Looking to upgrade the tyres on the existing rim (7x16) to Mud Terrain, need advise on:

1). size, with the view of improving clearance, based on the existing rim.
2). brand vs value

Am thinking Maxxis Big Horn, 265/75/16 - will it fit on the existing rim?

Any insight is appreciate..

Hi 265/75/16 will be around the same rolling diameter as your standard 235/85 tyres you are already running. If you wanted to keep the original rims but get your extra clearance you will need to go to a 255/85/16 size. The only makes that do them are BF Muddies and Bighorns., I fitted the 255 bighorns two months ago for around $270 each and I am very happy with them. They seem to be good on the road, a little noisier than any A/T tyre on the market and brilliant in the rough stuff. The 255 tyre gives you around a 33inch diameter tyre.

cheers matt

here's a pic of the bighorns on my deefer

We just fitted 255/85 Bighorns to Tulip's defender, best value for money M/T around I reckon :)

thanks for the great feedback... and wonder if there are any insurance implications/caveats you are aware of when fitted with 255's?

Fitted BFG 255/85R16 MT's (older pattern) last month and love em...but they were pricier at 350 beer tokens each.

Have since travelled 4000k's on tar and dirt. They were recommended by JC in Tassie.

Awesome tyre.
