View Full Version : 300Tdi coolant reservoirs

I recently replaced the coolant reservoir on my 300Tdi for the second time. I hadn't had to top up the coolant but I did notice it just starting to weep along the join. I only got four years life out of the old one which is not too inspiring. You would think that somebody somewhere would have come up with an aftermarket one that actually lasts.

There is someone on Ebay selling stainless steel or aluminium ones for around $300- a lot of money i know but would last 1000 years.

The black plastic ones have a bad reputation. By all accounts the white plastic replacements have overcome the problem of seam failure.

The white plastic ones are better, I have never had to replace one of them yet.

Some I have fitted quite a few years and KM's ago too.

our white plastic replacement tanks are ok (so far that is) .... fingers crossed

at least the weep on the black tanks gave us a little warning.... :)

Check your cap is venting, I have come across 2 split tanks on the same Disco that were caused by the cap nopt venting under pressure.

30PSI is the max I think from memory.

15 psi.
I've had problems with aftermarket ones not sealing.
The genuine caps (German) are cheap from places like the company in Sydney that cannot be named. Pt # NTC7161 (just happened to have the invoice sitting here :D)

Haven't had a problem yet from the genuine white tank I fitted a few years back either.

I'm not so sure about that. The one I just replaced was a white one. But at least it did give me warning. I'm not sure whether the cap was working properly. I replaced it anyway. Cheap enough to do so (from the unnamed place in Sydney - why can't we mention its name?)

more they don't like their prices bandied around as they are primarily a wholesaler. ;)

310,000 on the original black one, Ive never replaced it and Ive had the car since 180,000 and when I bought it I got a pile of invoices and I cant remember seeing one for an expansion tank so Im thinking it may have been a bad batch or something which let go early.

Im with Chris, do normal preventative maintenance E.g. belts hoses etc but that sort of thing is best done if it breaks.

Ive had mine pumped up to 50Psi looking for a coolant leak and it didnt split the tank......I was partly stressing about it as well but so far touch wood it is fine.
