Hi,
what is the difference between a 110 defender and a 110 defender extreme? As far as i can tell it's TC in the extreme.. anything else?
particularly in the 2005 model td5 if of any importance.

Thanks

In the 05 model, they didn't actually do an "extreme". They stopped calling them that. For the 05 my they switched back to English build. You can pick them as the tops of the front doors had a round pressing. And of course by the VIN.

The only "extreme" specs were the 110 wagon. The differences were alloy wheels, power front windows, traction control and ABS, remote central locking and alarm, and cloth seats.

I think that's all. :)

And maybe colour schemes/ metallic? I'm not sure on that one.
And don't forget the STICKER

Thanks for that! The English builds have predominately white roofs, no matter what the colour :) The SA build ones in 04 had body coloured roofs.

The alarm and remote central arent standard, they are an option BUT most of the later extremes that were bought in had them anyway as thats what people wanted...

mines early and it doesnt have the alarm but does have the remote central module. All I need to do is activate it and get the fobs...

I thought that the post 02 extremes had a bullbar standard aswell?

2000 model Extreme.
TC, ABS, Alloy Wheels, Bullbar, Tow Bar, Metallic paint with white roof and of course the stickers.
No alarm hooked up or central locking or electric windows. Later models got this and a CD player.

04 Extreme
Power front windows, remote central locking, CD Player, bullbar, side steps, full metallic paint.

All Defender 110's from 2000 and onwards were released with TC, ABS and Alloy Wheels

For the 05 my they switched back to English build.

Actually I thought they switched from SA built to UK in 2002. I had an early 2002MY which was South African, followed by a late 02MY which was UK. Since then all the Aussie spec vehicles have come from the UK.

My early 02MY had the "Xtreme" stickers but the late 02MY did not. I was told that the stickers disappeared when they switched back to UK build because Australians generally didn't want them. According to Redbook however, the Australian 110s were still branded Xtreme (with or without stickers) from 1999 up to 2004 (03MY).

From 2004 onwards the only things that changed were external - no bullbar, no snorkel. The base vehicles have all been the same since 2000. All Defenders since at least early 02MY (SA build) have had central locking and alarm only this feature was not activated until 2005. I got key fobs programmed for both my 02MY Defenders - apparently it was not activated because of tax and import duty on cars with these "luxury" features or some-such nonsense.

My 2004 TD5 was South African built. I believe they stopped assembly in South Africa at the end of 2004.

That's weird. Were they importing from both factories then or did they switch back and forth? My 02MY was definitely UK built - it was one of the reasons I got it.

I believe they were importing from both as I've come across UK and SA built 2004 models. I think there was a period where they were only building them in SA but with plans to close down the SA assembly plant they started to supply the AU market from both sources until closure.

Funny how perceptions are formed depending on our backgrounds. I made sure mine is South-African built when I ordered it. Manufacturing, engineering and especially vehicle assembly have always been of a very high standard in SA. I would bet most of the "leaky" Defenders going around are pommie built

Hey my 2001 does not have tc or ABS .. so not all 2000 onwards has these features ;)

I can't comment on the earlier ones, but as Greylandy points out the 2004 models were definitely SA build.

I forgot about the other stuff too. The Elglish 05's like ours missed out on bullbars, sidesteps, and those little rear steps too :o

That's interesting. When getting mine I was advised by people within LR to avoid them and at the time I was buying the SA ones were available and better value than the English ones.

Most manufacturers that sell cars from SA have troubles with them. VW make all the Golfs sold locally there except for the German built R32 and 3door golf GTI (Polish?). The SA build cars are generally acknowledged to have more niggles.

Audi Australia imported one boat load of cars from their SA plant a few years ago and decided it was more trouble than it was worth. They are all imported from Germany now.

Ford build their Focus there and the SA built ones (not the German built XR5) are some of the worst finished cars on the market these days. You can put a pinky between the panel gaps, and the paint is atrocious.

I could go on but I think you get the picture. Let me say I'm not really convinced that it would make much difference with Defenders though... :) :wasntme:

My 2004 Extreme is South African build and came with the following,

Bullbar, side steps, alarm with remote, cd player, wing top checker plate, front mud flaps, alloy wheels, abs, tc, electric windows and cloth seats.

The side steps have been removed as they are made from tissue paper :D

The front mudflaps have been removed because they just got in the way :D

So is mine (2004 td5).

Does anyone know the UK & SA country codes so we can check the compliance plate?

The 11th digit in the VIN is the assembly location
A = Solihull
P = Rosslyn, Pretoria, South Africa (BMW plant 1995 - 2001)
Y = Silverton, Pretoria, South Africa (Ford plant 2001 on)

My 07MY now has the 11th digit as an "S" - presumably for Solihull - so I wonder when that changed.

May be the propaganda I was fed while living there ;)

Although, the examples you provide are all comparing German built vs SA built. Let’s be honest, nobody in the world - not even Toyota will come close to the quality of build out of Germany. I also doubt that companies like Volkswagen would stick with building vehicles in SA if build quality was a serious and continuous problem. They've been building Volkswagens in SA for decades.

Some real world experience, comparing my SA built TD5 to the UK built Puma - I can see a remarkable difference in basic things like panel alignment, gaps and attention to detail. I let you guess which one is better ...

That's interesting because SALLDHMS77A746113 was the MY07 Defender on display at the Melbourne Motor show early this year. The eighth digit is an S (Puma 2.4) while the 11th is still A (Solihull)

All South African Built Defenders that came to Aus will have a "V" as the 11th digit. UK spec builds are as always an "A".:D
I personally would only have a UK build spec....I have seen some doosy's.:eek:

The 11the digit of mine is indeed a "V" and is from the Blackheath, South Africa, for 147 specification.

If you go to Clifton Scientific Text Services, the Netherlands (http://www.clifton.nl) there is a utility there that will enable you to enter your VIN and find out all about your ride.

I'm ex South African, and no way would I buy any vehicle built or assembled in South Africa. They have tried to keep up with quality control but can't. VW sales man once proudly said that the car we were looking at here in perth was built in SA, I smiled and asked if they could get us a German one:):)
Thats my 10 cents worth.

That must have been a hard choice .. SA or German built. ;)
