Hi , Has anyone had the alternater mounting bolts sheer off on a tdi.300. It happened to me recentley and at first thought the bearings seized but it was not the case. Either the top bolt or bottom bolt let go first then the other followed, can't see any reason why!:eek:. What a racket it made the alternater ended up on the road. Glad i was close to home!, anyone had this happen and should i think about beefing bolts up?.

Cheers Sumo.:D

No havnt had it happen to me but it is not uncommon on Diesels for things to rattle loose.

I would say that this is what has happend and then the bracket has worn through the bolts.

I have found plenty of loose nuts and bolts over my engine onver the years, the worst being an oil cooler line while going up a hill in the bush with nowhere to stop other than on top of a woopty do where I stopped, blocked off the track because of which which got up the nose of the ranger who had a copper with him.

These things happen but that is something else for us all to have a check of at the next service.

Thanks.:D

Not on a 300 Tdi but I know Chenz had his alternator bolts fail on a 200

must have been noisy! :)

sounds like fatigue and improper tensioning (too loose or too tight), as they are studs they could be buggers to get out

BTW, I believe there is a replacement a/c pulley/clutch bearing available through Karcraft (they wont be open today 'cause it's a public holiday there apparently)

it's good if there was no extra co-lateral damage
