Very good capture, the bird is part of a very good composition. I like the light in one side of the image.
I would experimenting on a pano composition cropping a bit on the top and the sand on the LHS and see what it is the result.
The exposure is spot on, a fraction of a second more open and the image will be burned

This is a repost. All I've done to it is rotate it so the horizon is reasonably level as the pic was taken from the back of a camel. I was hoping that the sailing vessel in the background would be across the sun as the camels went past but it was not to be. Cable Beach, Broome, of course.

I forgot about PS 7, I have CS3 but give it a try
Go to the tools and click on the eyedropper tool.
In CS3 a drop menu with a selection of tools will be open,
Have a look if you have the ruler tool.
Select it and run a line along the horizon
Go to image, rotate canvas and select arbitrary. Photoshop will tell you exactly how much is out of horizon the image.
An is done.
In the case of the camel image she is 0.25 CCW :)

You welcome Ron, if you have the image in raw convert it to tiff and then go to curves, linear contrast and use the default settings.
You are going to see that the contrast in the image will improve a lot.
With the luck of pixels and information on the jpg image the results will not be the same.
Cheers
dmdigital
15th February 2009, 09:21 PM
If that doesn't work in PS7, create a new layer and select the line tool, draw a straight line across the horizon, now go to edit>transform and rotate the image so that it all looks straight. Then delete the layer with the line in it.

Work in raw and save in raw and tiff. Only convert to jpg after finish the pp and for internet only.
For the internet save the files in sRGB profile ( looks heaps better) but work on Adobe RGB ( more colors in the palette ;)

Also sunrises are very hard because "the window of light" is much shorter than the one in the sunsets.
I do not use filters so genarally I have about 3 minutes of time to take all the shots before the sun can "burn" a hole in the image.

Thank you for your comments
I think that there are very few beaches with the sand characteristics of this beach.
There trillions of very small shell particles which combined with the dark sand produce this effect at low tide and that right light angle.
This characteristic help me to capture some very nice foregrounds without rocks making interesting photos.

No I do not use GND filters wich can be very handy for this type of photography.
For that reason the window of light that I have to take thiese shots is very short.
I am contemplating importing some Sing-Ray GND filters in the future .
The problem is that a set of 3 diferent stops are required.....about $ 1200+ :(

What an awesome set of images, I started a multi quote but by the time I got to the end I just thought it'd be easier to just congratulate everyone.
Here's one i had in my computer. It was taken off the top of Cambridge plateau which is S/W of Kyogle. This was the tail end of a storm that ripped through the valley and left a path of destruction in it's wake on 29 Dec 08.
My lense was playing up and only random photo's worked. This was one of them:

Thanks for the compliment - it is currently my wallpaper. I had a great evening there. We had fish and chips with some friends, the weather was excellent, the kids could run on the sand safely and I was able to wander up and down taking pictures.
I had to stalk that pelican for about 5 minutes to get the framing I wanted! He was very tame and let me approach, but wasn't interested in being gently shepherded to where I wanted him to go.

Here is one that I took last month out of the office window about 30 miles north of Derby, WA.
I got airbourne out of Broome just before sunrise and proceeded to watch the most awesome sunrise from both below the cloudbase, and then again from above it.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/02/381.jpg
The next two were taken at a place called Marella Gourge, a few hours drive east of Halls Creek.

Exif.
The lens was 18mm, F/14 (max was 3.6) and exposure was 1/10 with pattern metering and at and ISO setting of 320. It was edited last with Google Picasa. It was taken at 19:00 on 11/02/08
And unless it has been reset I'm guessing this was the 42nd photo taken with the camera.
Save the photo to your PC then right click on the file and choose properties then details.

dullbird, Thanks for the compliment. There is a lot of nice sceenery up here in the Kimberly and some wonderfull sunset during the wet season.
Bushie was correct I have a D80 with a 18-200mm VR lens and settings were as 300+ said, although it was the 42nd shot on that day.
I ended up taking over 200 shots over a two day camping trip, and got those two good ones, but I think that they were worth it.

Exactly why she got a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS3 for Christmas  (she's now 12).
One of the best things I ever bought both kids was a digital camera each. On our various trips they have both gone nuts taking hundreds and hundreds of pictures - It's quite amazing what things inspire kids..
So much better than my first Kodak when I was a kid.... 12 photos then wait a week to get the blurry prints back

The camera is only part of the equipment and the flair by the photographer is more important to achieve good shot.
You composed the images very well, only streched the capabilities of the equipment in trying to shoot directly to the sun.

I've had a closer look at the pic and the lens is definitely filthy. You can see some of the same spots in most of the photos.

It could be a silly idea for a thread, but hopefully not!
As I'm an early riser every morning, 4:30, I have a special affinity for sunrises (at the beach).
Best light to shoot in is usually early morning, or late afternoon where different hues can play upon our images.
So, post your pics of any sunrises, any sunsets.
Prefer you share your EXIF (if not already included in the image), as long as you don't mind.
I'll start with two, the first which was taken from a certain vantage point up Northern NSW whilst on a trip in October 2009.
I chose this one purely because the setting sun (which I rarely get a chance to capture) was nestling itself slowly behind a peak in the distance.
Second, is at my local surf break, one of those mornings where the "reflections" shone through.
Look forward to seeing your pics.

It's getting closer to sunrise photo time again. I think the best ones are in the colder months. Plus I can stay in bed longer.

Well, once motivated I set my alarm and off to the beach a bit before 0600. Always heaps of parking and the beach to yourself, especially in chilly June. Except this time...... Street was packed! Heck, must be good surf I thought. Nup, part way down the cliff to my favorite quiet beach I spotted a heap of tiny bobbing lights all clustered about the prime positions on the rocks. Photographers, a swarm of them
Turned out it was a workshop for taking seascape photos. Anyway managed to get some elbow room and had a chat with a few of them.
Temperature about 10 deg, light winds, tide most of the way in and rising and sizable swell making life interesting. This beach can change from week to week and this time most of the sand had been washed away leaving many of the rocks exposed.
Here's a couple of the shots-

Lack of rocks could be a problem. Lucky most of the Sydney beaches have plenty. Other problems need to be considered here. Ticketed parking, photography workshops :p and overhead lighting are some. Many beaches with swiming pools have dirty big lights lighting them up for the early morning swimmers. Really messes with your colour balance....

Hi Derek, no HDR on these. Used a 3 stop hard step Grad ND filter and some levels/color balance layer magic in Photoshop to bring up the detail in the water.
Second shot was taken just after sunrise but the cloud layer held the light back. Usually pack up once the sun's up.

Thanks David, second one really has that HDR type feel to it (if that makes sense). You did better than me, I woke before sunrise yesterday looking out at a beautiful spot, only to slowly watch the sky go from black to grey clouds. Sunrises aren't a big thing up here, sunsets are much better.
How are you finding CS5? I find it a big step up on CS3 (I skipped CS4), I'm very happy so far and it also seems quicker.
Chucaro
14th June 2010, 03:45 PM
Regarding PS I am not happy how it process the Nef files (Nikon).
The diference between the images processed by NX2 and the Adobe software is abismal!
I just read that the version 3 of Lightroom it is much better than the other Adobe software for nef files but I cannot justify expending over $ 300 for a software that does not read the nef files properly.
I guess that the only solution it is opening the files with NX2, save them in Tiff and then do any PP in Adobe if PS is the prefered software. :(
If that it is the case IMO PSCS3 is good enough.
dmdigital
14th June 2010, 04:18 PM
Arthur, CS5 and LR3 both use ACR 6.1 so there is really no difference how they handle the NEF. I agree that NX2 is better though as is Aperture3. That said there are a number of things CS5 does that the others cannot.
My workflow is really Aperture3 which I have setup with NX2 as the external editor. In NX2 I then have CS5 as the external editor. However in some cases I will simply work off the the NEF in either of these - e.g. when doing a panorama I'll just load the NEF's into PS - and then import back to Aperture's library.
I had a need to get CS5 otherwise I would have stayed with CS3 even though it can't handle D3s NEF's as it wasn't a big issue.

I skipped CS4 too and went to CS5. Still got heaps of learning. Actually did the RAW conversion with Bibble to see what it could do. My preferred NEF RAW converter is Nikon NX.

Not really sure. PS5 is pretty amazing. I've never really converted my NEF's in photoshop though. I usually use Bibble for quick and dirty conversions and Nikon NX for things I want to spend more time on.
We did some tests last year sometime and found there was a huge difference between NX and Photoshop's RAW converter. Trying to remember the details. I think it was to do with the converter taking into account the Nikon picture controls.

For Nikon users I think that there is not an option but to use NX2 for opening the nef files and then save them in Tif especially if they are landscaping images using the 14bit option.
I asked about PS just to use it for PP the tif images and do the print ready PP work.

It is actually a composite image, I just thought I would throw it up for discussion, neither of the original images were particularly brilliant, but I was making a DVD cover for our Madigan trip in 2008.
It's probably suffered a bit as well due to the resizing/compression and then posting to photobucket.
However I suppose that it shows even with my crude photoshop skills what could potentially be achieved.

I was expecting the foreground to be very dark as its a sunset image. Doing these types of PP work (like HDR) are hard because the brain is not easily fooled. I did a similar thing with a rock feature, took an underexposed and overexposed shot and merged the sky with the rock... still didnt look right even tho the images merged nicely.
Chucaro
21st June 2010, 04:02 PM
It is possible to have a vertical pano of tow images exposed diferent to have a clear and light FG and then stich a sunset from another image.
The problem is that the reflection of the natural light in the sky have to match the one in the FG or lowe image.
About 2 years ago having nothing to do I selected this 2 images and in PP with lots of filters I added the red reflection from the sky on the water.
It is not easy because also with curves the mood of the sky have to be added to the sea.
Back then with my basic knowledge of PP I come with this image.
This was my last, I do not like this type of work or HRD.

Normally just use my Nikon D80 & 18-200mm Lens, no filters, just shot 3x exposure's and make HDR's :)

Ahhhh, yes the mighty HDR!! I got the D80 too, no wide lens at the mo tho! Very nice work on the HDR's, you got them down pat  - even fools the minds eye which is very diffuclt as they tend to look really fake!

I do basic settings in Photomatix and finish it off in lightroom.
Got to get back into it next month :)

The Ol' Sunrise/Sunset shot thread is really starting heat up. Getting really edgy now people. Keep that stunning work up.

D3 I think the other one you have of the pier is far better (IMG_0063 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/48686896@N03/4737318295/)).
This one looks at least 2 stops underexposed plus the angle is not as interesting.
just some cc feel free to ingnore.

Sort of, but not really, they blend too much. Wished the birds hadn't flown so low to the water. :(
