I got offered a petrol 4cly engine and gearbox on the weekend for free.

Should I rip the 186 holden out of the Series 3 and drop this in? Prior to the Holden it was a 6cly rover donk so there will be some mods to be done.

Will the 4cly be strong/powerful enough to haul a series 3 ragtop around?

Save for engine mounts, could the engine/gearbox slot in to the existing diffs etc ok?

hmmm.... maybe the holden is ok with dropping fuel prices?

cheers

Anything is possible however the 6cyl chassis has the gearbox mounted about 4" further back so space and making the accelerator linkages work may be an issue.

the bell housing is different as well, but a 4 cyl one would bokt in.

I can offer up a SIII 4 pot gearbox that needs work but should take all your existing parts from the 6 pot box.

you will need to change some stuff but nothing thats insurmountable.

I would suggest leaving the box in place, and moving the motor back to mate it up by the fabrication of new mounts then ditch the fan and run electrics.

G'day Jimmy, I have a SWB series 3 with 2.25 petrol in good tune, and it's fantastic. Have had some problems with electrics (I have blamed mostly Bathurst winter for it) but otherwise have had a great run with it. SWB ragtop doesn't weigh much so the motor does it well IMO.
