yep...you got it.....
red to +ve......black to -ve or earth on the vehicle......
and make sure the antenna is also earthed as it should be.......
its very straight forward.......you can run it straight to the battery......
but use a fuse for safety.....this way....you can always use the radio....
irrespective if the key is in the ignition or not......

Sorry, I thought you were asking more... I.e. how to run it. Then I re-read it.

Guessing a Disco.
Don't use your cigarette lighter plug.
Are you able to run the red and black power wires through your firewall out to the battery ?
Let us know if you can. We'll then help with part 2. ;)

Run the red(+) and black(-) back to the battery, put a 5A fuse in line with the red wire. Run the wires through one of the rubber grommets on the firewall.

Is there any advantage/difference/preference in running the black wire to the battery -ve terminal, or running it to a grounding connection on the body/chassis?
(will be installing my new UHF if/when I ever get the Disco back!)
