With SWMBO off to Europe next month the 'quid pro quo' is that Deano can have a new camera. Well, I've done it. Strike whilst the iron's hot I say. I've gone and bought a second hand D300 and whilst nothing was said about lenses I took this green light to mean that it was OK to pick up a couple of lenses too. AF Nikkor 35mm 1:2D and AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED VR. Unfortunately the budget didn't stretch to the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 or the SB600 that was also for sale. Might have been tempted if it was a Tokina 12-24mm though.............
The D300 has less than 10K shots on the clock and it and the lenses have never left the studio and are in excellent condition. The zoom lens hasn't left its box!
Havn't played with the zoom yet but the 35mm is great.
One day on and I can't believe how good the D300 is, not that there's anything wrong with my D70 it's just that the D300 is better. So much easier to use, none of those silly 'modes' and such just easily accessible well laid out dials and buttons, easier to use though similiar to the D70 and I find it much easier to use than Kayes D80.
Is there a reason why the manual exposure display is back the front ? ie. +ve to the left and -ve to the right, I can change it in software but is there some deep reason why it's backwards in the first place?
Had a bit of a play with the 35mm lens today, very nice. It's even got a DOF scale, heaven!:).
Will have a play with the zoom tomorrow, wading through the manual at the moment all 420 pages of it.
Here's a couple of early shots with the 35mm. Both are full size crops.

f9,1/320, ISO 200

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/07/435.jpg

I really got the 35mm for inside work but had a play outdoors just for fun. Took a couple of low light inside shots last night, the WB is much better than the D70 and it works much better at higher ISO's.

Look out Arthur, once I get these NEF's worked out I'll give you a run for your money!!!:D:D

DeanoH
23rd July 2010, 10:29 PM
Thanks Arthur, downloaded NX2.2.4 for 60 day trial and I thought PhotoShop was non intuitive and hard to use, 'crikey'. Played with this for an hour or so and I've still still no idea how it works.
Reminds me of the time many years ago of watching American sailors play craps at Wrest Point casino, watched for several hours and still couldn't pick up the game, I assume craps has rules but damned if I could pick them up.
I'll have to find a tutorial somewhere and see if that helps.
Absolutely miserable weather and light to match down here so used that as a challenge.

24th July 2010, 07:40 AM
Hi Deano,
Try to use the NX2 at the begining with this workflow:
Open the nef image:
Adjust level if needed.
Adjust exposure
Use the noise removal tool in combitanion to the USM.
Look the white balance if it is OK
Haver a look the color tones if you are happy with them (saturated?)
Save the image as tif
Open the image in PS and do the rest of your work flow

The important part is opening the nef on Capture and do the basic adjustments to not loose the camera inputs, then it is ok to use PS or other program.

Regarding the images I can see that you have though condition and the sky is blowed out.

Cheers

Your shot is a hard one to get as your focus is both on the subject (you) and the sunset. You need to determine what is priority here... if its the sunset then you can have yourself as a silhouette with the sunset being the start attraction. If its on you then the flash becomes an issue with trying to get the right exposure. Personally I hate flash and prefer to have other artificial light... obviously you cant where your at! :D

Your doing the right thing tho, like me, I always experiment, take many shots etc etc to learn the camera ad craft ;)

Keep at it and don't worry about not having a million dollar camera. The brain and understanding behind the camera is far more important in achieving good results. When the camera becomes the limitation in what you do then it is time to look for a better one. Untill then experiment and enjoy. Post more and share your progress with the rest of us.

There are some sections that can be improved with Nik viveza selecting the and adjusting contrast and bright.
The good with Viveza is that there is no need to work in many layers :)
IMO I will try in PS, layers, linear contrast (default settings) and then if you can just work in the rocks at the end of the log in the LHS

Hi Chucaro.

I'm on Sony so I don't get the benefit of capture NX.

But I've tried what you suggested, and it has made quite a difference. So much so that I manually masked all the rocks and bumped the contrast on them as well. And added a very slight vingette.

The difference is subtle, but makes a bit difference to my eyes.

Curves are great because they are not destructive.
Always work with the tiff file as "Smart Object" and save the original as smart object with all the layers open.
By having your original with the layers open you can adjust the image at later stage to suit the printer and paper selected without loosing valuable data.
I am not an expert in PS, my interest in in take the shot and not seat in the PC for hours, but it is nice to recuperate images that are not possible to replace.

I use as reference the book Photoshop CS3 for Nature Photographers, a work in a book by Ellen Anon and Tim Grey.
Tim is an excellent nature photographer and this book with a CD is excellent.

The edition for CS5 (http://au.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0470607343.html) is available with the inputs from George Lepp

I only use -1, 0, +1 in most cases. Ill need to experiment next time with different exposure settings.

If you shoot RAW you can easily swing the exposure my +/-1 without the need to HDR, so in that case you are likely to be getting the effect from the software more than creating an image that your sensor couldn't capture.

It may take a while, but I think that if you are aiming for a natural looking photo you can use adjustment brushes in ACR/lightroom to recover the same level of detail from a single image than you would from a -1,0,+1 HDR for a majority of scenes.

And for those scenes that you can't, you would really need a -2,0,+2 HDR anyway.

I have also found that adding the missing stops there to take a 5 exposure HDR doesn't seem to help. It certainly make manually burning through more complex than it needs to be.

Cheers, Steve

Chucaro

I agree with you Steve, I do not like HDR and prefer you use Point adjustments in Capture NX2 in the nef file of Nik Viveza in the Tiff.

Cap
23rd October 2010, 08:15 PM
HDR cannot be successfully done with one image. Theres just not enough information on one image as far as dynamic range is concerned. Under exposed areas will turn very noisy as lighting these up only artificially amplifies the litlle potons captured in the photosites. Thats why you need the over exposed ones, to ensure these are captured.

So I believe you still need at least 2 shots, a normal exposure and at least an over exposure.

I suppose I could mate. I have many more.

In the mean time, there are even more Afghanistan photos on the thread I have been contributing to here:

along with some other photos, covering the other places I have been working...
between Mozambique, Timor Leste, Ghana, Uganda, and now in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Is it a Series LR chassis? With coil helper springs?

Well spotted Ron, It's my 1951 80inch Series 1. I somehow don't think those shackel bushes will pass a saftey certificate :p

The helper coil springs are there because the previous owner used to cart a 700Ltr spray tank in the back around their farm. Poor suspension needed all the help it could get. You can tell it's a backyard job as one spring is welded in upside down compared to the other one :p

Ok Pop, tell me a story!!!

Looks like fuel explosion so I'm thinking napalm? or fuel depot?
(if fuel depot why park so close,so back to napalm or something similar- assuming set explosion hence photographic record- assuming in Aus as nice clear shot so too old for o/seas service with ambo (not white either!) but it is fantastic...do tell? does the number two indicate airfield ambulance? )

That's a poster shot for ambos I reckon!

No, it's steel. In the original I can see the vertical row of rivets (behind the pipe dropping down the side).

Digger,

I took the shot on OLR-067's (Paul M) camera at the Land & Air Spectactular in May this year. The show was at Emu Gully near Ipswich and is an annual event. Paul M was driving his ambo (thats why I had his camera) and was participating in a Vietnam era re-enactment along with the "Contact Front" guys, a Cent, an APC and a few others. A great weekend and looking forward to next year.

A challenge for those PS savy.
Kaye took this pic looking into Well 18 on the CSR earlier this year.
I'm trying to 'enhance' it as the cover pic for her journal of the trip (180 pages including pics).
What I am trying to achieve is a darker border and more detail in the faces without losing the colour of the sky/clouds. With a bit of sharpening, maybe, thrown in for good measure. Not much at all really!!
Have I set myself an impossible task ?

Not an easy task to do in a image with so little pixels but I will give it a go.
The image is very noisy so it will be hard to keep it sharp and without noise.

Having recently upgraded from PSE7 to CS5 I'm at the bottom of a long learning curve. Here's some attempts at reprocessing some pics taken on GCLRO's recent Fraser Is trip.

500D + (mostly) Sigma 10-20mm. Colour adjustments, lens compensation, overall and targeted exposure, (CS5) ND filter, sharpening and cropping.

Overcooked this one trying to lighten the shadows on the rocks.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/11/1519.jpg

I am happy with this one. Being able to use CS5's ND filter really helped. I've used the lens correction filter to straighten the image, taken with a Canon 18-200 kit lens @ 18mm.

I struggle with this type of shot - I was taking a shot of one of my boys doing a spinning kick to break timber. It is a high speed kick and I am rapid shooting with a 35mm Nikkor lens and in low light from 30 metres away (no tripod)....short of selling a kidney and getting a Nikor low fstop telephoto I guess I am not going to do too much better than this (and the kit 55-200 is ok for this but is does not go as low in fstop), especially with no tripod used? Again any tips appreciated. The specs were Matrix metering, F1.8, 1/200 SS, AF- dynamic 3D.

The horizons can be straightened in most post processing software but it is always better to shoot straight. A good trick is to keep an eye on the marks in the view finder and to line up on these. Once you know you are level then position the horizon in the correct spot in the view finder that you want to structure the image.

For the kick, speed is important as you are trying to stop motion, a flash helps here but you are a reasonable distance away for the camera's built in flash and I assume it probably wouldn't be appreciated. Have a read up on ISO Sensitivity and the Auto ISO feature (I'm sure the D5000 has this). Look at using something in the ISO 800 to 3200 range. You should then be able to possible use the 200mm at f/5.6. If the image is to noisy (grainy) at ISO 3200 consider not going above ISO 1600.

Thanks mate. I appreciate the help. I had the ISO on auto with a max of 1600 selected so as to avoid grain. It chose 360 speed so perhaps it didnt appreciate when focused the speed. I might pre-select it next time at 3200 and see how that travels. The 5000 is still pretty good at that and very sharp still at 1600, so I can play a bit.

Thanks again.

dmdigital
19th December 2010, 06:39 PM
If you shoot in M (manual) with auto ISO and you can make it select the higher setting.

I use this for sports shots as the D3s is fine up to ISO 10000. I then select what shutter/aperture I want and let the camera change the light sensitivity.

If the D5000 isn't too noisy at ISO3200 a good noise removal software like Dfine will remove it.

The help is much appreciated matey. Will the Nikon Capture NX2 do the trick in terms of the editing side to reduce noise (not that the camera is noisy - pretty impressive on that score) - I have that software, but admit to being pretty lousy at using it (need to read the tutorials).

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Tried for months to get some sense out of NX2 but gave up in the end. Must be the most non-intuitive software ever invented, makes PhotoShop look easy. I cannot believe that software like this can be released comercially.

It actually is very good once you learn a bit about it. NX was a lot more clunky than NX2. The U-point system is actually very very good and NIK Software have this through their entire software suite. The need for NX2 to handle NEF files though is less of an issue as ACR 6.x is very good at processing them now unlike previous versions.

Two from Boxing Day. A friend's radio controlled buggy. Temperamental little thing, didn't last too long so didn't get many shots off before it was pack up and back to the workbench.

There's not enough photos in this photo thread !

Here's a couple I took this afternoon.

It was windy and overcast so it was a bit difficult even to get the feller in frame let alone sharp...

Finally a break in the weather today so I escaped to Cedar Creek Falls early this morning. Apart from 2 other photographers I had the place to myself.

I see the Nanny state police have been at it; fencing off access to the falls proper to stop the idiots (I suppose). Not idiot proof though as I managed to drag myself here and there for some close up shots.

All done with the Sigma 10-20mm f3.5.

Nice shots Mark. If you shot in RAW I think the fourth one would make a great single image HDR (assuming you didn't bracket a set of 3-5).

I did take a "set" for each image but I've been too lazy to learn HDR in CS5 as yet.

Mark, have a look a Nik Software's HDR Efex Pro plug in for CS5/LR3/Aperture. I've bought it after trialing it for a few days. Excellent product and I find it easier to use than Photomatix or CS5 HDR for what I want.

I use firefox.
just right click > copy image location.

then you just need to put
your copied flickr url

if your using IE you would have to go to properties then copy the url from there.

Or you can drag the image to a new tab then copy the url from the address bar..

Or there is quickr pickr (http://quickrpickr.com/)

These were taken at the Red Cliffs, Scarborough QLD
