Hey guys...

just a couple of quick questions...

I'm looking at either gettin a newer fuel injected 3.5lt enginge or just the parts, (ie.. manifold computer etc etc ).. and putting it on my 85 county..

Swapping the parts over or changing the engine, i'm fine with, but when it comes to the wiring side of things i havent had alot to do with....

If i can get a complete wiring loom, is there much i will have to do wiring it into any existing electrics on my county?

any help or advice would be appreciated...

There are actually a few items you may need to consider. The EFI vehicles had a submerged fuel pump with a full flow fuel return, where most if not all the carby V8's had external fuel pumps (or at least that was my RRc - carb->EFI conversion). The fuel flow is controlled by the throttle position sensor so you need the right fuel pump and return line. I ended up getting a long range tank with the submerged pump during the conversion which solved the pump and return line issues.

As long as you get the complete engine harness all the way back to the ECU along with the other bits like the MAS your biggest problem is going to be mounting the extra bits.

Ha mate how u going, I have a 85 v8 county as well, but if i were going to do it i would put another engine in say a 4lt or 4.6 with the whole loom and computer that way you are going to get a good power increase for your money and you can sit it on the floor and work out what you need then pull the old one out fit the new one as quick as possible. With your carby one what is your fuel consumption, I have only had mine on the road since christmas and it has been around 25lt per 100km, but my ignition system has been playing up I have just finished puting a MSD 6AL module in, it feels better just need to watch this tank and see how much difference it makes. please let us know your consumption.

i've put a 3.9 efi into my county and the biggest problem we had was getting the wiring sorted.
mounting of all the bits is pretty easy as theres a ton of room. you can leave the return fuel lines as is, but you'll need to change the supply lines and like lot's a landies has said an efi pump.
it's also easier if you swap around the position of the p/s resevoir and get a steering box off a later disco - you can then use the disco p/s pipes. you'll also need to do a bit of fiddling around with the bottom rad hose.

Well, I just bought the engine..... 3,5 efi.. only done 120 thou.. its out of a 94 model disco...

Comes with complete engine.. computer, loom etc etc.....

Thanks for the advice on the fuel pump..... didn't even think of that side of things..:(..

Does anyone know whether the standard county tank can still be used to put in a efi fuel pump, or would i have to get a later model tank.????

Thanks guys...

Mikey

yep tank can stay the same

An external high pressure pump, with surge tank and low pressure lift pump of course:D

Looms on these are reletively straight forward, they interface via 1 plug, so easy to sort;)

EFI operates @ 30-40psi, carb fuel pumps fill at 5-7ish psi

Something I googled

The fuel flow is controlled by the throttle position sensor so you need the right fuel pump and return line. .

The pump is almost irrelevant in regards to the TPS, so long as it pumps up the the fuel pressure regulator, that all it has to do, also fuel is controlled, via TPS (throttle position sensor) MAF(Mass airflow) or MAP(Manifold absolute pressure) sensors, coolant temp sensor, sometimes O2 (not in this case), but the pump merely supplies a common rail, via a regulator

Thanks for the help mate.... all making a bit more sense now...

I picked up th engine today and just got it home in the garage.. Did a cold compresion test before i took hold of it and was reading 120psi on each pot..

Before i even touch my county, i'll replace all the gaskets and mabey have a good look inside it just to make sure nothing is gonna die on me after i do the swap... ( should be ok.. engine was an import from japan, only 119k on the clock)

Should i look at replacing the timing chain while its out or just leave it as is?

It came with the full wiring loom, and looks pretty simple except for a couple of wires and plugs which i'm not sure about... ( there right near the plug for the computer so i'm assuming it may be for dash lights etc etc for the disco it came off..????

Cheers..

ps... bear with me guys, there might be a few more questions to come:D

Well, i couldn't wait till the end of march, so i just went hell for leather and did it:)

Last thursday afternoon, i got the old engine out.. all went pretty well, only took around 2hrs and a couple of naughty words.

Friday arv, put all new gaskets in the new engine and bolted up the power steering, alternator, pulleys, throwout bearing and exhaust manifolds.

Saturday morning, cleaned the engine bay out a little, drilled a hole in the firewall for the loom and dropped the donk in..

All i have left to do is try to figure out the wiring side of things and run fuel lines and fit the efi pump...

Here is a couple of pics along the way:D
