View Full Version : Salisbury Diff with built in practical joke?

Yesterday I though I'd be a good lad and check if there was any fluid in the necessary places in the County before going off to spectate at this weekends LROCS Tuff Trip.
In due course I came to the Salisbury diff and removed the filler plug (which seemed a little loose) dipped in the finger - finger oily, oil is not grey, all good! So I put the filler plug back in and give it some turns, still not tight, give it some more turns and it's still barely more than 'hand' tight. Gave it some more turns and I'm wondering "How thick is the cover plate on this diff?" when PLUNK the filler plug disappears down inside the diff housing. :oops2: I think I said to myself "Goodness me I wonder how that could have happened?" but might have used different words.:o
There followed lots of entertainment involving magnetic probes and fiddling with thin nose pliers, screwdrivers, etc. :wallbash: Finally I managed to get the drain plug onto the end of a half-inch extension bar (still inside the diff) and was lucky enough to get the threads to bight before it fell off again, so I could unscrew it back to the outside world.
For now I've secured it with some threadlocker but I'm curious what's happened here, surely this isn't 'normal' for a Sals is it?

and I thought it was only AJ's who did that.
either the taper been wound in so many times that its expanded the housing OR...
someones replaced your taper bung with a parallel one.

Let's face it Dave, you were never meant for this County & it was never meant for you :).
You should be Land Rovering forwards, not backwards, & get yourself a Range Rover.
Preferably a silver one like mine. In fact: mine ;).

I'm glad Im not the only one whose done that!!! I ended up just taking the back plate off to retrieve my one, so much for a 15 minute oil change!

One method I've heard to reduce the size of the plug hole is to place a socket over the rim of the hole and give the socket a gentle tap to cave the rim in slightly.

If anyone is interested, the small plug from a 44 gal drum fits fine, it even has an O ring to seal up against. I fit a lot of these due to the problem mentioned by DD, it IS common. I have had a 44gal plug in my sals for about 90k now, and plenty of customers with the same:)

I'm glad you all enjoyed my story :D and thanks for the interesting suggestions (except for Scouse's) :p
Isuzurover - what's the use of that? It doesn't even have a bung.

Solid Axle Industries (http://www.solidaxle.com/) (hint - dana 60 = salisbury)
Dave - if you had one of them, the bung wouldn't go in too far ;)

Thanks rick130, will the Dana 60 cover fit on neat without doing any mods, shaving etc. I want to fit it without doing and shaving etc to my diff, do all the bolt holes line up exactly. Thanks Bearman

Yes, you just have to throw away the bolts they supply and get some metric ones (12mm coarse ??) as the new cover is 8mm thick and therefore the OE bolts aren't long enough.
The new cover is good in that the fill hole is higher (for a high pinion diff) so you can easily add a little extra oil if you are running oil lubed bearings.
I use an 80W-140 gear lube too as the iron cover won't dissipate heat anywhere near as fast as the pressed tin cover.

Just buy one of these:
I bought one of these recently from a mate in Melbourne. I don't think he stocks them, but next time I see him I'll ask if he can still get them. I haven't got around to fitting it yet.

I replaced my plug because it was screwing in too far with a tapered stainless steel bolt supplied from Purple Pig in Bayswater. (Fittings and hosing supplier). Mind you it has to be turned down a little to stop hitting the inside of the diff.
I'd be interested in knowing how much they cost for the Solid rear cover too if your mate can get them.
Thanks

More copyright issues:eek:, but I'm sure they'd understand it's for the good of the brand ;)
Actually it's a fairly straight forward shape to cast..........if I didn't have a million other things to do I might look into it.
