G'day All!
I recently bought my self a 200tdi defender and I got the timing belt done a week ago and it's gone really badly since then. I think the belt must of gone on wrongly.... Will bring it back to who did it tomorrow.
But even before it was done it would not sit on 100km/h very well and I was just wondering how well other peoples 200tdi defenders go!?
Cheers

Hi Ben, yes it definately sounds like they mistimed it. You can get them to give me a call if you like at work on 0408 995 635 and I'll talk them through it.
There is a few minor tweaks to get the 200tdi to go better, they are a fantastic engine IMHO.

So would you say that you should be able to cruise at 100km/h ok!?

Are you kidding??? Flat throttle it should see 130Kmh easily. 100km/hr is a cinch when they are set up right, and at that speed cruising you should see 10 to 11 litres/ 100km fuel consumption too.(27 to 28 MPG)
I must add that valve clearances are critical on ALL Tdi engines for good performance. .008" (.208mm) hot or cold, inlet and exhaust, checked every 10,000 to 15,000 Km.
This IS important, as they can pick up as much as a WHOLE GEAR up hills when the valves are adjusted right.

Nah I was not kidding!:) I am glad to hear that they should go a lot better then what mine is doing! But my only concern that there might be some thing wrong with mine. It has only done 220000kms so I would assume that it would still be good!
Thanks for you help mate! :D
Might get him to give you a call tomorrow.
Cheers

oh yeah would it be worth bringing the car to a diesel specialist or land rover place to get the engine set up right!?

Where are you located??? I'm sure not TOO far from someone who knows these engines? ALL Tdi's need to go to a real Landy enthusiast etc to get set up right. They need loving care and the right touch:)

I am in Maleny in QLD and Brittish off road is just down the road and Allan Jennings isn't too far away either.... But I have no money after the timing belt being done and the steering box went on it in the same week!:o

My 200 TDI discovery sits on 100- 110 klm all day every day and it does it easily. I have had it up to 130 klm per hour but it does not feel comfortable at this speed. 110 is a nice speed but it tends to go through the juice at a far greater rate than 100. On the open road I get around 750-800 klms per tank. not sure if that's good or bad but I'm happy with that.

Not familiar with Alan Jennings but BOR should be able to sort it for a reasonable sum. Do yourself a favour and use either of them from now on, find a Landy enthusiast Mech and stick with them.

I have a retro fitted 200Tdi in my county, it will sit on 100km easy even with compression so bad that if parked on a modest hill with no hand brake it will roll over the engine compression :o. Currently parked up until i get alot of funds for an engine rebuild :(, luckly i have another V8 county to drive :D.

Yeah that does make sence.... I will get the guy that did the timing to fix that then save up for British Off Road to check out the engine properly!:D

I test drove a 200 a few months ago, flat out it did 90,popped the bonnet, wound a good 1/2 inch of slack out of the throttle and it then went like stink. The owner nearly shook my arm off!!!. Pat

It sounds like they may have gotten it out of time a bit. Supposedly you can be one tooth off on the cam belt and not have it make much difference. Two teeth and it will run like crap. I did the belt on mine following these instructions
Dividing Creek Rover Imports - 200 Tdi Timing Belt Replacement**If you cannot view the photo's on this page try printing the article. I have gotten a couple of emails that some cannot view the photo's.*The following article was borrowed from the t (http://dividingcreekroverimports.com/200_tdi_timing_belt_replacement)
and it turned out great. Any chance you have a boost leak in the pipes or intercoooler ? That would make the truck run like a dog. I have had mine up to 85mph and it had more-just didn't feel safe with 4 inch lift and 33's and several hundred pound on the roof rack.
