Contemplating going to a D3, Does the genuine raised air intake (snorkel) offer an advantages / disadvantages over after market models (for TDV6)?
Recall seeing some comment that genuine is not fully sealed?

the genuine parts item isnt watertight, it all depends on what you indend on doing with your D3

Intention for snorkel to be a security blanket in case I stuff up crossing creek i.e. find a hole!, If it is not water tight then that appears to defeat the purpose.

Get the Safari, which can also take a Donaldson aircleaner. The LR version can be made waterproof. Search disco3.co.uk for details. There are two parts from the Safari kit that could be added to the LR RAI, but unless you already have the RAI just get the Safari.

Hi Robert,
i have searched the disco3 site re this but i am still unclear as to how to make a LR rai water proof; does it just entail using the safari elbow and piping instead of the lr ones?
Cheers,
Peter

Yes, or you can seal up the LR elbow (the part with all the holes in it) and make a seal from the LR pipe to the RAI body.

Gordon, would there be any perfomance advantages / disadvantages with the LR raised air intake?

Do you mean with respect to the Safari one, or with respect to the original intake?

I heard the other day that Ritters have a conversion kit to make the original LR RAI more waterproof.
Not sure of price.

I never really noticed a difference on the D3's (and I've had both), but the Safari seemed a little noisier. I was suspicious of the Safari's effect on my fuel consumption, but I could never really pin it down to the snorkel alone, as I'd modified quite a few other things by then.

It seems that I need to be interested in this topic as my air filter element was very dirty at 45K, so the external air vent still manages to allow plenty of dust to be ingested. I fitted a snorkel to my D2 because of the dust.

That's the reason I initially fitted mine- went through 2 air filters in 6mths/20 000km!

And yet LR reckons in normal circumstances the air filter will go 72,000km and in arduous conditions 24,000km - wishful thinking I think.

I've been slack, not having checked the D4's filter at all. My D2's got clogged enough to seriously affect fuel consumption after 10K but its intake was from the inner guard. I'll check this one in 10K, as long as I remember!

Its in my maintenance schedule now, not that there's any guarantee that it will be looked at like a lot of other equipment maintenance.

How is the mudguard air grille removed? Gauging by the dirt in the tube, it looks as though dirt is being drawn from where the tube joins behind the grille and if so, I'll seal that for starters.

If you mean the decorative grill that sort of fills the air intake hole in the side of the fender, it seems the "approved" technique is to stand with your back to it, then put both hands behind your back, grab the grill louvers with your fingers and pull upwards and tip out from the bottom.
That "back to the grill" position seems to put an even pressure on the plastic and the louvre justs moves up a bit and tips out from the bottom.

Thanks bbyer. That'll save me breaking off retaining tabs at least.

I just remembered you have the D4.
My back to the fender technique is for a D3; the D4 may be different, doubt it but ....

Question for the knowledgable. I am looking at LR RAI for 09 SE Petrol. Dealer has advised that the standard tubing from grill to filter is not perforated. If this is the case then I should be able to just apply the external intake part, is that right?
I know that there is a work around with the RAI tubing where it can be sealed, when the perforated version is installed.
Cheers
