Discussions about doing the CSR on return to Australia are going on. Yep we will do it in your winter months.

Have had a quick look at Oz explorer and see that they say fuel consumption for a 4 cylinder diesel is 309 litre for the 1961 km route. That equates to almost 16l/100km for the entire trip. My worst fuel consumption in last years trip was 17l/100km (across the Simpson after a sand storm) whilst my average over 40,000 km was 10.8l/100km

What fuel consumption would you expect for a 300TDi 110 on the CSR?

Is a 160l fuel capacity (standard 110 tank + wing tank +40l in jerry cans)sufficient to do the CSR without arranging a fuel drop?

What is minimum fuel capacity recommended for a 300Tdi 110 for the CSR?

Regards

Brendan

Can't help with the question Brenden, but when will you be here next?

I'll be touring the country from late June to the end of September this year.

All the guide books/reports I've ever seen have recommended a minimum of 300l + fuel drop. Availability of fuel these days I think has negated the old fuel dump at Well 23.

As I haven't done this run, others will give a better indication.

FWIW, on our Madigan Line trip last year, our trip out to Geosurveys Hill resulted in horendous consumption (Td5 Defender), so be prepared!!!

If you've averaged 17l/100km in the Simpson and your overall average is 10.8l/100km overall..... I really don't think that you'll be getting 8.16l/100km and assuming that you can extract every last drop of fuel and arrive bone dry with the tanks.

I'd be allowing for 17l/100lm + reserve + 20litres left in the tank.

I have averaged about 13ltrs for my Tdi through the simpson and surrounds but I would take slunnies advice and go 17.Which way are you going?,from the top down or bottom up?.Can I tag along for a couple of days?. Pat

Hi There,I did from Wiluna to well 23 fuel dump in 2000 and we averaged 15.5l in a 300tdi disco. It was fully loaded 3 people plus all our gear.I know you can get fuel at well 33 (aboringinal community) and there is also a community at the northern end that you can sometimes get fuel. I know the names and contact numbers will be on the explore oz website. So with your fuel range you shouldn,t need to arrange fuel at the fuel dump.I am planning to do the trip myself next year.Watch out for the corrigations.
Cheers and enjoy Ean

Always better to plan to arrive with some reserve in your tank rather than suffering the inconvenience and embarrassment of being 100 or do K's short of your destination.

If I recall correctly, they don't do a fuel drop any more. You need to get your fuel from one of the communities.

You also need to get a permit from the national 4wd council (http://www.anfwdc.asn.au/)

Brendan,

Shock absorbers, shock absorbers, shock absorbers. Be under NO illusions this is a very hard track on suspension. ESPECIALLY when loaded for the distance.

I know you have only just been out here, but this is probably a notch above the tracks you may have encountered both for its isolation and length. Being well prepared has never been more important.

(I'd love to come along though...:))

A friend spoke with capricorn roadhouse in newman and they will be doing the drop this year. The present quote was $500 per 200l drum but this will most proberly fluctuate weekly.

Thanks for your replies folks. Hopefully will be back in 2010.

Don't think I expressed myself clearly in my first post . I didn't think I could do the whole track on 160 litres. That would really be wishful thinking! :p

Really meant would 160 litres be sufficient to cover the individual sections i.e. distance between the start/communities/end of track. Hope that is a clear question.

The 110 will go back to Australia after a lot of TLC. Maintainence/Preparation is vital for a safe journey. Am looking forward to getting my 110 back

Be careful, that part of the desert is full of dead tourists.
Just make sure you bring enough money to pay for your own rescue........

:eek: Where does this come from??

Hi Brendan,

other options include fitting a 2nd wing tank (50-70litres depending on whether it's Right or Left), a rear quater panel tank (45 litres) and replacing the standard tank with a Long Range Tank (100 litre capacity).

On my Defender I have the Long range rear & quater panel tanks which give me 150 litres. If I added 2 wing tanks, that's another 120 litres.

Though I dare say that if you did this, your LRPV (Long Range Patrol Vehicle) would need a set of KONI Raids

There is a long range tank of 127l capacity (replaces main) and a sill tank of 80l (only 200 or 300Tdi) as the computer gear under the seat of Td5 gets in the way.

:eek: Where does this come from??

Do you know how many tourist try and drive from the Alice to broome in hire cars with only a bottle of water and a packet of bikky's??.I know of three X-trails,two Ravs and one Prado.I think there was 5 or 7 that died. Pat

I realise there are tourists who have died whilst travelling the outback, but this hardly constitutes a "desert full of dead tourists":o

The Canning Stock Route, compared to some desert routes, is a veritable highway, so with a properly prepared vehicle and crew, should pose no particular difficulties.

And this would seem to be why Leeds is asking these questions.;)

Numpty,
I have a 132L Long Ranger main fuel tank on my 110 300tdi. Is the 80L sill tank self fabricated? At 10L to 100Km ish combined tanks would be a long way. Or for the purpose of Leeds about 1200Km combined tanks at 17L/100, easy for trip planning.

Peter

Peter, the BIL has this 80l tank and it is a proprietary item purchased from ARB I believe.

I have a 70 litre RH sill tank but I can rarely get 70 l in it, usually somewhere between 60 and 65l.
It's made by LRA.
