Hi,
i got my first land rover a couple of weeks back, a 1986 County (3.5l V8 petrol and gas). Anyway it doesnt have a car jack, and just wondering what ppl have done in this situation and where they have gotten them from (new or secondhand, land rover or other brand). Im in perth so any help would be appreciated.
Cheers

my personal favorite jack for ALL landrovers is the red rover jack as per the D1 standard issue.

any jack that is about the same height and has a telescoping piston will do nicely.

be carefull tho, some of the blue ones that come from super cheap are great for changing a tyre thats still up but if the tyre is flat may not fit under the axle.

A couple of decent wooden blocks (say 300x300x50+) will let you drive the tyre up high enough to sort that problem out. (and you should have a base plate anyway)

I carry a high lift jack on my County, but only for off road use. They can be handy if you have to repair springs etc or where you need a higher lift than usual.
For everyday stuff like changing tyres etc, a good hydraulic bottle jack that goes under the axles is practical and doesn't take up much room to store in the vehicle.

Yes indeed.

Having tried the bluey with a flat the other way is to drive onto the spare... jack it up, remove the flat and then put the spare on.

My red one had a heamorrage. They can be fixed though.

:D

Yes! That post saved the red one from being relegated to the scrap metal pile.

Must get around to doing that when the shed is cleared of household excess so that I can get to the bench.

i hate to say it, but, i have and really like the one i got from a toyota:eek: very simple design, no oil to worrie about, it works via gears and was really easy to wind up and down. it also went twice the height of the old disco one.
i cant remember its capacity but if its for toyotas it should lift heaps;)

cheers phil

toyota screw bottle jack.

great till it gets muddy or sandy or you want it to reliabley lift more than 500kg.

if you want to use it under the rear axle of a fully loaded 1 tonner toyota you have to unload it first.

i never had any problems with it at all! when i got it it needed some grease, so i had to drill out the spot welds on the bottom plate, filled it full of grease and bolted back together. it always worked unlike the 2 LR jacks i had that both rusted up in the bleed screw.

cheers phil

I just use an 8 tonne Armstrong hydraulic jack I had before buying the Defender as the stock hydraulic one was cactus.

If I haven't thrown the OE one out I'll follow Dave's little rebuild tutorial so I'll have a spare to accompany the 2 tonne trolley jack (that doesn't seem to lift 2 tonne  ) and the highlift. You can't have too many jacks. :D

I use hi Lift jacks have one in the 90 and one in the 110

But i use them only with the land rover adaptor which makes them safer to use with ARB bumpers and on the rear cross member

Hi all, I had a standard wind-up jack for my county that stripped its thread during a wheel change.Fortunately for me it jammed before the axle hit the ground so I also recommend an hydraulic under axle jack or a suitably adapted Hi Lift style. Cheers, 130man.
