Hiya,

Writing out my Santa list and 4WD gear is at the top of the list (Well, actually tyres are at the top of the list but I've convinced SWMBO that these don't count as Xmas presents).

Don't have a winch. Do have a snatch strap kit, shovel and ax. So what else do I need?

Maxtracks?
Those roll-out mat things that Bushranger make?
Hand winch?

Cheers.

Can't have you D3 owners getting those flash threads dirty:p

I've been thinking about how to prioritise this kind of stuff as well, especially on a budget.

A hand winch would ensure that you'd get out of pretty much anything, but I can't afford one and all the kit that goes with it at the moment, and they're a fair bit of work if all you need is something like maxtrax. For me, maxtrax would get me out of most of the bogs I'd get stuck in over the next 6 months, and/or a high lift jack. A high lift jack is a great bit of kit per $$$ spent.

So that's how I'm prioritising recovery gear...

A hi-lift is versatile, but where would you mount it on a D3... unless its got a bullbar & rear step from Kaymar et al.

High lift jacks, while being good are a pita to find somewhere to store, and points to jack on. On marks D3 would be alot of fun.

But you can use them as a hand winch. So if you buy one, don't bother with the hand winch.

BTW, did you know, the repco high lift jack is the only one with an AS WLL of 2t, all the rest are well below this, including the mega expensive original from ARB.

Just wait for the catalogue specials they have.

maxtrax = storage issues, from memory you don't have a roof rack

hand winch = a little bulky and needs to be well secured....did i mention hard work

True.....but I could supervise the goings on from the comfort of my dual climate controlled leather interior, making sure the great unwashed (130 drivers) don't scratch the duco:wasntme:

They're on special for $99 at the moment :) Although I've got no idea where I'd jack from on my D1, let alone a D3  I'm guessing they designed the defender to use all this recovery gear, glad we're bringing the shed to Cape York :wasntme:

So how do you work out what size hand winch?

T-Max sell the following:
ATMHW800 Hand Winch 800kg
ATMHW1600 Hand Winch 1600kg
ATMHW3200 Hand Winch 3200kg

Obviously (I think) you're not looking for a rating equal to the gross weight of the vehicle. ie a D3 @ 2800kg. It'd be the rolling resistance + that added by the situation itself?

WhiteD3
5th November 2008, 12:04 PM
No one's mentioned these yet.

These are used to pull (as opposed to snatch) a vehicle out of a bog?

Heresay is that the fatal accident earlier this year at Black Duck was due to the inappropriate use of a chain?

If you're going out alone the handwinch would be probably your most useful investment.
Very versatile piece of kit around home too. ;):D

Make sure you get a snatch block, 20m winch extension strap, tree trunk protector and 3-4 rated shackles to go with it.

And practice setting it up in various configurations ( eg single line pull, double line etc ) before you go out.

there are a few members that are well versed on working out wieghts or allowance for bogged vehicles

i have never really used a handwinch except for competitions at 4wd gatherings

at a guess 1600kg, the handwinches have shear pins where the handle connects to the shaft so there is little chance of you overloading it

check out the weight of each of them, that my help decide.

Nobody has mentioned a good compressor yet. If you go the hand winch rather than the high lift then an exhaust jack may also be useful. Tyre removal, replace and repair kit is another bit of gear that should be in there.

That 1600kg is the lift capacity, the pulling capacity for a 1600kg handwinch is 2400kg, if you are pulling a dead weight (ie) 2800kg D3 then you would use the snatch block, 2 is better, this is also where a Hilift comes in handy, if of coarse you can get access to lift the vehicle to aid in the pulling out of the vehicle.

OR

get the biggest handwinch, which means double the pulling weight AND double the price, most will get the 1600kg/2400kg winch.

Useing a hi lift as a winch is by far a joke:p

Turfir with a snatch block, shackles, and tree trunk protector, will get you out of anything

And hopefully useing the hand winch will be deterant enough that you wont get stuck again:eek:

Then you'll be a Warn like you should have from the start:wasntme:

I've got a Tirfor TU516 (1600/2400kg) hand winch for the D3 when I can't use the front winch. If you go for the next size up they only get bigger and heavier thus harder to store safely. So as Baz says go the 1600/2400kg size with 2 snatch blocks, tree trunk protectors and a winch extension strap.

Using those attachments for hi-lifts to directly lift your wheels get's the stuck part out of the hole so are handy even if you do have lift points...

So which size would you recommend?

Just a thought here,

I have a hand winch, and it works no worries, but is small and only big enough for a freelander. As a downside, it only pulls a little over a meter at a time (due to a double line pull). This is far less than the length of the fixed length straps. Rated chain, rates shackles, and good chocks might be a worthy addition for use between the straps and hand winch. Shorten it every pull.

Cheers!

Before i get blasted for mentioning chain, i also mentioned 'rated' and my discalimer says 'do not use for dynamic recovery'.

Who needs recovery gear.

This solves both problems, tyres and the need for recovery gear :p

MATTRACKS rubber track conversions systems for 4x4 vehicles (http://www.mattracks.com/)

There's some great vids on youtube of some of thier stuff working.

You will still need the snatchy to pull eveyone else out.

Oh and by the way, I know of somewhere a D3 cant go, I pulled one out a couple of years back.....they found out that they dont like Mud that is about 2' deep very much.

I have to say though, i wouldnt have tried it in my D1 even if it was twin locked unless I had simex's or swampers or something like that.

I was impressed that I nearly pulled the bull bar off my disco and the ****y D3 screw in recovery points held up, I hid behind the door though :o

D3 recovery points are pretty good and solid.

Im pretty sure that If they were going to break they would have when I winched the one out that time as my bull bar ended up a bit bent and was making strange noises as well as I had to bog mine and strap it to a tree to pull him out.

D2's have no recovery points

I tend to carry a hand winch and recovery straps, plus 4 x 3 foot star pickets, plus hi lift and bridging ladders from the grating co. so much better than max tracs in my opinion as you can bridge gaps without snapping them in half! they also make life so easy when you get bogged in sand!:) but hey how long is a piece of string every boby will have a different wish list, mine is .................................................. ..............!

99.9% of the time all you really need is another 4wd to pull you out of anything

if your going to buy a hand winch get a tirfor its nots as hard to operate as everyone makes out, real issue is threading the 90 metres of steel wire through the jaws when you only need to pull yourself 5 metres or less out of where your bogged.

if your getting a winch hand or electric invest in a land anchor as rarely do you ever get a tree or boulder where you need an anchor point

if your muscles say your too old and unfit to get a hand winch buy yourself a air bag to go underneath car rather than a high lift jack with sand or mud boards to go under tyres once your lifted in the air

The other piece of useful kit is 2x2 piece 20 mm plus marine ply which is varnished wiht few coats to use as base for whatever your using as a jacking equipment under car in sand mud or water.

One of the best additions to recovery kit is ingenuity...

"Necessity is the mother of all invention" :D

However, as a bare minimum, a bottle jack & a shovel.

Then, in order of priority...

Self Recovery

Hi-Lift
Chain, 2x strops, 2x shackles.
10M rope (with hooks).
Sand ladders
Hand Winch (Turfor)

Group Recovery (i.e. there is a 2nd vehicle)

Ropes (10M, 5M & 1.5M)

Also, remember that it's worth making sure you have decent anchor points on the vehicle too...
