Who has installed a temp guage of the auto on their Range Rover? If you have where did you install the sender and what sort of temp does it run at normally?
I was hoping their was a place for a screw in sender but I am thinking you might have to use an inline one.
I was also just going to use a speco oil temp guage like I have for th engine oil temp but I was not sure of the running temp.
Any other help or suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks,
Adam

Not a rangie but mine is welded into the sump. First one was next to the drain plug. New sump has it in the flat side at the front. I haven't got the box above 50 deg since the rebuilt yet. Old one wis farenheight. I bought an actaul gearbox oil temp guage.

Same. I silver soldered a brass fitting into the front of the sump next to the return line. temps get hot when towing and now gearbox is kaput...

Ok. But does anyone have any other method. I would rather not remove the crossmember again to remove the sump. I still have to run the hoses up to a custom oil cooler on the back of the ute so I was hoping to be able to get an inline sender.

silver solder a tee piece into the line and fit where you like. Preferable to use hot line.....from high side of oil pump.

Thanks. I'll do that

x2.
I guess the clue is that the standard temp switch on a RRC is in the circuit before the cooler.

IIRC somebody on this forum was using one of the TM2 temperature gauges to monitor their auto.
Its a bolt on sensor so no need to break into the oil system - just monitor the temp of the case itself.

Thanks Steve, but I would prefer to monitor the actual oil temp. The auto will be behind a 4.6 and pushing 35" tyres, mostly offroad so I reckon monitoring the oil temp ill be pretty important.
I will also be running the oil cooler at the back of the cab (ute) with a thermo fan so I will want to know if the thermo fan stps working for any reason.

Does the trans have a dipstick? VDO made a temp gauge for this purpose. The sender was in the form of a dipstick and was slipped down the tube.

Now that sounds like a good idea. I will look into it.

There is a temp switch at the bottom of the radiator on the auto lines to the radiator hot side. You can remove the original switch and fit a sender unit, but you may need to adapt the threads. Cant remember what size it is off the top of my head. Be careful what sender you put in or try to match up one that matches the profile of the switch or you run the risk of blocking the flow if its too big.

Thanks but original oil cooler has been thrown out but I dont remember any temp switch being their. But it will be al custom hoses s the cooler will be on the bck of the Rangie (ute).
Also, the auto does not run at 200psi, it runs a fair bit lower than that. I always thought it was very high pressure, but even the electronic HP24 only runs at max 150psi when locked up.
My existing transmision lines have the flexible hose held onto the steel pipe with just hose clamps, so from that am guessing pressure is fairly low.

4HP22 runs at nominal test pressure of 150psi @ 2000rpm. Was close, but even this is too high for silver solder.
The original oil cooler is in the radiator tank, not separate. This then feeds into the external oil cooler tube mounted on the front.
The external cooler doesnt have the ability to sufficiently cool the fluid being air to liquid, so it goes into the radiator first to remove most of the latent heat.
It may be a year thing as to whether you have the temp switch in line to the radiator, but AFAIR all ZF fitted Rangies had this setup.
