Toyota 22R engine probs

Hey all,

I know its off topic but my cousin bought a cruiser with a 22R petrol engine. It kept boiling over so he flushed the cooling system and discovered that someone had removed the centre of the thermostat [ie butchered it].

I reckon it sounds like a typical head gasket problem - the coolant overflow tank bubbles like a jacuzzi when started up and coolant is flooding out the exhaust pipe.

Any ideas he/I may have missed?

The 22R is notorious for cylinder head failures. Call around the wrecking yards for a good head and you will find that virtually none have engines with good heads, and those that do want $1000-$1200 for the head! You can get after-market heads from the USA for around US$400 plus freight etc.

I opened up one from a mate's Tojo about two months ago. His cook was driving it from Maryborough to Brisbane when it "started running badly and made noises". She made the executive decision to keep driving it as she "had to get to mum's and didn't want to be stuck at the side of the highway". Stuck she certainly was as hubby and I had to retrieve it with a hired trailer. The inlet manifold, two cylinders, and the sump were full of coolant, bent rod, bent crank.

Thanks Brian. Sounds like the same sort of issues. Christ, a quick google of "22R head gasket" found 15k hits:D.

Hopefully the head will be OK, he is planning to strip it down on Friday. In the meantime I'll say not to drive it to Brisbane:p

The 22r is about the most useless engine to fit to a 4x4, aswell as being very unreliable and fuel hungry, it is torquless and prone to these above mentioned head failures.

No wonder the Roluxes etc get V6 commodore engine conversions when faced with the repair cost of one of these things!

Mate might be useless information but some toyota corona's came out with the 22r engine might be cheaper to pick up a whole car than just to buy a head.

might find that ellusive car driven to church on sunday by a 60 year old lady.
just a thought anyway.
