Oversize bagagge is no worries - you just get charged for it.
Obviously you need to pack them in a tube of some description and make sure they can take a substantial weight being dropped on them, but as long as you do that well enough then it shouldn't be a problem.

stormwater pipe?
glue the ends on.
Except one end which you use a screw on cap , other words you wont get your rod out of it:p

You can buy proper fishing rod holders from most fishing shops - I bought one last year - about $45 from Amazon in Wetherill Park
No problems with the plane as already mentioned.

what he said, just make the tube long enough to be able to saw a bit off, and throw the extra cap in your luggage for the return trip
now the saw and the glue you may have to pre organise to be available at the destination.
or cut the rods in half!!!!!!!

glued on at one end and screwed on at the other, i can drill a hole in the side and the cap and use a padlock to secure, that way no saw and glue needed! unless i loose the key:D
thanks fellas!

?I don't get teh glue on both ends bit... have you guys REALLY heard first hand of stuff getting nicked during a flight or by baggage handlers?
I fly regularly, as in 2-3 times monthly internationally and never use locks (only Aussie tourists do in my experience). Never had anything touched, never heard of anyone else having anything touched and I live and work with literally 1000's of friends, colleagues and acquaintances doing the same thing - word would get around damn quick if it did happen!

At low-rent end, 150mm water pipe, some foam and some gaffer tape.
Last time I splurged and bought the blue glue and ends and screw cap. I wrapped all the rods in something soft so they didn't bang together.
Or, individual lengths of thinner tube.
I'd offer you mine, but it's only 1.5m or something close - 2-piece fly rods.
Cheers

so why cant i lock my rod tube?? ide rather spend 5 bucks on a lock than have the possibility of 300 dollars plus of rod possibly going missing?
sounds like cheap insurance to me...
thanks for the offer simon.

I have flown with rod tubes with screw caps one end. One came with my fly rod and is about 40mm and I have a storm water pipe 90mm for a few other rods. I have never had a problem with any tampering.
Locks if you want to.
If you fly to the states unless the lock is TSA approved (they can open it) they will just use the bolt cutters.
