G'day
Does anybody have any info on importing a landy from the UK? As in what it costs to ship a landy over and what extra stuff that goes on like customs?
If anybody has a link to importers websites or land rover importer sites i would really appreciate it.
PS i'd be looking at landys SIIa - SIII.:D
Thanks, Adon:)

Whilst I cant help with costs and details for importing (perhaps speak to Reads90 on here for that)... There have been a few recent threads on this subject as well. Having said that, Im currently in the UK and looking at possibly moving out there and bringing my 110DC with me so am also interested in anyones comments.
I can put you in touch with a UK guy who has a MINT condition LWB SIII that up until last month he used for fairly regular (road) trips around Europe. Ive seen the receipt book and the S111, would wholly recommend it if thats what your after. He is a Landy fanatic has just bought an expedition prepared 300Tdi 110.

There's a whole lot of questions that need answering first about what you want, motivations, etc... and as Yorkshire_Jon has pointed out, if you do a search, there are various threads already on this subject.
Basically, it's not cheap!
However, one thought that comes to mind, if it's a Series vehicle you're after and you're not fussed about the condition, it might be easier & cheaper to bring one of the ex-army ones in from NZ.

Unless you are a POHM emigrating a personal import is almost impossible, and if you can cut through all the red tape very expensive,
To easily import a UK vehicle you must have owned it and used it in the UK for a minimum of 2 years........
I personally wouldn't waste your time or your money.

mmmm why would you want to import a rust bucket Seris from the Uk, that would need a re chassis the minute you got it here. Belive me Aus has some of the best looking and condition Seris trucks i have seen in years.
Next you will be telling me you want to import all the rust bucket RRC from the Uk :D:D:D
But if you really want to waste your money on a shed or want an expensive anchor then here goes. May sound ruff but unless you have been to the Uk and seen how trucks rust then you can't imaging th state of a Seris truck :)
Due to age you don't need to have owened it for 2 years or lived with it because it is over 15 years old where all the rule don't quite apply. But it will cost you 10 % GST and 10% import duty . And about $3000 to $5000 depending on when you order them to do it and what the rate of the dollar is doing for them to ship it to you :)

Just the shipping cost will be greater than buying a good series 2 or 3 here - let alone the original cost of the vehicle, customs duties etc etc etc

Granted there are some bloody awful examples. However, there are also some cherished ones that have already been re-chassied and looked after really well. All depends what you want I suppose. Even a mint series will cost top dollar though.

Hi,
I have just finished going through this. It will be an expensive excercise.
I was quoted 6k to import a P38 into the country. Plus the cost of the vehicle, plus getting it RWC & then going to the RTA for reg etc...
This was an all up figure. I spoke to a few people in the UK. I also chatted to customs & the Vicroads people. In the end it was too hard, too many questions & way too many rules..why, what, when, how long.
I also had a chat with a couple of friends in the UK & they said exactly what Reads has said..RUST! its a big problem so to speak in the UK as they throw salt on the roads in Winter to dissipate the snow. It ends up in chassis & eats them away.
I will wait a little longer for the vehicle i want, but gee its hard not having a Landy:(

Oh ok.. I will give that thought a miss then.
My plan was to get an old SWB or LWB and modify it and put a short tray on it then chuck a holden 186 in with a different gearbox and higher speed diffs and a set of 33 inch all terrain tyres.. Always loved landys as my dad has had them whilst i was growing up. I'm now 16yo and looking to get my first one ready for when i'm old enough to drive it properly:)
I will just have to wait untill one pops up over here cheap:(
Thank you all for your replys. Appreciate it;)

G'day Adon,
Quite an expensive option. I looked into importing a Lighweight Landrover from UK and was possible but would have cost me almost 10 grand to get what amounts to an average Series vehicle - albiet with a cool body.
Keep you eye on ebay and this forum. Post an ad in the wanted area. Look on carpoint.com You'll eventually find what you want.
I just sold my Series 2 with only an ad on this forum took about 3 months and I wasn't even trying. They come and go just be patient.
(Careful about mentioning the H word here:D --- Personally I like the 186 motor but plenty prefer the 2.25 for off road work - its a great little motor perhaps a bit breathless on the Hwy;))
I agree that a Rangie or early Disco is cheap as chips for this job but if you want the old series look then you'll find something before too long.
Cheers

You do realise that the poms are denuding OZ of series 1s and maybe 2s for all I know, as they can get virtually rust free ones here.
When I read the pom mags I cannot believe what they do to restore some old clunker which is 90% rust flakes.

Have to agree here to most of which has been said, rust is a big problem for an ex UK landy. Unless it is a very unique/rare model it is not really worth all the aggro, due to the costs involved. I have thought about it a few times, I have always had a soft spot for series 2/3 ex British army (or RAF) ambulances. Would love to import one over here, as they are very rare over this side of the world, (now getting rare in the UK) but still think it would cost more than what there worth. NZ could be a different matter though...
Good luck in what ever you decide though.:)

i shipped my 95 disco from the uk last sept ( along with a merc van ) . at first look at the red tape involved it does look a pain in the a*** , but now i have been through it i dont think its hard as what is made out.
The cost to ship the disco was £1300 pounds. the permit to shipped it was $50 aus, it got here in 5 weeks.
i had to get a valuation for customs $330 aus then i had quarrantine and handling approx $500 aus , then i paid duty on the disco which they valued at $7500 duty approx $900. i then had a choice of doing all the complying etc myself but got a guy who does this all the time to do it for me due to time.he did charge me approx $2000 and gave me the disco back all ready on the road with rego etc to drive away into oz in about a week. I would not hessitate to do it again and i would do it a lot cheaper as i now know what to do.
Despite what most people say about uk landys corroding , yes they do
but not as bad as is made out. i was an MOT inspector for years in the uk and from my experince they rusted about the same as any other car. they are so many options to get a good series with a new chassis and consideraing what a new chassis cost in the uk is peanuts compared to here in oz. best way to do it is do all the prep work and fit all the assesories
( much as you can ) in the uk and you will save a fortune .

before you all say it wasnt worth it . i had over $20,000 worth of extras on the vehicle, otherwise it would not be worth it. this is how you make it worth while .

Yes - but for an Australian to import a vehicle you need to have owned and used it personally for a period of ???? (1 year I think) or else major big time taxes are payable. That means living there for a period of time.
Customs are a wake up to loading up vehicles with accessories and most times you get away with it - but some times you will not - then as a minimum pay the duties, loose the car and or maybe prosecution.
I imported a vehicle from the UK many years ago after living there for the minimum 12 months - I have to agree that rust is not as bad as made out (they sort of know how to deal with it), the importing process was not as expensive or as difficult to do as some think and as long you do your homework. Oh - insure the car for its Aust value for shipping purposes not the UK value - my car was damaged and Lloyds would only pay out 2/3 of the claim because I insured it for its UK value - interestingly if I had insured for its Aust value and the ship sank on the way I would only have been paid the Uk value not the Aust value of the car - typical insurance companies.
