View Full Version : Damn dust..... Snorkel Pre Filters on Defender?

Ok - I live on a dirt road - it's only 5 ks long - but this year the dust has increased beyond belief. I'm blocking air filters after only 30-40 trips on this road, particularly if I'm following someone.

I have a snorkel on the TD5 but that does not really help, my PUMA has no snorkel and sucks it's air from the wing.

So has anyone dealt with this sort of dust issue, are there any pre filters that can be fitted to snorkels that work at 60k's? I've seen the Donaldson's pre filters but those appear to be designed for agricultural and slow moving vehicles, and apparently above a certain speed the filtering effect is lost ,and it dumps straight down the chute. Anyone experienced this?

I use a Donaldson pre-cleaner on my TD5 D2 when the dust is bad enough. I've read about it not working at higher speeds but have evidence that it still collects dust. I don't use it all the time due to the extra noise and I suspect it might increase fuel consumption at higher speeds/engine loads.

i had one on my last 300tdi and found it actually improved the performance of the vehicle. made less noise than the usual snorkel head as well...

was still on it when i sold it..

I use a donaldson pre cleaner for desert trips (or if I think it going to be dusty)

Last trip it certainly collected plenty of dust/sand and if the fuel consumption was higher, it wasn't enough to worry about.

I would normally get ~10.5 normal running around.

We used pre-cleaners and droopies (snorkel socks) on our Simpson - Central Aus Trip. The Droopies collected way more dust than the precleaner did, and the airfilter in the Defender didn't need changing / cleaning. The Droopies are about $40 for a set of 3, they're like a Finer Filter type of foam sock.

There is a precleaner advailible with looks like a normal donaldson one , but is very different inside.
It works by a spining arm or blades inside on ballbearings driven by the engines inlet air flow through the precleaner.
The spining effect of the internal parts throws out most of the dust down and out side of the unit so there is no cleaning needed.
Cummins Aust used to sell them.
I have seen these units work in the worse conditions with industrail vehicles.
These things are fantastic, but do have some draw backs.
Price
Must be size matched to your engine
They make a spining sound for a minute or two after you turn off the vehicle while they wind down.
I think the brand used to be called SK, but I cannot find any reference to that name and this site may be the lastest version of the design.

I would try the Donaldson brand.
Among their products they have the Donaldson Topspin
Look at their catalogue HERE (http://www.odms.net.au/files/organise/donaldsonfilters/product_file_attachment/Donaldson%20Topspin%20Pre-cleaner%20-%20F111107.pdf)

Also in their home page HERE (http://www.donaldsonfilters.com.au/engine-exhaust/air-filtration/sub16cat16)
you will find a section called Air System Accessories wher a range of intereting products are available.

I hope that this ifo helping you

Cheers

My vote is for the snorkel socks as well. Used them on the Cape and other offroad work

Thinking outside of the square - I know of guys that use the 'pantyhose' type anklets that women buy from supermarkets over the head of their snorkel......

I'd slip something like this on when you need a bit of extra protection..

It'd be a Nelson/Fleetguard if Cummins sold it.

Is there any member that fitted the Donaldson Topspin?
They work very well on the John Deere tractors

Unifilter Australia Foam Air Filters for Economy and Performance (http://www.uniflow.com.au/)

click "products", then "4x4 pre-cleaners".

They have the droopy sock type and a slip over cover.

I've got a Donaldson pre-cleaner on my 300 tdi Disco that I leave on all the time. Always seems to be collecting dirt, bugs etc. In the rain it takes the water out of the incoming air....

What it is the required air flow range for the Tdi300 2.5 to 5.7 cm3/minute ?
Air filtration is important and the flow cannot be restricted therefore the selection of the proper prefilter is important.
Just wonder Unifilter how technical are with this compared with Donaldson?

This is the donaldson set up on my V8 county, no dust probs at all , its got the standard 110 V8 filter set up under the bonnet modded to suit 3,9efi .
The r/h one is for the aircon . :)

G'day Gents,

I have a Donaldson full cleaner on my GQ patrol, and it is awesome. No loss of power or noise, just loss of engine bay for second battery.

Did the Simmo no problems with it.

Cheers,

Just been looking at the Donaldson website & it raised the question, what sort of CFM are we looking it in a typical 4x4 diesel engine of say 2.5-3.0 litres?

you could try just turning the snorkel head backwards.
you still get enough air but not as much crap rammed down the tube

Yes, but it doesn't look right does it? :)
I always think it looks like some spotty teenager with his baseball cap on back to front. :p
