Insted of trying for the plant mech. go for the heavy vehicle, might be a little bit easery to find and do the plant side as an add on to your heavy vehicle course,
But its a bad time to be looking for a job, digger, and your age is against you as well dont matter how commetted you are, as an adult you get payed more money than a first year stright out of school and thats all the employers look at the bottom line
Good luck have you tried Williamstown RAAF base...Tenx are the civel contractors in the workshop out there I think

You still there?
I joined the Army in 1977 for three years on the 'yeah, you got the job' rubbish from the Army careers centre.
I wanted to be an Electronics Technician and was 'yeah, no dramas' into it and ended up as a storeman because I failed the Morse Code test, which was, at that time, a MANDITORY pass if you wanted to be a electronics technician.
Problem was, NOBODY told me about this little catch, and I was screwed up every conceivable orifice for the next 3 years!
I know how you feel!
But, there is no point in stressing about it!
You will survive and prosper!
My suggestion?
Broaden your horizons.
You are 22?

You are now an adult in the eyes of the education system!
You could start a Degree within a month if you want!
On the job front?
As you pointed out, adult apprentices (ie. over 21) are treated differently. Now that you are classed as an adult apprentice, you can attract a substantial subsidy from the Federal government as an incentive for someone to employ YOU!
Good luck!

Try a mob like Aust. Group Training in Stacey St. Bankstown, a lot of Companies will only take on apprentices through Groups like this, check your local DSS office there may be a Group Training mob in your area, good luck, Regards Frank.

What are you on about, there is no recourse that he can take to get a job with them if they have said he doesnt have one, digging his heels in will only cause them to say no next year if he want to try again (which I wouldnt).

I hate the group training centres down here, a kid says he wants to work outside, kid says builder/electritian/plumber and they send them to us on the golf course as a greens keeper.
Kid says he wants to do landscaping/greenskeeper they send him to 3 plumbers, 2 electricians and 5 builders before we get them.
As far as mature age apprentices goes, a lot of employers wont put you on because you already know too much and will in their eyes be a bit stuck in your ways.
I dont believe this is the case but in talking to mates that have tried it, they find that it hasnt been all that successful but then again, everyone is different but try explaining that to an employer in a CV is almost impossible.
I got my trade out of an apprenticship, I started one and thebusiness went bust and I was left hanging and ended up as a TA which let me be in the trade for 5 years and then I qualified to sit trade exams and go to trade school (at night) for 3 years to become qualified.
So maybe open your options and get in as a TA (trades assistant) which will then show the managers that you are capable and willing to learn and maybe they will endenture you into and apprenticship throught he back door.:D

A lot of employers are prejudiced against those who have done this and not served the prescribed perod as an indentured apprentice. Used to be called "Tradesman's Rights Certificate". Many would not employ them. I recall the Maintenance Manager at White Motor Corp quite forcefully telling the HR guy not to send him any more job seekers with tradesman's rights as he was not going to employ them. One ship repair firm in Brisbane I worked casual jobs for would only employ them as TA's. But times change. In the 60's employers were wary of tradesmen who had only served the then new four year indentures preferring those who had served the earlier five and (few) six year apprenticeships. Employers still don't like block release of apprentices to TAFe for their college training. As one said to me, "they go off to college for six weeks, and we work a nine day fortnight here, so two weeks after they return from college they are entitled to four days off. Seems like you never see the young b*gg*rs."

Yeah I have copped some flack from it in the past but even in a job interview once when I was said to be a cheat and I didnt really service my time I reminded hime that I spent 8 years on crap wages and learning my trade as well as not being able to sit at the back of the room and fall asleep like the day time trade school kids due to the smaller classes (8 to 12 people in a class) so the teachers knew you all personally.
You couldnt get away with having 1 clewy bloke in your group getting you through all your pracs as most of them were done solo.
This rang home with the fitter and turner that was hiring me yet I decided not to take the job even though it would have payed more than what im on now due to their crap attitude and that they were all lazy union types that were all just there for their pay cheque and I didnt want to become like them.

I didnt say that all unionists were lazy just those blokes were really bad, I wont do that because thats his job and I wont clean up that spill because thats the cleaners job and no I cant lift that length of steel because its a little greasy and it may slip out of my hand and brake my toe.
Thats what I mean, they were really bad.

Demarcation in large organisations can be a way of managing the work load and work force. Having everybody doing everything is not necessarily efficient. Can be quite ludicrous though, in some instances. At Garden Island, I (a fitter) could drill a hole up to 1/2" for an electrician to wire through. The sparky could not drill a hole but if he had a TA, the TA could drill a hole. Work that one out. Over 1/2" had to be drilled by a driller (boilermaker) and driller's mate (TA). The driller's mate carried the bag, passed the tools, and cleaned up afterwards. At another large machine shop in Sydney I briefly worked at, all machine tools had to be operated by "time served men", or tradesmen in other words. Even capstan and turret lathes and similar automatic and semi-automatic machines which were designed to be operated by unskilled/semi-skilled process workers. I gather this system came from Glascow and the Clyde. Both GI and this place were 100% union and as militant as all get out. Mind you, the management deserved what they got.
