A cool Monday almost in winter usually does it. :p
In saying that, only the beach was deserted. A bus load of kids and quite a few people were at the car park.

Here is a scan of an image I took years ago.
It was taken using a Nikon F1 and a 50mm macro lens in an Ikelite housing. The film used was Fuji Velvia 50 Pro,and was processed by myself.
This image was used on the cover of a scuba diving magazine, which really pleased me:p

Thanks for the complement guys , much appreciated .
@ bytemark , as Ron mentioned , I use a Pentax K5 with a DBG-4 Grip. I'm not sure if you can view the images on my photostream but the exif data pretty much shows all of metadata of the camera raw image , type of camera ,exposure , focal length , etc.
The actual lens that I used most for nearly all my landscape shots is the Pentax Da15 Ltd.
For both of those shots I used a B+W 110 3.0 1000 ND Filter.
Nice Macro shots :)

I'm afraid that being on the end of frequent Pentax-bashing from Nikon and Canon owners is like being on the end of frequent Land Rover-bashing by Toyota/Nissan owners - very, very tiring.
I'm happy with my Pentax K-7. I can use all my lenses dating back to my first AF Pentax K-mount lenses from 1989 and even my M42-mount lenses from my first SLR bought in 1968, a Pentax Spotmatic (albeit, those in semi-manual mode).

Canon users get it from Nikon, Nikon from Canon, Pentax and Sony from everyone! :p It's all just banter, Ron.

Ron, I am a Nikon user because it is what I like but IMO the important part is the one that press the trigger and then the equipment.
Pentax is a fine machine and the company produce very good optics, more that enough to have an excellent result.
There is no Canon, Pentax, Sony, etc bashing in me ;)
Keep shooting.

Cockatoo Island taken last year. Minesite on the right of the island. The island in the background that you can also see mining activity on is Koolan Island.
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/5806/91wn.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/33/91wn.jpg/)
Looking down into the mine itself, with crushing plant, ore shed and shiploader at the far end of the pit. The pit is below the ocean - the "sea wall" keeps the water out (well, most of the time it does :o). Koolan Island minesite can be seen in the top left corner of the photo.
At the end of last year, we knocked down the ore shed and old crushing plant. We are now extending the "sea wall" to surround this area and will then extend the pit into this area. We have taken a new "mobile" crushing plant up to the island and this is now installed on the waste dump at the other end of the pit. It's all on tracks and can be "walked" to wherever we need to set it up.

Whales frolicking just off the mine workings. The tree huggers try to tell everyone that we are "disturbing their habitat" and driving them away from their natural breeding grounds. They've been hanging around every year since well before mining activities began up there and no doubt will still be there long after we've all moved on.

Teaching myself how to do star trails. Looking south, 134 x 30 second exposures at 10mm, ISO400, F3.5. Biggest issue was focusing. Had to take umpteen shots then zooming in on playback and fiddle with the focus.
I think the planes make an interesting contrast to the stars. The gaps in the plane trails were caused by my laptop doing weird things.

To reduce noise in the photo. One of the ways to take long exposure star trail photos is to take 100's of quick shots on the same setting, focal length and view. And then stack them together into one photo.
By doing it this way you can also get the foreground and camp fires into the same shot with out over exposing it. Keeping all the detail in the photo

I just looked at both copies in Lightroom side by side...its not that soft on screen well it appears that way to me anyway (although I'm not the best judge because everything to me is soft due to my now shocking eye sight:()
but what I did notice on the 1:1 close up is there is an introduction of noise so perhaps this is what it adding to the soft look once its sent out to a Jpeg and compressed to fit in photobucket.
This is only the second time i have played with LR5 I wouldn't typically go to this extreme, its just that I watched some tutorials on Adobe and was shocked about how much I didn't know about LR so thought I would have a play and familiarise myself with its functions
There is a lot more to LR than I thought and it is quite a powerful tool, obviously not as powerful as Photoshop but still pretty bloody good:)

Thankyou Ausfree...It's a shot I'm pleased with. I only had a moment to take it and it is one of a series of 5 taken.
It was taken with a Canon 7D with the Canon 70-300mm EF f/4-5.6L IS USM lens. That lens is pretty much welded to this body.:D
The camera was on one of the custom settings set with aperture priority at f/8 and auto ISO. The resulting shutter speed was 1/500 sec and ISO 800. The focal length was 300 mm at a distance of about 8 m. The raw file was processed with DxO Optics Pro V9 a little bit of local contrast applied, de-noised and output sharpened and cropped from 3:2 to 5:4 for the reduced resolution image shown here.
The thing that worked was the reflected sunlight off the sandstone paving out of shot to the lower right illuminating the birds underside...without that it would have been a dull shot. Also there is just enough depth of field from the aperture setting to make the bird stand out from the background without turning that background into mush.

view the image info and copy the address for the picture location....
when you come in here to post a reply click the little yellow box with the mountain shape in it it brings up a little pop up window with "http" in it delete that as usually when you copy the location you have already copied that part.
Paste your location link in that box and hit OK the picture should then appear in your post before you hit submit....
I use firefox so if your using a different browser when you click on the picture try copying the link in the browser address bar or right clicking on the picture and maybe going to properties and see if there is one.

Nice camera isn't it :D I still use the D3s for a lot of bird in flight shots due to it's faster frame rate than the D800e. What lenses are you using? It really shows up poor lenses for what they are.

I keep thinking about getting a 35mm or 50mm lens

I love it (the D7100). The only thing I'm not looking forward to is learning all the controls. After over two years with the LX5 I'm quite happy with how it works but the controls on the Nikon are a bit daunting.
The lens I've got is in the link below. Cost was $279 from camera house, which was very competitive locally.
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8G DX review: Digital Photography Review (http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/nikon_35_1p8g_n15)
The LX5 has an F2 lens (at its lowest zoom) so was great in low light and indoors without flash. When I was looking at DSLR's I wanted a good prime lens that would let me do the same (I can always borrow one of my dads many lenses in the mean time for anything else). I love the depth of field the F1.8 gives me too, its just not something you can play with much on cheapy point and shoots.
I read up a bit about the 35mm vs 50mm first and from all accounts the 50mm lens on the APS-C sensor had too much zoom for general use. Using my 35mm for the evening I'm happy so far. I don't think I'd be able to use the 50mm in my house without facing a lot of difficulty trying to frame shots, I just wouldn't be able to get back far enough.
Some reviews I read were concerned about buying a dedicated DX lens but too but to be honest I cant ever see myself dropping $3k+ on a FX body so not an issue for me.

Pinched my dads tripod and went and took some photos at Kings Park this evening.
Both photos are uploaded via lightroom after a bit of development. I dont like how the buildings are not very sharp in the second photo while the freeway is (it has loads of light though). I want to work on that so the whole image is equally sharp. Not sure if its a focus issue, or lack of light to give the buildings detail but already learning heaps about night time photos.
I quite like the shot of the memorial, I just had to drop the exposure slightly in lightroom to get it looking how I wanted.

Today I've been playing around putting some of my photos to use. My wedding is next weekend and my Fiancée and I wanted to have our dog involved somehow but as dogs aren't allowed at the garden we are having the ceremony it was getting difficult. Instead we are using pictures of Lilly as our table numbers for the reception. All I've done is put some very basic numbers over the top of the photos in PS Elements and they'll be printed out and put in frames on each table. I've made a quick collage of the photos (just an excuse to use some more features of lightroom :D). I quite enjoy this sort of stuff, its very basic but very different to my normal work or hobby activities.

I had a little accident with my camera last May.
I was taking some pics of the moon through a Newtonian telescope when I moved the scope the wrong way. My heavy A900 dropped out to eyepiece, onto the concrete 4 foot below. Apart from physically cracking the case, it did some nasty stuff inside because the viewfinder display was extra bright and the camera kept metering for 1/8000th sec in dark rooms.
It took 4 months and a grand to get it fixed, only to find out that they couldn't fully fix the anti-shake. I needed it for the handbrake's 40th in Sept so I collected as is. It worked OK for a little while but then started crashing and not framing shots properly. I couldn't bare wasting more time and money on it so I saved up for a new SLT-A99.. which I got last week :)
Also if anyone is interested, don't not go to European Electronics (http://www.europeanelectronics.com.au/), they are completely useless.

So usually I have black Cockatoos fly over my house one ever 2/3 weeks usually 2 or 3
But this morning there was a huge noise I got out of bed looked out the front door and sighted a yellow Cockatoo on the fence I ran to get my camera which was still all setup for the macro I did the night before hoping it would stay on the fence. I went out with the camera as quietly as I could because the black cockies are quite shy birds around here...to find that I had 20+ black cockies in the front garden!!!! OMG fighting over the bird bath..one in my water trough, several in the bushes. a large number on the tree, a few slitting along the fence line and they were flying past my front door at no higher than 2 meters off the ground
the light was quite poor this morning and I had to shoot at 200 to get them (as I couldn't get close enough but I managed to snap some shots I'm so pleased this is a rare occasion (I'm pleased I just had my camera batteries charged because usually they are not)

We still are mate, we are in Victoria. Got here in December. Currently we have 12 month tourist/working visas but i'm putting through for my skilled migrant visa now so hopefully we will get permanent residency in the next few months. We cant really afford to leave, so it looks like we will be staying for the next 3-5 years, maybe longer.
It was always our plan to come here and start life again, the trip was just a way of getting here :D The UK has gone downhill since 2008 and we felt like we were going nowhere. As a geologist I can get paid 3x what I was in the UK doing the same thing (geotechnics, so I don't have to go to the mines), so it was a no brainer for us really.
We also really really like it here, except you're more like the Americans than the British :wasntme: :D

I watched this on TV today, seems they have established some sort of record for the most horses ploughing in one event.

Recently bought a Nikon D5300 and here are a couple of my wee daughter Airor.
I've done a little bit of tweaking in Aperture with them...still learning with RAW files, so forgive me for the faults in the top one.

21st on Saturday night. Great view but the reflections on the glass from the internal lighting make it hard to do any night photography.
