Gday all,
I am thinking about rebuilding the 4cyl series 3 petrol engine i have lying around in my spares landy. It was running a year ago, but it is in a pretty sad state at the moment as the landy has been out in the weather.
What sort of cost am i looking at to buy the parts that are usualy required for a rebuild?
Are there any parts that are hard to find, or cost a small fortune?
Thanks in advance
Cheers

It has been a few years since I have done one (2002/3 was the last), but all parts were/are available, and a full rebuild (rebore, OS pistons, all new bearings, seals, etc, etc) used to set me back $600ish. Usually cost around $200 to get an engine shop to rebuild the head (with hardened valve seats), and about $100 to clean the block and regrind the crank.

Thats less than i thought it would be, Wonder if the prices are still similar.

it cost me <$1K to redo the engine that now resides in Fozzy, did everything but the injectors and the pump....
However I did all the block work myself as the bores were still good as was the mains journals...
If you need to do a complete re-alignment and line bore it can get fairly exxy but even all of that including new pots, rods, k lining the valves and converting to stainless seats you should get change out of $2.5k.

Bearing sizes up to and including 0.030" are easy to obtain. I could not find 0.040" bearings. Good thing I was able to grind my crank to 0.030". I also needed a set of 0.040" rings. These were incredibly expensive. I think they were around $280 in Australia, and around $270 from England. I ended up getting generic rings from JP Pistons for around $160. I needed three compression rings, and you will only need two, so your amount will be less.

ok sounds a lot cheaper than I expected. Are there any engine shops that anyone would recommend, or ones that specialize on Rover engines (in Brisbane).
Cheers

Keep an eye out on eBay, I picked up a set of new Diesel Pistons for $60, a set of new Valve Springs for $25, Gasket sets are reasonable, should be able to get a set of rings cheaper than above, $140 to bore standard block to 40 thou over, Regards Frank.

I tried all the aftermarket specialist parts suppliers, and most of them could not get 0.040" rings. The few that could quoted the high prices. I took my pistons to JP Pistons. They then measured them, and found generic rings that would fit. I think they make them on site in small quantities, hence the price. If you can find 0.040" rings on the shelf, I would like to know where from.

I think the last set of pistons I bought from FWD Motors were 0.020" or 0.030", but they were dirt cheap. However they had every size from 0.020-0.080" (either in stock or able to be ordered - and not too $$$). A mate even bought 0.060" ACL pistons (with rings) for about the same price as your rings cost!!!
However - prices have probably gone up in recent times, in line with the increased metals prices...
In Brisbane, I would reccommend FWD at Yeerongpilly for parts. I used to get all my machining work (boring/honing, crank grinding, cylinder heads) done by this place:
Jondav Engines
3507 Pacific Hwy, Slacks Creek, QLD 4127
p: (07) 3808 1100
Not LR specialists, but I was always 100% happy with the work they did for me.

I am a regular at FWD motors, so i will price up some stuff there i think. Usually pretty happy with them.
I will look into that engine shop too.

Thanks Dave, i will have a think about it. I have not stripped down or taken the engine out of my other landy yet so i will have see what kind of condition mine is in first.
I don't yet have a specific use for the engine, i am just thinking of a future project landy, might as well start with the powerplant :p

that being the case I have a chassis that IVe turned into a runup bench that I used to use for testing 2.25l engines and the transmissions on, if youd like to borrow that It can be arranged.

By the way, there seem to be a fair few special tools listed in the workshop manual, How many of these are actually required? I'm guessing a bit of fiddley use of common tools could make do in most situations!;)

When I last rebuilt my engine, the only specialty tools that I used were a ring expander, a ring compressor (get the wrinkle band type rather than the cheap one) and some plastiguage. I large socket will take the starting dog from the front of the crankshaft. I did hone my engine myself, but most people get this done by the machine shop when they get the block bored. You will also need a torque wrench, chain block or engine crane, engine stand and feeler guages. I consider these essential rather than specialty tools.

Thanks Aaron.
I have pretty much most of that, so i think I'm set.
Just need to find the time to get it all done now :(

Does anyone know the weight of a complete 2.25P?
What about just the assembled motor? ie without carby, inlet & exhaust manifolds, starter, alternator & dizzy?
Thanks

If you buy that set from the UK you will need to remove the rings from the pistons (they state pistons with rings fitted) and check their gap clearance in each corresponding bore, don't trust that the rings are already gapped from factory, each and every compression ring must be checked in it's bore before fitting to that bore's piston, number your pistons with texta so you dont mix them up, Regards Frank.

Yep, if i end up getting that kit i will definitely be checking everything is to size before it goes in.
