View Full Version : what would you build with 10 grand

okay, just say I had 10 grand to spend on building a truck that could hold its own in the mud, on the beach, tow a trailer of camping gear for a family and not be a pig to drive on the road.
what would you buy, RRC of course, but which model and then what accessories would you get? remembering the budget
oh, and the budget includes the initial cost of the 4x4.
looking for ideas from the RRC gurus :D

Range Rover Classic circa 1987/88 with 32" tyres. Detroitt locker on the rear and Truetrac on the front diff.
Shop for a Tdi300 engine to fit on the beast if you have some change left.
No winch is needed, remember that it is not a Patrol ;)
Second option a Disco Tdi 300 with Detroit locker at the back only because the initial investment on the Disco is greater than the the one for the RR

I am not sure Pete. When you start buying accessories new, they soon add up and things can get out of control.
I was thinking along the lines
mid 80's RRC in stock form $4k hopefully with gas & bullbar in good shape
suspension lift $900
wheels and tyres 2nd hand $1k for say 235/85/16 on disco rims
cargo barrier $500
snorkel $450
body lift $300
detroit $1k
true trac $1k
rear ARB bar and tyre carrier $300 (fleabay)
and just hope that nothing goes wrong with it  and thats about the budget gone.
if I can get some 2nd hand stuff then the bottom line is better but you dont see much 2nd hand stuff in Tassie and buying stuff sight unseen from the mainland and adding freight isnt really much cheaper/riskier

Another alternative can be
1988 Hiline with Maxxis 235/85/16, suspension lift with king springs and delphi shocks, truetrac at the back diff protector at front for $ 7500 ex Qld with tassie number plates ;)

Built my dunga for about $10K just over includig rego, etc..
Rangie, 88 dunga spec 5 speed- $850 (baragin I say)
Tyres- $2550 with 16x8 rims as well (33' MT/R's)
Suspension $770 (Dobinson springs and Pro-Comp shocks)
Flares- $600
ARB rear diff lock and hi-tough axles $2700 fitted
ARB winch bar and Tigerz 11 12,000lb winch $1000 (bar was 2nd hand)
New Century 700CCA battery $210
Radiator service and 2nd hand clutch fan $200
ARB rear step $150 (e-bay bargain)
UHF radio- $300
safety cert and 12 mths rego- $850
I also got some freebies with the Rangie in parts that I actually used (needed 2 tie rod ends and a couple of bushed, so $0 :D)
Close but just over but you can do it cheaper esp. tyres now that I have sold them, I was able to get nearly a new set for the money I got for the MT/R's (tyres have gone up substantially in recent times). They'res plenty of good second hand parts , accessories, etc.. on here and other forums so bargains are to be had, just have to be in the right place at the right time.

Oright this is my deal.
I got a 98 TDi Discovery (300) with 300,000 on the clock with full service history and had one owner and he drove it alone most the time up and down the cost for work. So the interior was great and it had never been off road! and due to the millage being on the highway things such as the box and clutch are in great order! Only cost me $6990
It came with a Safari snorkle, TJM winch bar, engine imob switch and dark tinted windows plus the camel trophy black bonnet. I then put in a UHF radio for free. And a 2" suspention lift (dobinson springs and lovelle shocks) $900 cut the gaurds and fitted 31" maxxis bighorns $1200 for a set of 5.
Leaves me about a grand.

ok, since Grover-98 started the non-RRC option, here's my $10k worth... :D
Don't get me wrong, I love the RRC (I've had a couple), but at $10k you are in P38A territory. I was happy to pick up this beast for around that figure:
1999 RR P38A 4.0 V8
HRA 2" lift plus EAS works great on road and off-road
Arnott Gen 3 air springs and extended Bilstein shocks
overall around 5" more travel than standard P38A (which is pretty impressive anyway)
33" Bighorns
ARB rear air locker (operated by EAS compressor)
4.1 diffs to compensate for big tyres
quick disconnect sway bars
HRA front bullbar
then added at no additional cost as I already had them from my "old" P38A:
rear bar and tyre carrier
GME UHF radio
IPF driving lights
headlight guards
DVD/iPod stereo replacement
stuff to do as budget and availability permits:
snorkel ($ ??)
rock sliders ($ ??)
diff and steering protection ($ ??)
FaultMate SV diagnostics unit ($1500)
smaller tyres for rego checks ($1000-$1500)
On the road it handles almost as well as a "normal" P38A except it sits a bit higher and the tyre noise level is greater.

Id say keep a eye on fleabay , car sites , papers , and the side of the road , as you will sure find some bargains out there , And if your lucky with a car of that vintage your looking for you will get a few extras with it as well ;)
I know where there is a 2 door RRC on gas dual long range sill tanks bullbar registered for $1500 in vic but your too late as a mate of mine is about to jump on it for $1000 offered :D
That would of been a good start for the project you want;)

thanks guys, all good ideas and suggestions.
If I am going to change, then I would only go for the RRC. I have had a disco and while it was nice, I have always had a soft spot for the classic rangie.
It wont be a daily driver so that makes things easier too. More of a weekend toy :D
Arthur, thats not a bad price but by the time I got it down here, it would be tad expensive for me as I have to keep mind the other extra's I want.
Will keep you in mind tho and maybe have a re-assess it when it arrives and maybe by then I wil have had a good look at others as well.

Hey MArk,
That '88 is going to be real cheap. You could do worse. I would offer sub 1K, and the rust issues are repairable. You are welcome to any body panels etc that I have lying about out the back. It has a good engine and LT77, with an LT230 still.
It'll leave you HEAPS of cash for some touring mods...:)

Rangies are advertised way overpriced these days IMHO. But here is my spin on this.
88 rangie - $2000 max (with rego :))
33" tyres of choice - $800 (S/H)
Cut guards and fit rubber flares - $150
2" springs - $200 (S/H)
Procomp shocks - $500
Arb lockers (F&R) - $2800
24 spline axles (rear) - $600 (for aftermarket)
Chromos axles & CVs (front) - $1000
Front and rear bar work - $400 (S/H)
Sliders - $500
Lightforce XGTs - $250 (S/H)
Traxide dual bat sys - $100
Traxide driving light combo - $150
Second battery $200
Misc stuff - $300
This leaves $50 (or more if you get the arb lockers second hand) for a carton of beer and some steaks to throw on the BBQ.
Cheers
Grimace
P.s. I could be way off in my costing and no doubt prob missed out a **** load of more important stuff, but I think its a good guide :)

which 88 RRC are you talking about JC?
Grimace, I like the way you think but try finding a 88 with rego for 2 gorilla's....thats the hard part :o buying and haggling parts is the easy bit. If you buy a 2 grand truck, it will probably cost you that in repairs over the next few years ;)
keep an eye out for me tho.

I remember when I was looking for a Rangie, justinc said to me: Arthur, look for a clean vehicle to start with, then slowly buid it up. You can never undo the wear and tear on a vehicle that have been treted hard ;).
I followed his advice and I am happy in having do it so.
Grimace believe that he can get a RR 88 for $ 2000. He is correct, I can get one for $ 1200, but how many repairs would the vehicle need compared to a RR which have been used as a famuily car inside Melbourne or Sydney and never been offroad?
There are plenty Discos 1997 as well for $ 5000 which worked hard and also are plenty Discos 1997 over $ 9000 which have been looked after and used on the citiy only.
I know which one I would select ;)

you are right Arthur. I dont want a dunga that is going to cost me an unknown fortune in repairs.
I want a nice town car that has been well treated and then I can modify it to suit my needs without worrying too much about spending big cash on running repairs. You always run the risk with a second hand car, but I think you better your chances when you buys something with a service record that has been looked after.

well I wont be doing that in my Rover!!!!
no James, the Rover is for far simpler ambitions....coffee alfresco, fine dining and setting the standard that one expects when in such a position.
There will be no frivolity or messing about, the Rover will be far more sophisticated than you my friend.

10 out of 10 mark welcome back to the L Rover train of thought.:D
I am more than impressed with ure Patrol, as stated b4 it has 2 diffs and two gear leavers, great start, but IT aint a Range rover Mate.:)
It will be great to see u behind the wheel of a Classic, Maybe we can look at buying one for spares together some time if u go down that road.
I will allways have room here for more Land Rover product.:-)

I have bought and wasted enough money on rangies, and have learnt to wait and buy stock, not modified peices of crap  :D:angel::wasntme:
If you wait long enough the right car will turn up. I still stand by my opinion that any stock (which is what you want) 88 rangie is only worth $2000.
Sorry if that offends any one.
Personally the only time I would pay more is if there was a receipt for the auto being overhauled recently. Or if it had a rover 4.6 or 5L Stroker motor
edit: and to totally contradict myself, I bought fluffy for $4g (1990) and have a tally of almost $30000 spent on mods, parts, repairs, fuel and rego and the damn thing is still stock , except for the tube front bar (none of the gear has been put onto her yet). :(

Rangies are worth as anyones is willing to pay at the end of the day. I agree with Grimace here, a decent 88 Rangie is only with a couple of grand unless you are getting a better than normal example.
E-bay is still the place to find bargains RRC's. They're was an 89 Vogue auto for sale in the sat Courier mail for $2.5K, sounds about right.

Firstly I would offer the 10,000 for a forward control I know about, but if he would not sell it, I would buy a 94 soft dash RRC--have seen these under $7000, and start to do it up with second hand gear from people wrecking a RRC.
I would put on springs with an inch or two spring lift, 31X10.5 inch tyres on sunraysia rims [I already have these sitting at home]. Would add a UHF radio, winch bull bar with winch [seen these second hand for $1500]. I might have enough left for a rear step bar, with swing out carrier. Thinking of buying one I know about for $400, its price. Would like front & rear lockers, but these would probably not be in my $10,000 budget.
I would do a home made stainless snorkel as shown in pictures in other posts [but would consider poly pipe that could be changed later for stainless, if I did not have enough of the ten grand left. I would make this snorkel my self]

My 89 RRC costed 2500 with New Tyres, Reco Engine, Rebuilt ZF, Fresh paint and well sorted electrics. Best value car I've ever owned in years. 1st drama I've had is tx valve in air con has blocked.
They do come up cheap in time. Just have to be in the right place at the right time.
Don't pay to much unless you need one quick.

as an example on what i have.....
1987 RRC, Auto, Dual fuel.
ARB lockers front and rear, Maxi and Jacmac axles.
bilsteins and big lift, caster corrected swivels.
ARB front and rear bar
High mount winch
Forgetting the interior mods, it owes me $4k registered and RWC.
OK its a bit of a pig, but add 2k for nice shiney paint and straight panels....
It was nice once....
