Well, finally got a start on the other cab donated by Vern, for my 120, its become my spare time project, so it may not happen as rapid as the rest of them:(

I've started to extend the cab by 4"s the idea is enough room to fit my lanky body in, comfortable enough to drive it, no more, in other words, how they should of been built to start with:mad:

I'm considering an extra cab for my 120 also. I'm interested to see how you (your old man) finish off the recess you've created at the join, so it looks "pretty".

You'll be waiting patientally, unfortunately:(, but what will happen is get some aluminium folded up, to suit the gap, then checked, to mould to the fold:eek:, then sikaflexed in;), hihly likely the join won;t have body filler in it, 2 reason's

1. you see how buch a LR body flexs:eek:

2. you seen what an LR looks like from factory:twisted:

Slunnie

The white paint should be easier to match the sikaflex colour to also.

This would be cool with a bubble roof also.

Will the paint crack over the sikaflex?

Bubble roof.... You'd need a series screen, though Stirlsilver has changed his to songle glass.

Paint should be fairly resilient to flex, whether its sikaflex or bog, its all going to flex the same

No bubble roof, no more work than required on this one, when the cab is done, I have to lift off the body, repair all the outriggers, refit and fit out this cab with all the other gear and well, its only my beater ute, it moves dirt, wood, bark etc and the wife drives it to work when I've broken the Jag doing skids:angel:

Hi Matt. Where did you get the flexy looking air intake hose that goes between the plenum, gas ring and then gas ring and rigid intake hose on the Hilux?

Commodore;)

Its not 3", its a little larger, I usually use silicon hose(truck radiator hose) at near 3bucks an inch:mad:, but this was handy, some came with the motor, some was hanging around from a Rangie I wrecked ages ago:eek:

Don't pay to much attention to the pics, thats just sitting in there at the mo', gotta finish it off

Utemad

Thanks for that. I looked for ages for the right hose. Auto shops, hose places, truck places etc. None had it. Ended up bodgying up the factory intake hose to my gas ring. Will try a wrecker.

A little more time than it really should, but the 120" is so handy, I'm scared to pull it down anyway:eek:

Its full of fence posts and fenceing gear at the moment and I got 40ton of class 2 blue metal coming tomorrow for my drive, to start getting ready for asphalt, so its gonna be a while yet, oh and my rangie as a big list of love it needs first to:).............and I bought 2 more rangies to strip today:angel:

Anyhow, I don't use the 120" except for ute duties, so it may aswell stay together, anyhow, I'm thinking I'll make a toy out of this one:angel:

So, I'm thinking along the lines of Big Block, 11:5 comp, and I'm still tossing up whether I use an LT95 and build a sals and tough rover front, or just use the GQ running gear in A GQ that just happens to be hanging around here:confused:

Will get back into it, probably sept but:(, got my drive to finish before August, along with a heap of stuff here, then doing the Simpson in late august, riding with the old man in his Tojo, Birdsville races should be good!

Maybe you should get the rest of a GQ to go with the running gear you have and fit the big block to that.

Leave the poor old 120" alone........he's quite happy as he is. :D

I really want to use this as a tourer, but will get the cab done, stick it on the 120" after chassis repairs etc and see how it goes, if its comfy enough, it'll become the one, if not, the rangie gets a massive birthday:eek:

Cool.

The factory single cabs are definitely too short to allow a comfortable driving position for any of us taller drivers as our heads tend to hit the corner of the cab above the curved window !

If my 110 had an "extended cab" such as the one you are building, I'd have found a way to keep it !!

Still doesn't address the arm against the door problem:( Although will be much better with more stretch.

I merely put the fold in, pre drilled the holes, screwed it on (prior to rivets as it had to come off again for trimming) and rolled it over useing my forearms, hands, legs and knees, while screwing it into situ:D

Turned out better than I hoped to be honest:)

Hopefully next weekend, I'll get the infill on the up bit done, already got it sussed how to, trying to make it look like it came from the factory.......................which ain;t all that hard, when they're exposed rivetted together:D

Said to my old man, when he commented how it came out alright, I think I need to bash the sides up a bit with a ball pein hammer, to make it look like a new one:angel:

Well, after a coupld days, degreasing and pressurewashing, I've decided the chassis is a reject, to much rust throughout, so its cut in half and on the scrap pile:(

So now its to the 110" chassis the cab is on, will cut and fill an extra 10"s and build on that, also need to weld in the engine mounts that I've cut off the 120" chassis:)

They are a bastard for distorting when welded:mad: You will have to come up with a jig of some sort to help with this or it will be all over the place:( I have seen them done two ways. I personally don't like how the 120 is done but yours never failed and nor has mine yet touch wood.
I would prefer either the chassis cut split at the corners then cut a U shape and double sleeved with the outer sleeve going to the outrigger. Looks much neater.
The 120 was so crude with straight welds and a sleeve on the lower. But... it worked:)

I have some pics here of Rover extenda chassis and a jig, if I find them I'll put them up.

If you need some measurements I'll plumb bob mine and chalk it in a concrete floor and run a tape over it.:)

I didn't want to jig of the old chassis regardless, as it it kinks and bends where it shouldn't already, also patch work quilt where it had been repaired previously, so figured staring from scratch would be the go

My 120" had a box inside the rails, it was plug welded through the chassis, not that it would help much, actually, it has alot to do with the rust:mad:, obviously I didn;t find this till I hacked into it, it just looked to have 2 flat plats in each rail, with 2 U shape bits top and bottom, all very crude, the engine mounts were the deciding factor to junk it, the bottom welds are woeful......LR build quality, pfft:eek:

Pics would be great Tony, always up for ideas:)

Hey Matt, Just an idea I had years ago wile building a series hybrid on a stretched Rangie chassis... Lift the outriggers etc 2" and brace over the top . Lift the engine and gear box mounts, then run a double cardan joint on the front shaft. Then a front sals will clear the sump:cool:
If you get a 130 chassis you wouldn't bother as to much stuffing around:( The above idea will keep the suspension geometry very nice and can run long down travel but retain near stock ride height in effect.

I think a 130 chassis even at 1K would be cheaper than buggering around extending a 110 somehow.:)

Well that was a pleasure:(, So the truck driver rings me up last night at 2130, I'll be at fowles tomorrow with your chassis! you need to pick it up, **** me, had to knock off work early, steal the companys trailer, convince the manager at fowles to load me, pay $50, nice dealings when you get told it will be at a depot, pick it up when you can.....

Anyhow, I have it, just to get it on the roof for the trip home, tomorrow, which we'll have a 200T crane at work, but probably be way to late by the time we finish with it, worst case, I'll take the trailer home and have to make the 7 hour return trip

So, it needs, engine mounts removed, Isuzu ones welded on, fuel tank mounts from other chassis welded on, to suit early tank, cleaning, lots off, aux fuel tank mounts, then whether to add some fishplates, then blast, then gal, hmmm, project time frame is growing :D

Some things you my think about....... Brackets for the Aux battery,Air tank, compressor and under tray water tanks. May be a storage compartment.:)

How does your second tank being high, stop you from using it?

I'm hoping to fit two N70 sized optima's under the seat still....

Just use a portable compressor, will make some brackets for 9kg LPG bottles on one side of the tray, also a storage draw, running from aux tank, through to and out the back, for tools, spares etc and the water tank is still under thought, will need to get one tiged up, not sure whether to go sill, or make a funny shape and surround the aux tank

Keep the thoughts coming though:)

Cut and shut rear mounty bits, are done

Grind back gal, weld, paint with cold gal.

I am sure you wouldn't regret it. Gal will still protect bare metal patches up to 5mm diam. in salt water.

It's the inside of the chassis that's always a concern for me ... When you weld or drill, you can easily paint the outside to protect, but how do you recoat the burnt paint / galv inside the chassis :(

I've always toyed with the idea of plugging up all the holes of the rails and pressure filling it up with Red Oxide paint ... Or ... liquid Tar ... till absolutely over flowing (Full) and then letting it drain out .... If you get my drift

BTW .... Looking good Matt

Since gal is a sacrificial coating, it corrodes in preference to the steel. As I mentioned above, studies have been done on zinc plated steel sheet where the zinc has been removed in circular sections of incresing size, and the panel then sprayed repeatedly with salt water. Sections of bare steel 5mm diam and smaller didn't even develop surface rust!!!

Ideally, youwould spray some cole gal on the inside of the chassis where the weld was with a degreasing gun or similar. But in reality, unless you used silly amounts of heat when welding I doubt that any internal rust would develop, as enough zinc should be left behind (or sufficiently close nearby).

Forgot to say - great work Matt!

Yea, but I've welded plenty of gal before and no matter how much you grind off its never pleasant:D

Not to worry, got 4L of machinery grey now and will be filling the rails with rust proof wax, so should stay relatively rust free

Got lots of shiny bits, new grill surrounds, lights, ind, Madman EMS, diff cover, steering box, ordered disc handbrake, just chasing flares now, arms, panhard, 2 new fuel tanks on order, all bushes....heaps more, gonna be a 15k minimum rebuild I think:eek:

Not much more I can tell. I know people who have needed one in the line to the rear when converting to rear discs. Apparently volvo make one which can be adjusted (when dismantled - which is legal - unliike the externally adjustable willwood type).

I don't think the defenders have one, but I think it is incorporated into the valve block on the lower firewall below the MC.

I am about to convert to rear discs too, but was gooing to suck it and see if the rears lock up before the fronts.

The Nissan Hardbodies had an adjustable load proportioning valve that used the rear diff to deck height as a measurement: the heavier the load, the lower the deack, therefore more brake-force was applied.

They should be cheap as chips, and would be easy to install, as well as legal?

Start to dummy seat positions so as to make lifted rails that sit further back

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/05/1255.jpg

Played more wiring, well, removing more, installed EDIC motor and relay, changing instruments around, 2 fuel gauges and a tacho shall reside in the dash, as the madman takes care of everything else, seems a good unit, have a nice noisey alarm buzzer to add to it, will also fit some headlight relays. likely under dash, whilst modding the fuse holders

Very good idea replacing the master cylinders:) Nothing worse if you in the never-never and one fails:(

Using 130 brake pipes?

Yea, lots of new bits on this thing, hydraulic stuff, steering box, all bushes with superpro, wheel bearings, seals, gaskets, clutch..........

Got the rear line sent across with the chassis, but its pretty trashed, just buy a roll of bundy tube, make my own, standard line even has a joiner in it:D

Correct, RR body is awaiting its new owner, when its stripped

Nah, different turbo, one of them funny variable jobbies and still unsure on intercooling just yet, will try with just a cross over pipe, intercooler will be a concern when its a going unit, wanting to keep rub points to a minimum, see how EGT's so with no cooler, hopefully with this turbo it should still be as good if not a little better than before, prior to intercooling, will give me the ability to find out, how good intercooling is, with before and after temps etc

Yea, was going to set up piping so as to link both tanks incase of that, but this should prove a much better way, so long as it holds bleed, when switched over with no lift pumps

Tray, Canopy, under tray draw, storage unit, tie down stuff, cruise control, rear view camera, springs, make overhead console, tacho and sender, snorkel, still procrastinating radiator, solar setup....then retrim whole interior, stereo, big wire up for all accessories, lights etc

Got the steering wheel boss, to machine the backface, so it takes the indicator canceler doohicky

Silly question, is it just a large phillips that you use to undo the door hinges or do you use an impact driver? I have a new set of mirrors to install and I need to remove both top hinges.

Well, I know its different to the old one, in that I had to redrill as the PCD was different and get 2 6mm plates profile cut, so as to space it correctly

Maybe you could add some legs instead of wheels and turn it into something like this?
