Hey All
I have developed a creak in the back of the disco after my recent Simpson trip. It is noticeable when going over rough terrain and when the vehicle flex's (ie articulating over stuff). It a D2.
At first I thought it was my cargo barrier and drawer system. However I have tightened everything up and it still creaks. I thought it might have been the new steel bar I fitted to the rear, but this should be causing these sorts of sounds.
It actually sounds like creaking panels or trim, as if when you flex it is rubbing. Any ideas? I have heard of cracked chassis', B pillar cracking and roof cracking as well. Could it be one of these? What should I look for?
Anyone else had this symptom?

Hey Angus, how load is the noise? After my Simmo crossing last year, bulldust made my tail lights creak in the body panels. Removed them and cleaned throughly and no more noise. The noise was noticable in the car when moving and it was between a creak and a squeak.

Try a bit of grease on the catch or bolt where the rear door locks onto the body. My D1 creaks from this when it gets dry.

After Madigans, mine had creaks caused by a broken rear coil spring and a back-seat door stay that needed lubricating.

Hmm...yeah that makes sense. There is a lot of dust back there...will check it out.

Will look at that too...

Yeah I remember you saying this Graeme...I have thought about it. Will have a look, but it sounds more like a body creak.

Check for cracks in the chassis behind the coil mounts.

This Angus is where i'd look too, that's where mine cracked, from what Bruce Davis told me and looking at it, it seems it was caused by the car continually hitting the bump stops, but ithink it started after hitting a washout on the road too the Dig Tree, it was a big hit, cause it set the Inersia switch off:eek:
I also broke an engine mount too:mad:

Any idea of cost for fixing something like this? I hope its not this...

Mine (D11 2003) always had a slight "squeek" from somewhere atthe rear end, never checked it out, but a recent trip to Fraser and it developed a real loud "squark"-- sorry about the sound effects--- when going over speed bumps and before having a good look went back to the "squeek".
I suspect dried out and ageing rubber bushes, will check all this out soon and I hope thats all your probs.

If none of the other possibilities in the previous posts, check for broken/cracked body mounts - look carefully with a good light, around the body mounts on the rear cross member and the sills in front of the rear wheel arches.
IMHO, Disco's are not as robust as classic rangies in these (and other) areas.

And I have a receipt from getting my chassis straightened to prove Bush65's theory. Bloody expensive one too.

It's not that expensive to repair a crack, as they don't weld it together but a plate is welded to the chassis over the crack, it has too be a certain shape too for added strength, my repair was around $400, but that included other work and it was Bruce Davis, he tends to be a tad on the expensive side.

I have much the same thing in my D1 and it drives me nuts, as the car is otherwise quiet. I noticed mine stops squeeking in the rain, so I gathered it was the rear door moving around against the door seal when dry and thus un-lubricated.
More of a creaking really.
I spray silicone onto the door seal and that stops it for a while before it returns again.
Today I stuck gaffer tape all round the inside of the door where it touches the seal and we'll see how this goes. I have been told that if Armorall or such gets onto rear door seals they squeek like crazy.
Complicating things for me is a squeek from the LPG tanks in the back: these tanks sit a little too far back and the rear of the whole unit actually presses slightly into the rear door trim. I often wonder if this is causing my rear door squeek and my LPG tank squeek.
I'm going to take the spare off the rear door soon, too, and see if that makes a difference.
