank cost me $50 to have posted. I had to buy the other tank locally after the aforementioned complaints.

i cannot remember how much the behind the wheel tanks cost but if you do not have adults inthe back seat you could do something like i did.

more capicity lees $$$

It would be cheaper for someone in SA to post direct to people here, than for someone to freight them across and then post them around Australia.

The water tank I got from SA cost $50 for Sea Freight. To post it from Melbourne to Perth would have cost me $110. Being able to save the 14%VAT from SA due to the fact that it was an export helped offset postage costs, the other advantage was the SA Post will deliver up to 30kg packages with no dimensional limitations, unlike Auspost have.

Thanks to all for the ideas, it has given me something to ponder. i'm not quite sure which way to go. A position on the floor in front of the rear seats has real merit as my little boy is only three months old (no long legs there yet!). Perhaps a slide in bladder type tank might be a good alternative for that particular space. It warrants further investigation.

once again thanks to all

i'm sure i have seen a setup with a water bladder in the foot well with a piece of ply sitting on the metal work just behing the front seats extending across to the raise bit under the rear seats

i was going to do this but by the the time i added up the purchase of a bladder and ply i was not far off what i ended up with, i was lucky and had a full fabrication workshop to knock it up in

Search for water bladders on ebay, there's a Victorian company advertising there Yana Bladder Tanks (http://www.yana.com.au) that can make them to order. Their 35 litre bladders start at $90 on ebay (Buy It Now for $103.50) and their 80 litre bladders start at $120 (Buy it Now for $158).

Unless you can import the 35 litre bladders from South Africa (I think they work out at around $40AUDea) then this company seems to have the best local prices. I haven't bought off them, I've just been doing some research.

forgot to mention....have a read of Bushie's simpson desert trip, he mention one of the cars had a problem with hole/s in the water bladder

sounded like it was simple enough to repair

Yeah that was me. The bladder I fitted was a 75 litre one I bought from ARB. I then got some heavy duty underlay and made a sock for it.

The small holes - which were only a weep in two small spots, was caused when my lovely wife put the small stool we use to see into the fridge between the bladder and the door. This worked its way into the sock on the very smooth trip (not) on the Madigans Line. 2 small inner tube patches and Ron's your harmonica player.

IMHO the bladder is a great option if you are not using the back seat for passengers or your passengers are little tackers. A piece of ply over the floor well for kids to stand on would cover all bases. I will get a photo and post this when my home computer gets back from the technos - viruses from my son's downloads.

You could also get a smaller 40 litre bladder which would fit under the back seat in a 200 or 300 Tdi
