G'day Folks :)
I have a technical question, 1985 Rangie 3.5 carby model, which has a broken alternator bracket, please don't tell me that I have to remove the Power Steering Pump to get it off :( bracket is broken at the lower mounting at the head/block stud, this would be the reason that the upper inner bolt left home, lucky it went down and under the vehicle and didn't leave via the Radiator :o this will be my little job for tomorrow :(
P.S. the Rave CD is a little vague as to how it is removed, but, by the look of it, the bracket is located by the power steering pump.
cheers

If it's the same as my '87 then the PAS pump needs to be removed. I didn't remove mine altogether though as the hoses allow some movement once the mounts are removed.

Just went downstairs and had a look at mine. Its located on the opposite side to the PAS and should be able to be removed on its own. Mind you I have the radiator and support panel out so it may be a bit more difficult with everything else in there. If you can post a photo of yours I can compare it to the one on the engine that is going on the scrapheap and I can remove the bracket for you as long as you arent in a screaming hurry.

G'day jbarracl :)
The bracket on mine mounts on the left hand side with the bracket behind the power steering pump, which is also on the left side of the block,it has the old tin type of PS reservoir also on the left, nicely nestled in with the 2nd battery. sorry I am not able to post a pic :(
but would be interested in the bracket if it is of no use to you :)

Mines on the drivers side so probably no use. Its an 81 model, they must have changed them somewhere along the line

YUP! yours is on the opposite side to mine, but I would be interested in the alternater fan shroud as mine is missing:) looks like I will be removing my power steering unit to get access to the bracket and off to Inc's for a weld jobbie ;) then put it all back together. after that I can get the headlamp relay wired in, so I can have decent reliable lights :)

Maybe I can be of assistance, I have 2 1985 Range Rovers and my daily driver has had 4 of the brackets in it's life. It seems that I get about 5 years or so out of each one. Welding only lasts a couple of years before it cracks again in the same spot.
Graeme Cooper's have replaced the last 2 so it has been about 15 years since I did one myself. These days I get a new bracket each time, they last longer than the repair.
From memory the bracket only shares one bolt with the PAS pump. I bolt is above the bolt for the pump on front of the valley, then there is the bolt on the front of the manifold and the only one that could be shared is the one underneath the pump, which from memory is one very long one. My recollection is that the pump stayed in situ but loosened off.

In the picture you can see the bracket in gold passivated zinc, the bolt you can see adjacent the lifting ring is not one of the PAS pump bolts. You can also see that the bracket is sitting above the pump and drops down behind it.
Sorry I can't be of more assistance.

P.S. Yes I know it doesn't look like a carby V8, but all the fittings are genuine 1985 model.

Not sure what I am going to do with the alternator yet. Not sure if it is the right one for that model as the pulleys are out of alignment. Cant figure out how the previous owner drove it without throwing a belt.

G'day Lotz-A-Landies :)
Thanks for the pic, yup! that's the bracket :) and mine also looks like it has the wrong top radiator hose on it, as it sits on the alternator bracket, should be NTC-1081, same as yours, which is cranked to the right after leaving the radiator, also note that your alternator bracket is different to mine, as it has an angled bend in it, where as mine is straight, this vehicle in running a Bosch alternator much more user friendly than a Lucas unit, still learning about this beastie, and sussing out the problems, like up graded h'lights with driving lights and NO relay  = one HOT dip/indicator switch :( but I will get it sorted, I hope!
Yes, I think that a new alternator bracket will be on the shopping list in the near future, just got to work through the vehicle one bit at a time.
I love the location of your battery earth cable :) attached to the alternator, I gather that you have dual batteries.

I have the alternator bracket setup that Lotz-A-landies posted ... It is mostly straight with a slight turn in it
It is bolted to the water pump in front of the Dizzy
I found that the fan belt for the Alternator to be VERY fussy in size .. Had to be spot on diameter ...+ or - 5mm and it could not be fitted correctly
So I cut and lengthened the bracket 20mm so I could get more adjustment ... solves the problem of the "Gotta be that size belt or nothing"

I don't know whether the bracket on mine is the genuine bracket or as I suspect a reinforced one that Graeme has in stock, my thoughts is that it is the latter. What I remember is that they didn't last very long in the early days. The angled part that you mentioned is in fact a reinforcing/stablising element of the bracket and one of the aspects that reminds me that it is an after-market reinforced bracket.
You will notice that my alternator is also Bosch with the tacho tap added, and also that the alternator adjustment bar has been cut and extended to suit the Bosch unit on the reinforced bracket.
Yes I do have dual batteries and that is the earth for the second battery.

G'day Folks :)
Just a quick update on the Alternator Bracket :( well, got it off after semi-removing the PS pump, only to find that the lower mounting bolt inaccessable because it is fitted with extractors, and the forward exhaust flange is just profile cut and overlaps the access space needed to get a 9/16th socket in to it,so, with a little help from a 4"grinder and a thin cutting disc, and a supercheap "superworks" dremmel type tool with a die-grinder tip, Wallah! one relieved exhaust flange :D so with a 9/16thAF socket and a 12inch extension broken bit out ready for re-welding, then on checking the inner mounting hole where the missing bolt is,:eek2::eek2:bolt hasn't left home, only the head and 1/8inch of it,the rest is still in the head :( so I now have to remove the fan shroud and the viscous fan, so I can get a drill into the bolt to drill and "easyout it" out  it is a grade 5 bolt :(
My sincere thanks to Incisor for welding the bracket for me,as it now should be as strong as, or close to it as the original bracket was.and for his advice on removal of the fan unit;) if it is fine tomorrow I will have another go at it:)
cheers
