View Full Version : New Land Rover needed!

Hi

I am currently in Turkey as part of a big overland trip ending in Australia next year where I will be staying and working for a while.

The plan was to ship my 300tdi commercial Disco out there from Dubai but, given the cost and complication it is now looking like it will be easier and cheaper to quickly drive back to the UK (from Iran) and reluctantly sell the land rover and buy a new one in Aus to carry on the rest of the trip (despite the countless hours spent on it).

I really want to stay with land rover and fancy a 110 probably another 300tdi. How much am I looking at for one in decent condition, preferably with a few mods already done (snorkel, suspension, winch)?

I will be over in January and looking to buy anywhere in the country.

If anyone is interested details of the trip are on www.excellentadventre.co.uk

Thanks,

Dave

Understand your position Dave, met a French couple who shipped a 110 from Dubai to Perth recently and swore that they would never do it again.
Regarding purchasing in Australia, you shouldn't have too much trouble picking up a suitably equipped 110.
Following is a description of a 1993 110 that just sold for $10500 through our club magazine. And on the other end of the scale there was also a very well equipped 2000 Defender 110 Xtreme with a host of extras including L/R Fuel tanks, water tanks, dual batteries, cross axle diff lock, H/D springs and shocks, drawer system, roof rack etc etc.- sold for $35000.

200TDi 1993 2.5 litre turbo-diesel. Ex-navy 2 door troop carrier, good condition.
150,000 km, gearbox/transfer box recently reconditioned, clutch & rear oil seal replaced.
ARB bull bar and tow bar, Warn winch, extra 40 litre fuel tank, Kaymar swing-way spare carrier, 60 litre water tank, snorkel, dual batteries with isolator, aluminium roof rack. Fitted out with single camping bed/bench and 40 litre Autofridge eutectic refrigerator (original seats all available). 6 road tyres (4 low mileage) on original rims, 4 off-road tyres (low mileage) on disco rims with a spare rim. Overhead rack and rear mount suit HF radio.

It just depends what your budget will accommodate but there are usually quite a few 110's available - possibly even a few more will appear on the market 'at the right price' with the current financial situation.

Roger

BTW have you met up with any of the Land Rover enthusiasts from the clubs in Turkey? I believe they are a very friendly bunch.

Thanks Roger,

I think my bedget is closer to the $10 to 15k mark rather than $35k!

The thought of getting the disco 'as clean as new' to get into Aus is definately a frightening one!

Not got in touch with Turkish Land rover club, the prop and front diff died a couple of days ago and we have been quoted nearly $4000 usd by land rover to sort ıt so we may be in 2wd for the rest of the trip!

Is the club magazine online? Could be usefull to start looking now. Can i subscribe?

Thanks a lot,

Dave

That doesn't sound too good. Make sure you remove the front drive shaft and axles if you're going to drive around in 2WD, otherwise you will chewing a bit of metal up in the front end.

The club does have a markets section but due to a recent change in webmaster all is not yet up to pace, shouldn't be long though.

A few areas to keep an eye on:
The Markets section of this forum where you'll get a much larger coverage and can place a 'wanted ad'
Complete Vehicles - Australian Land Rover Owners (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/complete-vehicles/)

The 'Members Market' section of the LROC (Sydney Branch) Inc.
Land Rover Owners Club of Australia (Sydney Branch) - Members Market (http://www.lroc.com.au/MembersMarket.html)

And a few Internet listings such as
www.carsales.com.au (http://www.carsales.com.au)
and
www.drive.com.au (http://www.drive.com.au)

Good luck and keep in touch.

A good starting point other than the Markets in here would be

Trading Post - Buying and Selling Goods Online Australia wide (http://www.tradingpost.com.au)
Used Cars - New Cars - Search New & Used Cars For Sale - carsales.com.au (http://www.carsales.com.au)

Is a David with a Disco worth anything? DiscoDavid doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

Cheers

Coming to the end of the first leg of the trip now so I am reviving the old thread.

I have been looking at the previously mentioned web sites and there are a few 110s about that meet my requirements, which is good!

Of the ones i have been looking at about the same number have air-con as don't. I would have thought it was pretty important in Aus (Being from Manchester i am a bit soft when it come to heat). Having not lived there so i am not sure myself, but should the lack of air-con be a deal breaker?

Also, anyone spotted any nice 110s on the market for the sub $15000 mark?

Cheers

dave

That is what i was thinking...
There are so few land rovers to choose from, what kind of price is after market AC.

It would be much easier to buy a Land Cruiser but i dont think i could bring myself to do it!

To add to the drama, will I get my Iranian visa before tomorrow or will I have to chalk Iran off my list and head back through Europe to the UK in time for christmas?

Does the "AC" in the older Fenders actually work anyway? :p

Yes it does. Post re-gas, mine blows out at 2 degC on half throttle.

Dave, you should be able to pick up a 300Tdi Defender quite easily. There are probably about 10 110 Wagons for sale at any given time (Australia wide). Expect to pay $12,000 to $18,000 for something in good order. Price depending on milage & accessories.

If you're travelling alone, a 110 ute can be had cheaper, and recently there have been a lot of 130 Dual Cabs around. If you're going to be working and travelling the 130 may be a better combination, and the AC won't be struggling to cool your cargo area.

Domestic airfares can be had relatively cheaply, so you can always fly (or bus) to pick up a vehicle in another state.

Congratulations Lardy. I've been a licenced Aussie for 20 plus years now but I'm still a Pom in the locals eyes!
When I came here first (1972)the description "new Australians" was virtually reserved for the wogs but I suppose that wouldn't be considered politically correct these days.:o
Dave, when are you due to be in Oz? I've got a Defender I may sell but haven't completely made my mind up yet (or should I say the Cook, my dear wife that is, hasn't made it up for me!) and if you're here (Perth) at the right time you may like to have a look at it.
Happy travels.
Alan.

Cheers for the positive feedback on the diaries, it is nice to know people are reading them!

Currently in Munich (having the first beer and night out in nearly three months) on the way back to the uk. The disco is leaking oil at an impressive rate (1/2 l per driving day) but we are nearly home so it is easier to just keep topping it up (and if we get lost we can just follow the trail to find the road again)!

I will be in Aus at the start of february and plan to spend a couple of months driving about before parking up somewhere and once again becoming a tax paying member of society... Not sure of a route yet but the offer of a cold beer on route would be greatfully accepted!

ATH, if the decision is made for you to sell your 110, let me know, i will definately try to have a look!

Lardy, i think your are right about escaping the cold, a couple of nights ago it was -4.7 deg inside the car whilst we were sleeping! I had to sleep in a ski mask to stop my face (the only bit not under several layors of clothes, sleeping bag and blanket) freezing! The less-than-air-tight door seal also gave us the treat of waking up to find a substantial snow drift in one footwell!
