How long before some good ol' boy who can't stand the thought of **gger in the White house takes a pot shot at him?
If they succeed, what are the consequences?

The only thing that's surprised me, is that someone hasn't had him assassinated yet.

Listening to the news this arvo, and apparently there have been no young children in the Whitehouse for a long time. It was mentioned that people are making comparisons to the Kennedy era...........

Hope that's the only comparison................ if you catch my drift.

As for McCain, well, what can I say, really can you imagine what would have happened?????

Wonder what his new slogan should be... "Ahhh McCain, you missed it again!!" :D:D:D

Glad you guys find this debacle so amusing. The next four years are looking pretty scary around here. Living less than 25 miles from the white house I can assure you now that he is the president elect it would be extremely difficult for some one to get to him. I have some friends that are Secret Service agents and the security the US President has is second only to that afforded to Osama Bin Laden. How long before our follies here impact your economy there ?
Cheers,
Doug

btw- petrol has dropped to $2.17 per sae gallon for regular grade 87 octane
diesel is still around $3 a gallon

So you would have preferred grandpa McCain and Bible Spice??? Puhleeze...

As far as Australian Politics is concerned, the (US) Democrats are more right wing than both of our major parties...

You guys in the states take your politics a lot more serious than we do,, the months and months of lead-up to today is something I find hard to comprehend:eek:

as for your follies,,,
are we taking financial?
basically 24 hours:mad:

politically?
well I not sure how exactly a democrat differs from a republican,, but our pollies are now so similar as to be indistinguisable from one another,,;):D

military?
most of our Defence Forces are involved in Peacekeeping now,, so WHEN you pull out of the current conflicts, it will make little difference to us.
I imagine we will still be allied very closely.

Ice Follies?
yep, have em, love em.:p

Bible Spice- LOL !
No can't say there was a preference there- more like trying to choose the lesser evil. Obviously there was a overwhelming desire for change here-our economy is the worst its been since the great depression of the 1930's. Interesting that both parties there are more liberal. Not much coverage of your politics available here. The closest one can get to an outside perspective on US politics is watching BBC world news. Honestly our House and Senate were already controlled by the Democratic party so their agenda was already being carried legislatively.
If things proceed per the campaign promises we will begin to pull out of Afghanistan,Iraq, S.Korea, and all the other places the rest of the world resent US presence. It will be interesting to see how the long term effects of the recent gazzillion dollar Walls Street financial bailouts pan out.

Surely pulling out of unwinnable conflicts and stopping hemoraging money can only be a good thing??? If Bush had spent less time going after people who "tried to kill my daddy" and more time sorting out what was happening inside the country... ...Obama has a huge job to do...

Agreed ! The whole weapons of mass destruction farce has not been forgotten.
The US economy usually does quite well when the military is engaged in a conflict- a great portion of our economy is tied to weapons, weapons development, and all the associated technologies. One of the biggest battles on foreseable horizon is the military spending cutbacks, base closures, and politicians scrambling to keep military bases and defense contractors in their respective voting districts from being shut down. When the jobs are lost locally the politician's constituancy immediately looks for change/promises of jobs ie..end of political career.

When the US aren't involved in conflicts, the arms manufacturers seem to be good at finding other markets for their weapons...

I wouldnt say its a debacle at all. I would say that you now have someone that doesnt actually have a conflict of interest when it comes to oil....... George Dubya, now theres a debacle and one that I did find amusing!!

As for economy, Im happy that you know what it means as you havent had one for quite some time :D

Pulling out of Iraq is one thing, but Afghanistan? Surely not! If there was ever a justifiable conflict I'd have to say that is it. Over 3000 American AND international lives lost because of Bin Laden, and the Taliban backed Al-Queda.

I too reckon Obama won't see out his first term....

hmm well quite apart from the political farce it is to have a two year run up to an election, lets face facts, the poor bloke is NEVER going to live up to the weight of expectation now on his skinny little shoulders :)

Obama is a great "pop star" but will still have to deal with the fact that he owes so much to so many conflicted interests that are now going to call those favours - might just end up as a great president, but probably will go down as a great personality cult figure that made it not by winning, but by the other guy losing it (in this case by association with George W).

actually, Obama's policy has always been a withdrawal from the war in Iraq and an increased commitment in Afghanistan - which i reckon is pretty fair.

I didn't mean to sound flippant. Seriously, I've been to the States and was amazed to hear that some people we met who were in a mixed colour marriage couldn't drive from Washington D.C to Florida for fear of getting dragged out their car and killed. Apparently it's just not done in the minds of some people.
I remember visiting the White House and standing in Pennsylvania Ave and looking around at all the buildings around to see if there were watchers on the rooftops, there were.
The problem for the Secret Service is that as the figurehead for the free world, Barak Obama can't hide in a cave in Tora Bora or wherever.
As for economics, at work we receive a fair amount of our stock from the U.S., unfortunately the disparity in the Dollar means that our costs have all but doubled:(
P.S
As for my query as to might happen were Mr Obama to be Assassinated, could it result in Civil war? After all, there is a lot of emotion involved here.

Lets hope nothing happens. There is enough strife in the world @ this point. The idea of Joe Biden as president doesn't put a smile on my face.
The Rodney King beating in LA years ago resulted in huge riots. God forbid something should happen @ the Presidential level. They arrested some white supremacists/red necks last week who were plotting a killing spree that was to end with an attempt on Obama. These fellows were knabbed while still making their plans (to use a ww2 phrase-loose lips sink ships, ).
