Usually, the first four digits of Series 1 chassis numbers give you the year, wheelbase and engine, while the last five are the serial number. I had a go with 1230..... series random serial number and came up with a 1960 109 Series 1, which is a sheer impossibility. Somewhere along the way, you've lost a digit from your chassis number. Without my library of LRE mags to hand I can't tell you what it may be, but from the pics I can see it's a LWB Series 1, most likely a 109.
The engine number works as a swb chassis number because all rhd S1 engines were numbered with the same sequences, regardless of where it was destined (home market, export or CKD). Only LHD engines were numbered differently. I'll see what I can find out tonight in my "archives" for you...

Mate that would be great :)
For some reason I thought the Series I LWB was a 107" am I wrong?

G,day going by the radiator front panel and the wing steady bolt is futher from the wheel arch corner, plus it looks like it still has the fully floating rear hubs makes me think that it is a 109" and not a 107" series 1.

Some more numbers these were taken off the rego sticker
Tare 1750
Vin: 12307011
En: 111714672
S/N: 8910180 āGā
Could someone let me know where under the bonnet the chassis bumber can be found or is that already there in the form of the S/N?

A couple of comments VIN's didn't come in until the 1980's.
A series 1 has a "car number" or "chassis number".
You are missing one numeral from your chassis number. I am assuming that it is the fourth digit and also that it is a "6" making:
VIN number : 123607011.
Land Rover series 1 109"

Model 123 Land Rover series 1 109"
Body style Basic
Engine Type 2.0l (1997cc) petrol
Market, steering CKD (Export), RHD
Model year 6 1956
Serial Number 07011

Although it could be a "7" or "8" for a 1957 or 1958 model.
Check out the bolt holding the side of the front mudguard behind the wheel arch if it is about 3" back from the wheel arch then it is a 109".

<snip> Could someone let me know where under the bonnet the chassis bumber can be found or is that already there in the form of the S/N?On CKD vehicles the chassis number is usually stamped on the outside LHS rear spring shackle chassis bracket. You will probably need a wire brush to find it.
For UK assembled vehicles the chassis number is usually on the outside of the RHS front spring hanger chassis bracket.
On some vehicles, particularly those built by Annand & Thompson in Brisbane, the number is on the flat top of the LHS chassis side rail between the engine mount and the radiator.

I would agree with Diana, Jock (Be a brave man not to;))
I reckon there is a 7 missing.
Here's a snip from my workshop manual:

The front of that landie (radiator panel/guards) is the same as a series 1 88. So it is most likely a 109 and either 1957 or 1958.

Speaking of VINs (and in line with this thread); does anyone know where you can get replacement / replica plates made? :(

I've seen them on uk ebay Troy - I'll see if I can find them.

Edit: try http://www.landroverchassisplates.co.uk/ or http://stores.ebay.co.uk/North-East-Graphics_Land-Rover_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ211177014QQftidZ2QQtZ km

The second one doesn't seem to have earlier than S2 but may be worth a try.

Speaking of VINs (and in line with this thread); does anyone know where you can get replacement / replica plates made? :(Troy Yes you can get them with the number stamped from the LRSOC Club shop in the UK although you will need to be a member Land Rover Series One Club (http://www.lrsoc.demon.co.uk/) and as I usually say at this point the Legend mag is worth every penny of the subscription.
You can also get reproduction plates from Scotts Old Auto Rubber in Oakley, Melbourne. The best match for the late Series 1 is the Series 2 type http://www.scottsoldautorubber.com.au/CP368.jpg

Well done Jock! Nice bit of detective work.
It may be worth hanging on to that old rego sticker (what's left of it!) because it sounds like it was registered with an incomplete number.
It would be worth keeping the 'incomplete' number in case you are searching its history when registering it.

Ahh those pommies are masters of understatement!

Here's some shots for inspiration. Don't recall where I found them but a lovely vehicle nonetheless. (I think it's a 107 but you get the idea - I like the colour too)

One of the loveliest restorations I have ever seen on any engine anywhere!
Features I love the most:
1. An original looking battery.
2. The gorgeous cast handle on the heater tap.
3. The decals on the radiator cap etc.
