From the RangeRovers.net forum, this blokes first post:

Today, I took a 1/2 day vacation from work to take my wife to a doctor apt. Simple enough...
WITHOUT any warning, as we were on an exit ramp from a highway, we smelled something like burning electrical.
The smell got REALLY bad in a matter of seconds. I pulled over to the side of the road and there was smoke billowing out from under the hood. We RAN from the vehicle as I noticed the right side of the hood (Bonnet-passenger side) that the paint was melting off the metal. In less than 1 minute the vehicle was TOTALLY engulfed in fire.
Vehicle was obviously a total loss. Definitely started near the main electrical box near the battery.

History: 2001 Range Rover HS. NOTHING wrong, everything working fine, NO indication whatsoever something like this
could happen. Up to this day, the vehicle has been one of the most reliable I have owned !

PLEASE: ALL of you. SELL your Range Rover's. We have never been so scared in all our lives. We could have died today !
PLEASE: For the safety of you and your loved ones. GET RID OF IT. I will NEVER purchase another Land Rover vehicle as long as I live.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE

Tim in Wisconsin, USA

He copped a bit of flak! :D

The only vehicle I have ever had catch fire on me was a '93 LandCruiser Troopie...

Admittedly, it was an Ambulance and so it had a lot of additionally wiring in it, much of it of questionable integrity...

Marshmallows anyone?

Think the main problem is that he is American/lives there.

Litigation society par excellence!

Got rear ended once by a Renault Espace whilst driving a Peugoet 309. Five minutes later the Renault was burning, completely gutted out.

Apparenty the Espace is renowned for bursting into flames after an accident. So sell your Renaults folks.

Chances are the same could be said for most mass car producers, so lets all go back to horses and carts! :D

if you google the words "jeep" and "fire" , you will get some interesting results as well. some of them were on the local (Aus) news recently.

Assuming we all just sold our combustible LRs wouldn't we just be signing someone else's death certificate?

Maybe we should have them all crushed?

I don't know what he's whining about I recently did a trip to Dwellingup and the exhaust bandage set fire and cooked my handbrake cable. Smells like hot cross buns. You see, I bet the yanks never designed nice smells into their components.

I am also led to believe that the us spec rangies had a self destruct feature if they were owned by complete morons.

In over fifty years of licenced driving I have only once had a car catch fire on me - a near new Ford Laser (we named it "Murphy" - if anything can go wrong it will). Didn't do much damage, but I did not know before this event that underbonnet insulation will burn! Still a mystery how it caught on fire, but I suspect a discarded cigarette bounced up through the gap between the engine and bumper, and airflow held it against the insulation. Nothing else was damaged except some paint on the bonnet.

I've had my 300tdi disco Catch on fire Travelling on the Bypass Road to Bamaga/seisia. apparently one of the Relays in the ignition cct was loose and Vibration from corrugation raod was causing current to trigger the starter motor with the engine on. starter motor eventually got so hot it caught fire . and I got towed by a Toyota landcruiser owner to seisia automotive for repaires. insurance paid for all repaire work as it was covered under fire damage.

In the mid 80',one of the company falcon panel vans we had caught fire under the dash.It was repaired under warranty,as it was fairly new,but the burnt smell lingered around for a fair while:(

A guy i new bought a second hand, about 15yrs old in those days,Jag XJ12,because he thought one day it would be worth big money:eek:

He got it real cheap.Anyway,it burnt to the ground, and having only third party/property insurance, withfire & theft, got his money back.

I had a minor fire just over a year ago. My LPG wasn't firing right and built up back to the air filter box. There was an almighty 'pop' followed by smoke. The air filter box caught fire but the actual filter (which you might think would go up a treat) remained unharmed.

My cheap $20 Bunnings fire extinguisher paid for itself that day.

BTW, my Kmart Fire extinguihser ran out of Puff , but my Fire Blanket came in very handy:). straight on top of the starter motor and it put it out.

Like the majority of our responses to the initial post, I would not be too inclined to go and sell my vehicle on the basis of poor old Tim of Wisconsin's pleading - assume it was not a hoax.

But I am also assuming that he and his wife got the greatest scare of their lives, and felt this was an appropriate way to react under the circumstances - perhaps prevent others being equally `imperiled' from their perspective. I have to respect that and accept it for what it is worth.

I have been involved with a few incidents involving (other peoples') cars and lpg stoves catching alight, and it really is pretty scary stuff when you realise it is happening - no matter how well equipped you are.

I guess Tim is not someone who might normally quietly reflect on what happened and how unlikely it is that history of that type might repeat itself.

Cheers,

One of the funniest conversations I ever heard was on HF radio, went something like this.
R/Train driver "My prime mover's on fire"
Mrs Owner in office "Quick, pull it out from under the trailers."
R/T driver "Yeah, I've already done that."
Mr Owner in ute "Put the ba@#%d (ba@#%d) back under quick"

Despite earlier suggesting that the guy might have been fairly rattled, still a bit bemused by the general tone of the responses to Tim in Wisconsins' unfortunate experience with his RR.

Guy and his missus are driving his pride of Solihull down a freeway and the damn thing goes up in flames. So, what does he expect?

Only Trabant and Lada owners could come close to this collective expression of blind loyalty?

Love em or leave em, warts, flames and all, they are still LRs.

Cheers,

Cheers,

we often say here, 'didn't happen without photos'; and in investigative journalism, we do source evidence lots of evidence,

this person has supplied none,
it is just hearsay and rumour...

if it happened, i'd like to see the evidence of such, and not just a pic of some burnt RR which could come from anywhere off the net,

if I was investigating,
i'd want to see the vehicle, the ownership, the insurance claim, and the
investigations as to why it burnt....

otherwise, its all bull.....

might just contact a pal up there about this and see what i can find....

Years ago when I was a park ranger in the NT I had just left Rainbow Valley where I had (among other things) cleaned the ash out of the fireplaces and put it into big steel bins on the back of the Toyota. Heading south on the Stuart Highway a hot wind-blown ember found its way into my swag. I finished up with a raging inferno in the back of the ute fanned by 100km/hr winds as I tore down the highway. I lost my swag and melted the esky.

As for cars catching fire I saw a friend's Ford Escort burst into flames, and I also watched a rented X-Trail burn to the ground. So if we're going to be crushing Range Rovers, all Escorts and X-Trails are going to have to go as well.

I'll add this to the "cars that catch on fire" blog.

The son's RAV 4 had a fire under the dashboard. The vehicle was saved only because the battery went flat before the flames really got under way - needed a lot of new wiring though.

I have had to help put out three VW Kombis.
Any vehicle can catch fire. It would give you one hell of a fright though. A member on here has had his D3 catch on fire. Turned out to be a rats nest next to the exhaust catching fire.
