I can't help with a solution to the problem but my "94 did the same thing last year after going bush. The next day it was fine and has been ever since. Hopefully yours will do the same.
Steve.

Just to clarify

It will drive in 1st to 4th gears .....

BUT no drive when selecting 5th or Reverse??

Seeing as 5th & reverse are on the same selector gate, I would say that might point to your problem.

He lost 4th and reverse, so it might be a different issue, but his was a cheap fix.

Better than my last effort. Took 2 trips and a month to get it home to start repairs.

I would be checking that its definately moving the relevent selector rod (pull the lever out and attempt to move said rod with a big screwdriver so you can see whats going on...

Im going to assume that it is as its rare as buggery for the rod cups to fail on the R380 that was more an lt77 deal BUT if hes a heavy handed shifter the pin holding the shift fork onto the selector rod may have let go.

good news to follow.

ok the good news..

if you seperate off the tcase with the gearbox well supported you can work the gearbox extention off without having to drop the gearbox.

if your lucky and have all the right tools and extra joints in your arms you should be able to replace the pin in situ...

Its not easy but it is achievable.

If you go that route be extra careful when re assembling as the seals on the extention and the tcase are easy to damage.

Clutch? Transfer case in neutral? Splines worn out on the transfer case input gear?

what gears do you have ?

are the gears selecting OK, ie are they is the right place and feel right ?

remove the top housing and check the grub screw is tight that holds the yolk to the selector rail, this can cause you to loose 5th and rev as the yolk is not moved over far enough to get the gate,

slide under and eyeball the tcase linkages if they move correctly pull the PTO plate and then with the back of the vehicle up on stands and the handbrake on hard (operators foot on the pedal too) eyeball the motion inside the top of the tcase while someone tries to work it through the gears.

if theres no movement there its in the box not the case if theres motion then its the tcase.

your next step if its no movement at the pto inspection port is to pull the rubber covers off the tunnel and then the shifter out of the box to confirm its not a damaged shifter or selector cup.

if its not that your stuck with a box pull.

best of luck Hope its just the hi/lo selector linkage.

well i pulled the seat box and floor panels out to make it easier then removed t/c all looked normal so i proceeded to remove ext hsg, got it all apart and guess what...............layshaft is sheared in two:(:(, luckily no other damage tho, everything was just sitting in place

all fixed, got the new shaft & bearings friday, assembled the box at work then took it home in the back of the getz:o:p, got a mate to help me lift it in then finished it off today, road tested-all good, doesnt even crunch into 2nd anymore:D:D:D.

did have a slight problem with the transfer selector-had to separate the selector hsg from the t/case and the selector lever/tab was loose and was just spinning on the shaft, tightened screw now all fixed:D:D

all in all im quite proud of myself - did the whole job on the ground out the front of my house except box assembly, didnt have tools at home to do that properly. only took a week and a half:)

thankyou to all who have helped with info and advice

cheers,
shane
