Hi People,
Still working on my new Defender and I'm sill not there yet...
Bought 'as is' in December but then I had a mad dash to England which ended up with my dad's funeral; then the bush fires up here; it's now been three months.
Anyway, all set up and ready for the Vicroads appointment tomorrow. I got home tonight and suddenly can't get a gear. Can't get neutral either. And the transfer box lever seems to be floating around too. With some effort I can sometimes find a gear but the stick position looks wrong and I can hear gears clashing; a bit like when you don't quite find reverse.
There's a tapped hole in the bell housing between the gearbox and the sump as you look up; a little oil is leaking out but I can't tell from which side it's coming from.
I'll probably have to flat bed it somewhere as I'm going to SA on Sunday for a week but for now, any ideas?
I'm in St Andrews by the way.
And no, no pics until he's fixed!

Thanks.

BTW '97 300 TDi with R380 I presume.

Pull the shifter out there is a grub screw to the selector under the gear stick that can come loose;)

Would I see it if I prise the rubber boot up, or do I delve deeper?

Take the rubber boot off and undo the 4 bolts that hold the shifter to the top of the gearbox and all will be revealed ;)
Where the gearstick sits in a recease type of thing which has a grub screw that secure,s it and locates it to the selector shaft
How do i know cause mine has done the same sort of thing ;)
Hope this is helpfull:cool:

Did the deed last week and all was tight, so not that; however the problem's fixed itself somehow and I've been driving it all week since! I guess it'll happen again so i'll drop the oils and check for metal... could it be worn mounts?
