Park at the junction betwee the fire trail and Warumbul Drive. It is a 20 minute walk - and not a very interesting one. There are a couple of vague junctions with side tracks. Stay on the main fire trail and bear left where it isn't obvious which way that is.

Taken at Birdsville a couple of weeks ago is this little critter. Body about the size of a small rabbit. Basically round in shape with a long skinny tail. Sits up on its haunches a bit like a Quoka. Quite timid.
No idea what it is, anyone out there know?

Thanks Arthur it certainly looks a bit like a Quokka but it would have to be on holiday as it's several thousand Km's out of the Quokkas distribution area.

wow deano was looking at one of those 80-400mm lenses last night.
my other half and I really want a bigger lens (curently have a 18-200mm) as we do allot of photography of birds and wildlife. here's a few pics of some humpbacks we saw on the weekend about 50k's south of kalbarri WA on the weekend.
would of been nice to have that extra range.
none of these are cropped

G'day Benz, this lens is certainly good for wildlife photography, especially hand held bird photography. Though there are a couple of things to note. At the upper and lower end of its range the focus is a bit soft. I find that it is best from about 130mm to 360mm. Also not having 'on the fly' manual overide of focus can be a nuisance when trying to focus behind a foreground object, such as a bird in a tree for example, and the lens is reasonably heavy to lug around, a chest carry pouch is a good idea when in the bush. Apart from these minor gripes it is a terrific lens. The VR is exactly what its cracked up to be and the lens is quite robust.
Heres a few more samples.

1/500, f9, 360mm, auto-focus ON.
Auto-focus was used for all these shots. The last photo shows how 'spot' focus allows focusing on a background subject.
All these shots were taken with a hand held Nikon D300. Having a lot of pixels certainly helps when it comes to cropping the shots later. The hardest thing I need to remember is not to push the lens at its upper end but to rely on PP to get a better result.
If I was able to wrap my head around PhotoShop or Nikons Capture NX the results could be even better.
I can recommend this lens for general purpose birding/nature photography at a cost that doesn't break the bank, (just bends it a bit).

The wooden fence is a serious steel construction to protect the wall I was standing on from errant ferries. Moving it out of the way for the shot was not an option :-)
All I could do was move as far left as possible and raise the camera up as much as the tripod would allow.

Anyone know what brand of spider this little fella is? His legs would span a 50c coin. He's upside down at the moment, and dispite several requests would not turn over...
He's quite a busy little guy, on quite a few mornings I've watched him wrap flys up whilst having my morning coffee.
Photo was taken with my 17-50 Sigma f2.8, (I really want a macro lense now :( ).
Cheers,
Tim

Thought about de-caf ? - Sure the spider will thank you for it !!
- Try a low-power magnifying glass taped to the front of your lens, to get get close(er) focus.
A "Macro" lens must give an image on the film plane, - sorry, 'sensor' - that is no less than 1:1, at its closest focus.
. Its a big ask for lens design, and is priced accordingly, so don't pay too much for a modern day "macro" which may be more of a 'close-focus' lens.

Here's a quick pic of a slow spider taken with my Happy-Snapper CANON A430 .
- 4 meg and 4x zoom. (Seven+ years old)
I've used a very expensive Macro lens attachment, which just goes to show what you can do with a bit of ungenuity. :p
Pic of Boris is full-frame and shot from a few inches away. NO tonal manipulation, sharpening or any other fiddling

I finally got around to making a collage of some pics I took in Vancouver a couple of years ago. I have previously posted three of them but I looked at these a few days ago and thought "I can make a story here".
I was looking out of my 7th floor hotel window down into the alleyway/car park beside the hotel and saw this street walker approaching. She spied a mark and went over to him. You can guess the rest.

Hi Ron,
well this is very common for people to think that Lebanon is similar to other countries in the region.
Those pictures were taken few days ago.
The country has been under a strong storm for the last 4 days, the expected temperatures for tomorrow night are 1degree Celsius at sea level, snow will be falling starting 500m of altitude.
Great pictures ans off-roading in prospect :D

Interesting Tim, which kind of controller and machine brand is.
I used to maintain Mazaks with Fanuc controllers and Index with Simens among others.
I loved the job and closed the business when my back give up.

Hi Arthur south of Hobart
My problem was L5 was ruptured badly, it then took two very long years for my back to settle down again and now am off the anti-inflammatory's, Panadol Osteo and the anti-depressants, though I still have to be very careful with myself when working not to aggravate it again.
A young chap just down the road from me has set up a workshop with some of the older style machines in a old milking shed, I had him do a skim on the back of the 300 TDi water pump housing / axillary bracket where there was some corrosion around the hole where the 'P' gasket sits.
Cheers Arthur north of Hobart

A day at the office, sorry about quality, taken on a throw away Sony phone at 500m away on rapid. The white dot in the background of the top photo is actually a 130 beside a dumptruck. This was a small shot of about 130 holes and about 9 tonne of product. Very rare to have a blow out like that, would have been the result of poor ground infront of one front hole. That is why it is just dust.

Hi Chucaro, the machines are Intermac and the controller is CNI, both brands are part of the Biesse Group, (whom I work for). The controller is a windows based control, the whole PLC is just a PCI card that fits into a computer. We used to use Osai controllers, which would be similar to the Fanuc controllers. Sorry to hear you had to give up the work.

I was invited to a Land Rover sponsored 4WD day on Friday, and they were kind enough to bring an Evoque along for us to try in the "rough stuff". I must say it was surprisingly capable, even if it did feel weird being so close to the ground!

I had the chance to visit the showroom of the local agent a couple of days ago.
Well I wasn't impressed by the new Range Rover Vogue, it doesn't impose itself, it looks as if it is a revamped LR2 or Freelander.
I must confess that it looks beautiful.

Playing around with a "new" second-hand Pentax-M Macro 1:4 100mm lens I bought yesterday from Disco_Owner (thanks Khos).
One of these: SMC Pentax-M 100mm F4 Macro Reviews - M Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database (http://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/SMC-Pentax-M-100mm-F4-Macro-Lens.html)
It's a manual lens so I have to remember how to do exposure (and focus!) settings. These have not been post-processed, they are straight from the camera. Exposure was a guess.

May I ask how long this jetty is, as it looks to be a long one.
I was over at Port Germein (SA) last weekend and the jetty there is about 1 mile (1600 metres) and it is claimed be the longest in the Australia and possibly the Southern Hemisphere?
Cheers, Mick.

Those old lenses work very nicely, Khos. That's one advantage of the Pentax — backwards compatibility with all the old lenses, manual, auto, non-AF, etc.
The 50mm 1.4 shown on your pic of the camera (previous page) — is that the one from your LX1?

Yes , that's correct Ron , that is the one I was trying to sell , glad I kept that lens :) Regards to backward compatibility of pentax and their old lenses , I only discovered that the camera will not meter the light from Subject if you have a Pentax-M lens on , once you have composed the shot and set your aperture acordingly in the Manual mode then by pressing the DOF preview Button or the Green button the amount of light is then measured by camera light metre and then Camera automatically selects an exposure setting. this is Brilliant !!!! :D Kudos to Pentax for their Awesome backward compatibility.
