View Full Version : Well... My Story, My Replacement. Introducing my Landy

Gday
Well Im not sure where to start I wasnt sure whether to put this in the Rant section, or the Buildup section or the Introduction. So I put it in General Chat :)
My story for this year has been an interesting one very up and down.
To shorten it, it started out well. I play rugby and was up to peak fitness all set for the season. I got my licence first go. And dad leant me his Defender while he went New Zealand for three months. Which I ended up buying off him.
Then nasty things started happening. I had a reocurring back injury, so i went to the specialist and found out I had a bulged disc in my back. No more rugby this season. Wouldve been my 7th year playing and 5th year playing for Tasmania.
So time went on. I bought dads Defender.
Then while working on a large sheep property down the midlands I was putting the bucket on the front end loader of a 90 HP tractor. Its a long story but it landed on my toes, breaking the big toe, dislocating the second, and snapping the tip off the fourth. I was in hospital for 3 days with risk of infection. And came out with 3 pins in my toes. For 6 weeks.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/06/155.jpg
This is what dropped on my toes. I think about 250-300 KG
I was only talking to my physio the other day. (Shes trying to get some movement back in them for me, and requested a letter from the doctor who put them back together). Anyway the letter read at the end that I was about this far > < from having them amputated. :(
So got them all fixed and I can walk again.
Then the rear main seal went in the Defender. Had it fixed and was told Im up for a rebuild. So I took it down to Justin Cooper. Who told me the head was cracked, something solid had gone through the turbo, the crank was seriously flogged out and I was up for a new radiator. We had only had the car for probably 5000 ks so Im pretty sure the previous owner forgot to mention the minor mechanical faults :censored:
After lots of money I picked it up a week later. (Turned out cheaper to put a new motor in). Drove it home, loving every minute of it.
The next day I rolled it and wrote it off :( was an accident. (My dad told me even an experienced driver wouldnt have been able to save it). He looked at the skid marks. Noone was injured.

Luckily it was insured and the company paid out. I ended up buying it back off them.
It may not look bad but almost every panel from the doors back has a crease or dent.
It tore me apart. It was still drivable but luckily it landed on the steering arm so had a bit of a toe in. I broke down when dad arrived to offer assistance. First time I cried in probably 5 years. My car was my identity really all my mates knew me as the bloke with the Defender. And many a day I spent in, under or on top of it working away making it just that little bit better.
That was almost a month ago.
It took me bout 5 days before I even smiled again. And I actually lost sleep over it. And still do. It replays through my mind.
So after 3 weeks of thinking I made a decision. Well mum did. She was sick of seeing me depressed. I went down today and picked up my new Landy.
Its the same as my old one. Just a year younger. A different colour and has 200000 less Ks.

This thread will be my bulid up. Showing you all the improvements I intend to carry out. Hopefully this Defender will last me for many years to come.
My plans are:
Switch over the BF Goodrich M/T if they are ok
Switch over the Air Compressor and Rear Locker and the rear Maxi Drives
Switch over the TJM Bullbar and Sidesteps
Have a new alloy roofrack made up
Full alloy checker plate kit
Tweak the fuel pump
Maybe suspension upgrade
Hopefully be finished by the end of next year. Ill be working all holidays non stop.
So thats my story
Thanks for reading
I had to get it off my chest

Just a bit more to add to the Saga...:(
When Jocks original 110 turned up, we pulled the engine to inspect and quote etc and found a cracked/ previously repaired head(Coolant had corroded an injector solidly into the head, and was welling up and down the side of the head:o), a crankshaft with very little left of the thrust washers, end float so bad that when the clutch was depressed, the timing belt alignment would've changed:o, a knackered radiator, a turbo inlet turbine that looked as if someone had thrown a rock at it while spinning at max revs, etc etc etc.
Enter a Donor 110. Also a hardtop, the SAME age, the SAME colour, with 150K on the clock. This vehicle I knew very well,(I had serviced it since infancy) was rolled on its side some 3 weeks previously while on holiday in Cairns, so we bought the wreck and shipped it back down here.
Jock ended up with the engine assembly (complete), the bull bar, side steps, winch, and sundry other Items which was all fitted up and he was on his way. Driving like a 300Tdi SHOULD go, and no more drivetrain clunks thanks to some Trailing arm bushes and A frame ball joint etc.
About a week later, I get the phone call telling of the incident, and was stunned. Both blue, 110 hardtops, similar age, both rolled, one on the left, one on the right. You couldn't read about it!
I'm glad that no one was injured, and as Jock says he seems to be 'lucky in his misfortunes', if you understand what I mean.
The new one is a beauty, 70,000km, very well cared for and has a great life ahead of it!
Go the 110!

I would have cried too. The bad luck's all behind you now though and you have a truly beautiful 110 there that would make many of us envious. 70000km! It must be the lowest mileage Tdi in existence. Enjoy it. And go easy on the chequerplate.

Im not sure. I wish I could. But Im very strapped for cash at the moment. Was hoping to think about it some more. But Justin told me last night he has a buyer for my 300 Tdi. So unfortunatley I think it will be wrecked :(

Im currently insuring the new Defender.
I was just interested to know. Who are you insured with?
One insurance company wasnt real keen on accessories, another wouldnt insure because of my prior accident.
Whos the best bet?
When it comes to accessories etc etc?
Thanks

Are you in a 4wd club?
TCIS insurance brokers if you are.
They insured my Disco for $4000 more than NRMA did with agreed value plus the premium is less.
The reduction in premium more than covers the club cost each year although I was already in a club anyway.

You have certainly been in the wars since we met, glad to hear you are O/K after the crash.
Sad to see the blue Deefer end up like that, your new one looks like a goer though.
I have been a bit slack replying to your PM, I will give you a call in the next couple of days, I might be able to buy some parts off you if you are wrecking the old girl, they could live on in Mongrel :burnrubber:.
Keep your chin up, that should be your run of bad luck finished (3 things).
Cheers Andy. :)

Dont worry mate I am now the proud owner of a set of steel caps :)
Not sure if the would have helped though. As it was the join on the side of the bucket that landed across my toes. I now have an imprint in the leather of my boots :o

Guessimate weight of close to 3 tons.
Was a bit slow up the hills, but had just enough power to sit on 80.
Amazing fuel economy. I used about 25 - 30 litres, to tow that amount 225 Ks. Works out around 12-14 L/100KM?
Used more fuel on the way home :o

I wrote off my Defender (it was insured and re-built) - would have just been a mere prang if the firewall hadn't been creased. I had no idea it was a write off - I drove it off the beach and home. I got the call and I was gutted and to this day I dwell on it from time to time. I remember asking a co-worker for a ciggie, I rarely smoke, and went for a walk in the park to keep it togetyher. (See my gallery for all the gory details - warning some viewers may find the images disturbing). Frank Sinatra sings
"Regrets, I've had a few, but then again too few too mention" well he never wrote off a Defender.
Anyway my insurance comapany paid me out (no claims in 14 years) and told me never to darken their doorstep again. i went to Shannons and got a package deal with my motorbike and all seems well but of course you never know until the worst happens.
No complaints about my last lot (brokers called Famous Car Company here in Perth) but alas after the prang it was not mutual.
Good luck for the future. When stuff like that happens you sort out the problem, either get it fixed or get a new one, and then you can move on.
I know a guy who pranged his F100, low milage, original and given to him by a family friend. It's not too bad he palns to fix it up but it's there in the shed looking at him and he can't stand it.
It would be great to have a parts vehicle to raid from time to time but Ii wonder if you should just flog it to Justin to get it out of your life even if Justin ends up selling bits back to you later on.
cheers

My son rolled our RRC after a front tyre blowout and took a couple of chips of bone out of his spine. We believe that he was not killed only due to our prayers for him. Perhaps defenders stay more intact after roll overs than the range rover does. I think you need to stop rolling them, as next time things may be worst, John.

Its like that isnt it. I got straight out and sat on the road just staring. Its like there a dunno what the word is. They grow on you and you get attached. The driveline clunk is an example. Only you know how to control it so it doesnt clunk. Just the right amount of revs and timing of the clutch.
When I broke my toe, my brother had to drive the Defender home, drove me nuts. BANG goes the driveline every time he changed gear :(
I tried to insure with Shannons, the lady said she wouldnt insure me because of my age and history. So Im with Just Cars now. Trying to negotiate a market value is a bit tricky.
Like you said I dwell on it now and again but less and less now I have the new project. I think Ill hang on to it. Just see how things go

Bit more to the story.
Sent the Defender down to Hobart a fortnight ago :BigCry:
But picked it up today :D
When I towed the other Landy down, my good one was struggling for 80 on the flats. On the way up though. Whoooeee  :firedevil: (apart from the headwind) my little dear was wanting to sit on 90.
JC played with the fuel pump and timing, put the rear locker in, fitted the new old barwork, serviced vehicle, tightened all suspension etc, replaced front springs, fitted radiator and alternator and flushed cooling system
Now it goes like an absolute train, no clunk at all. And although I havent yet driven it without the trailer on it has tons of power. With an empty car trailer (700 odd kg) still pulls bloody easily.
Things are starting to look up now :D
Thanks for looking
And many thanks to JC and great bloke and mechanic :twobeers:
Now have to go and work to pay it all off :( :) :Thump:

We just bought one 51k still has OK sticker on transfer case, never been "onroad" 10yrs of going across one paddock homestead to cattleyard. He was that fastidius about it he had the timing belt changed at 40k just to be sure and while he was at it new clutch wheel bearings h/d steeing box new brakes suspension bushes etc, just to be sure. The thing is seriously in better condition i think then when it was new. All for the princley sum of $16k. He said goodby to it by giving us a full tank of fuel and a box containing 6 oil filters, 4 fuel filters, 4 air filters, 2 of each drive belt and oil for a full change of everything. To say we are stoked with it is an understatment, it's my wifes and she loves it so much she won't even let me drive it, makes me realise what my Disco went like 300k ago.
Sorry to bring that up in your thread but i'm just so excited.

Like nothing else on this earth :firedevil: Reckon I could get a Bugatti Veyron off the lights :wasntme: :D
When I got the other one off the trailer and was just towing the trailer it was comparable to my old one, after you had played with it :p But with out the trailer its just awesome :D
Fuel bill on the other hand. Lets just say its lucky the price of diesel is going down :(
Ahh the snorkel ;) well I had a quick search through the forum and it doesnt sound like a short job. So I have to get a day off work, or maybe this weekend :) Was just thinking will that seal that is on the snorkel seal well enough? Or should I help it along with something?
Thanks JC

Hey,
Glad it's going well.:) Fuel bill can be reduced, you can adjust it back a little if you like. Give me a call and I'll talk you through it. (I can't post up in general chat the secrets of Tdi performance tuning...:D:p)
Snorkel job is about an hours work, even for someone who hasn't done it before. That seal is fine, you'll find removing it and making a template from the other car is going to take almost as long as the fitting to the other one. It's quite easy. Maybe check the safari website and see if some instructions can be downloaded? Or just take careful note how the other one comes off is probably just as good:)
And above all, don't be a sooky la la with the step drill, aluminium panels have no feelings:twisted: :wasntme:

Jock you have had the luck of the pox doctor. My sympathies mate. It has to get better from now on. I have a Disco 200Tdi and I know I'd be absolutely devastated if I lost her. Having spent an arm and a leg getting her just right you must be gutted !
My sympathies, there is only one way to go from here mate, onwards and upwards !
You have a great buy on the white deefer. Enjoy. I have a soft spot for Jocks, I married one 33 years ago and lived in Jockland for a few years. She is still trying to live it down marrying a sassenach !
It has to get better from now on mate, good luck. Remember the glass is always half full.
All the best

I do like the alloys, but won't it damage the sidewall seeing as it's rubbing fairly hard?

Depends HOW hard I guess, but mine does it and has done for the last set of tyres too. It IS worse with the 255/85's than the 235's, and having the detroit means it just keeps on driving anyway:eek:. I haven't noticed any lasting damage though.
Yet.

Very nice suspension set up and love the black al/cheq plate on the bonnet!
What springs+shocks combo are you running and what height did your defender end up at?(am hoping to still fit in the garage) I have a 02defender with std suspension and a set off 255/85r16 the same as yours but am looking to do my suspension soon as it's sagging at the front from the b/bar weight.

I'm running Dobison coils with Boss Adjustable shocks. Which are rubbish and will soon be replaced with a new set of Bilsteins
It also has a set of dislocation cones in the rear and 3" extended front brake lines
Over all it has about a 45mm lift from standard

Trying to sound proof it a bit, it's a bit noisy with the 3 inch exhaust.
I made up a head liner for the back and fitted sound insulation between it and the roof
