View Full Version : D3 FUEL ECONOMY WHATS YOURS LIKE

Hi all,
I have a D2 td5 was wondering what the fuel economy is like on the 4.0 Ltr V6 petrol, TDV6 2.7 Ltr Diesel and the 4.4 Ltr V8 petrol. Have been looking at the prices falling and thinking about a change over. Would like some real world figures from people that have got them rather than the dealer or a mag thats only tested them for a week . I tow a camper so if you also tow and have some figures that would be greatly appreciated.
cheers and thanks in advance

In my V6 petrol, according to the trip computer:
City 14.6 l/100km
Hwy 10.6 l/100km
I do drive fast but I've had to re-learn acceleration/braking to bring the consumption down to something I can live with.

Trip computer, which is notoriously over optomistic to the tune of 1 litres per 100, on my TDV6 shows 8 litres per 100 doing 100. Around town, and I don't take it easy, is average 12.5 per 100.

I reckon you must be the best driver in Australia to get those figures from a petrol V6.
The combined fuel economy in the Green vehicle guide is
15.2 L per 100Kms.
In almost all cases the city economy is much worse than that.

As posted, that's from the trip computer and I agree with Forest that there's up to a 1L/100km error. Having said that I've checked the economy numerous times with actual consumption vs kms travelled and found it close enough.
I always run 98 octane, although that's been scarce here recently and a tank of 91 will raise the consumption by 2L/100km.
Can't stress enough the importance of a light foot on acceleration.

In the V8 I get 17 around town and an average 12-13 on a proper run. I can see single figures (just) sitting at 100 with the cruise control on.
With the V8 it seems important to have 98 octane. 96 is OK, but it adds 1-2KM around town and the car is noticeably slower. The wife put 92 in once (a whole tank full...) and the car was so slow I thought it was broken. I never checked the consumption, but I think it added 3-4 to it around town as I did tend to boot it a lot more.
I don't drive with economy in mind, so you should get as least the consumption that I do. I also spent a lot of time with the gearbox in sport mode.

In my 4.0L V6 I use around 17-18 around town and 11.5-12.5 on the highway sitting on 115 km/hr. Average sits between 15-16. I generally use 95 octane.

My '05 TDV6 consistently reads 10.4 around town (I'm a conservative driver), and on a recent Adelaide to Thredbo and return trip, with 4 adults and lots of luggage did 9.5 for the whole trip.
Pretty bloody good considering the alps terrain.
Three Adelaide/Melbourne return trips with two up has given 9.2 l/100 each time.
These figures from the trip computer...never tested actual consumption.

My long term average for the TDV6 is 11.95lt/100km over the 86,399 km.
Stats: 10,327 litres of diesel @ an average of $1.32 per litre (roughly $13,600 worth of diesel :o)

My D3 HSE TdV6 is 3 years old with 46k on the clock, and the economy has never been marvellous. I can get 9-10 l/100ks on the motorway at 100kph, but around town it averages around 13-14l/100ks, and sometime spikes to 17l/100k's. I live in a hilly area of Brisbane and I think with such a heavy body to haul around the hills do cause a significant reduction in fuel economy. It also doesn't pay to floor the accelerator too much, power needs to be feed in smoothly to avoid turbo lag especially from standstill. Having said that, I've heard the TdV6 is punchier than the petrol V6, and not far off the V8 (except off the line where the V8 is much quicker).

My 08 V6 trip computer typically shows around 14.5 to 15 l/100km. Mostly used for commuting around Perth at peak periods, so a fair amount of stop start driving, with a long trip (200 to 800km) at least once a month. The consumption on the long trips can drop as low as 10 l/100km.

On my daily run into work and back approx 80Km Highway 95 - 110Km/H and 20Km Canberra driving I have the following from my trip Computer.
No Bull Bar no Roof rack 9.5 L/100Km
ARB Winch Bar added 10.2 L/100Km
Wind Cheetah Roof Rack added. 10.5 L/100Km
On long trips at 100 Km/H I had got down as low as 8.0 L/100Km and with the roof rack fully loaded we still got less than 12l/100KM.

Hi All
I have just purchased a 2006 tdv6 s no trip meter but I have done 2 highway trips (plus approx 50 ks of city driving on each trip) to date to the same destination apart from small variation. The vehicle had two persons on board. no extra load. Refilling at the same pump (To 3 clicks of the auto cutoff) same service station after each trip the results so far are as follows
Trip 1 584 Ks 56 litres = 9.589
Trip 2 599 Ks 58.2 litres = 9.716
I used cruise control set at 100Ks per hour, it will be interesting to see if I can maintain this consistancey. Happy so far

When calculating fuel economy, don't use the display as it is at least 10% over-optomistic.
I have travelled nearly 100k in my MY06 TDV6 SE and I have never even got near to some the figures quoted.
I have done long highway (flat) trips at 100 kmh (checked with GPS) and with the AC off and have only cracked the 10l/100 kms just twice and only just. My worst for a tank is 25.90 l/100 kms. I have a detailed spreadsheet with all my fuel purchases and driving conditions from day one. I have averaged 11.75 l/ 100 kms. My average distance per tank is 618 kms with an average fill of 72.53 litres.
I don't drive the D3 agressively or excessively speed on the road (no speeding tickets in that time).
I would be interested in seeing another D3's full fuel useage history, not an odd tank here and there.

Interesting
Some-one has too much time on their hands me thinks.
So average fuel consumpyion is 10-12 l/100.
Enough said, move on, point taken, I get it, no more.

No.Tax reasons. The D3 was a novated lease and it was essential to known how the kms and costs were tracking otherwise a very large FBT bill.

Desert Traveller, I posted my long term usage (on page 2 of this thread) and I have achieved 11.95 lt/100km. This is calculated over the 86,000 km with each fill being full to the brim and recording each fill in a spreadsheet. I always considered my older D3 to be a bit uneconomical but I'd say maybe it's average. BTW I Have GG tyres fitted that also increased the fuel usage by around 0.5 lt/100km

Holy smokes Batman!! You guys have 98 octane? 92 is the BEST we can legally get our hands on. We put 98 in the airplanes. I average 13.8mpg consistently on the proper road trips. Now I want 98 - pffftt make that 102!!

Go for a diesel... you can get it boosted like Norto or WayneD
In excess of 540Nm if memory serves.
The V6 petrol has no grunt beyond pulling itself ....... the V8
requires an HSE purchase ...... lots of pieces(less than the USA)
to buy after warranty if you're unlucky.
You couldn't pay me to tow 10000km with a V6 petrol.
It's an engine option for those who don't want to get
stiffed for an HSE/V8 30 Grand (they must be kidding,
look at the Yanky prices ! ) markup... Aussie ripoff.

I'm sure some Fl. D3 guys use 98 ...... isn't 95 the minimum
Jag. recommend for your engine ?

I think that there are different scales on octane around the world. Some are RON, some are MON, etc.
I used 100 Octane in Japan as the regular high octane fuel, but I also remember reading that this was only the same as the Australian 98 due to different measurement techniques.
In fact, a quick google reveals the following: Octane rating - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating)
In most countries (including all of Europe and Australia) the "headline" octane rating, shown on the pump, is the RON, but in the United States, Canada and some other countries the headline number is the average of the RON and the MON, sometimes called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI), Road Octane Number (RdON), Pump Octane Number (PON), or (R+M)/2. Because of the 8 to 10 point difference noted above, the octane rating shown in the United States is 4 to 5 points lower than the same fuel elsewhere: 87 octane fuel, the "regular" gasoline in the US and Canada, is 91–92 in Europe. However most European pumps deliver 95 (RON) as "unleaded", equivalent to 90–91 US (R+M)/2, and some even deliver 98 (RON), 100 (RON), or 102 (RON).[2]
So whilst your 92 may not be as good as the 98 we can get in many places, it is not far of the 96 which LR recommend.
Cheers, Steve

Interesting post Steve .
I remember 87 minimum being painted on US Army Jeeps
at Burtonwood, as a child in the early sixties.
This I now realise , was standard petrol for them.

Sadly I have to agree. To pull out to pass at 100k in the V6 takes a long stretch of clear road. I wouldn't consider the V6 for any sort of towing duty, except for maybe a tinnie, and only locally at that.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Keep them coming. The v6 in the classifieds looks like being the cheaper option , But if it is no good for towing then i'll look at the td or v8 i have noticed some early model v8 HSE's going in the 40 grand range . For me the vehicle spends most of the time in the shed (not my daily driver ) so a little thirstier is't a big problem and i do like the HSE appointments over the SE . A HSE TDV6 would be ideal if at the right price might have to wait a little longer for price drops see how it goes never know.

I was surprised on a trip back from somewhere when Tim was following me in his TDV6. An overtaking lane appeared and we were stuck behind something slow. I floored it in the V8 to overtake and he kept up remarkably well.
That isn't a scientific test, but it does show that there is more get up and go in the diseasel than you might expect. I don't think that Tim has changed his chip or anything.

Have a look at the overlander tow test if you interested in towing...for my money it would be the TDV6 for my 2 tonn boat. My 02 V8 5 speed Manual (this makes a big difference in series 1 and 2 vehicles for towing) tows the Vagabond well but I have no doubt that the TDV6 would be better again....I know I know...can believe im actually saying that and i have yet to drive one, but the specs are impressive and all the tow tests with the TDV6 are amazing in the mags..

Mine used to be really good. I got as low as 8l/100km once.
It's now around 12.5l-13.5l/100km but I still have the roof rack on, which I will finally remove after easter ( and two years of saying "I'll remove it next weeked").
I've noticed a marginal improvement since remapping and EGRing.

Just had a software upgrade for the turbo vanes and the transmission. Around town economy has gone from 14.5 L/100km to 12.3 L/100km.
Pick up at low revs is better and gear changes smoother.:BigThumb:

Only had the D3 TDV6 a 6 months but getting around 9.2 on the highway and 11.5 around town.
Towing the van around 14.5 on the highway.
Did find over Christmas when towing was using 16 +, as found a turbo boost hose leak.
Had all the bells and whistles going off & had to reset the computer to get home, along with heaps of black smoke out the back.
$500.00 later all good.
Cant believe how much power the Diesel throws out and fantastic when overtaking.
