I notice that you have the chassis up side down for welding.
Remember to make the chassis completely level, (out of winding) before welding in the new (magnificent) angled cross member. I'm sure that you have remembered that anyway, but just in case, I type it in for posterity

hi Tony
the bad news will be the COST.:o

when I rebuilt my engine, I took the trouble to have the camshaft radius ground and hard chromed, also did the same to the rockers and hard chromed.
It gives a much longer lasting coating/finish to those hard working parts. They will last a long time if you then use good oil and change it twice a year.
I mean good oil not elcheapo from K-Mart or Big W.
The machine shop where you took the bits will probably know of a plating works , or someone who will do the work. The actual cost of that fine tuning will not be much in the overall cost of the restoration.

ok so i have tried wire wheel on the chassis and i have tried flappy wheel and now sandblasting and this is my reccomendations where there is big flat areas with no obsticals use the wire wheel any where else use the sand blaster the sandblasting is working fairly well but is extremely slow. i will get some photos up during the week, getting a bit tired now.plans are probably do an hour of sandblasting every afternoon during the week and then pain next weekend.just for those people that are interested when i blow my nose its blackish so respirator on now as well as a beanie to block the sand from getting in my ears and a welding helmet on to protect my face

Tony,
You seem to now be champion in lots of game sites as per the right hand side of your display! maybe you are spending too much time on that and not enough on the restoration?
If its green when you blow your nose, and its land-rover green, remember that old stuff contains lead, so always wear that respirator.
Ear muffs keep out most of the sand and tight fitting goggles are more comfortable than the welding mask?

So what happens in 10 weeks time, exams or more party's every weekend? :tease:

I dont think its really necessary to take the chassis back to bare metal, just removing all loose paint and rust is all that is required.
The old paint if it is sound (not loose or flaky) will help the new undercoat to stick. (just my opinion).
Be careful if you are going to reassemble the diffs.
The crown wheel and pinion have to be set up for the correct mesh and that is really a specialist field, needing special measuring instruments. Fitting bearings an seals are all part of the fit up and I would recommend leaving it all to a Differential axle workshop.
You have done all the hard work in disassembly and cleaning and painting, obtaining all the required parts, so the final reassembly is a very small cost/part of the overall job.
The brakes probably need the cylinder honing or new S/Steel cylinders inserts if you have the $$$$. Exchange shoes are available over the counter as are the rubbers sets.
So go for GOLD, you are doing a fantastic job and every one is cheering, you on :arms:
Have you tried asking your brother to come over and give you a hand?
Two working on a job always makes it go better and 2 heads are better than one. Even if you are blowing black stuff and regurgitating sandy green gilberts, and going deaf with all the noise? [bigwhistle]

The diff adjustments are not hard to do if you follow the workshop manual and make a few special tools.

You will need to make: a peg spanner to move the adjusting nuts; machine a round bar to help measure the pinion protrusion; make a variety of press tools from bar and pipe all of which you can do in the metal shop at school.

The only special tool you will need to buy is a magnetic base and dial indicator, which are very cheap nowadays and can be used to set the front wheel bearings and time the valves in the engine as well.

PM me if you want to see some photos of the tools I made when I did mine,

Cheers Charlie

Just to alleviate the questions etc, I have seen the smurfs protective gear and it seems he is taking his safety seriously....

I get the feeling that he is ready to take on the world now he has this safety gear?.....

I have included a photo I took of him near the shed...with the safety gear on... (it hides the blueness!!)

Tony,
What are you using for the blasting?
There are different types of material and maybe you do not have the right one?
It also helps to have a large capacity compressor tank , larger the better.
its the air behind the "force" that gets the paint off. :rocket:

Tony,
Do you really need to blast the whole chassis? a light rub down with the "Sporting Times" is all that is needed.
2 coats of bituminous paint and a hit with a blow drier.
Hay presto sticky:tease: sticky bang bang Series one......

Landy Smurf
18th June 2010, 03:35 PM
im not sandblasting the whole chassis just where there is surface rust or dirt you know that oily dirt crap.i have a bit more of that crap to get rid of first then one last quick check sanding off any bits that need it and a wash out of the chassis and then blow out the chassis then PAINT

i assembled a rear diff centre this week at school i used the same bearings though as it was only a practice run and i got it right fairly quick which was good, well it took me 20-30 minutes to put the diff carrier in and do up the cups thingy mejigs yu know the threaded locks that puts the load on the bearings and it sets up the backlash and the thou' i did the meshing aswell and it was spot on i didnt have my camera with me then but i will hopefully take some photos when i am doing the proper one, fairly happy with it though

ok so all was going well until today wheni woke up around 9ish dad was down plowing the pddock so i went up to finish the sandblasting then helped my neighbours with firewood then had lunch i went up to the shed cleaned it out waiting for dad to come up and help flip the chassis over an hour later no dad but guests so then they left about 3ish i finished off a bit of welding that went crappy the welder just wasnt working well at all btw the welder machine not me lol so then dad said we cant paint today we have missed our chance and he had to finish off the ploughing so now i am 8 weeks behind on the chassis and the engine is probably going to take longer frustions is an understatement atm:mad:

At the rate you are pushing yourself, I'm not surprised you are sick of it. Take a break and do something else for a weekend, you will regret it if you quit. A bit of distance and a different perspective can make all the difference.

Hang in there,

Thanks for all the pics - so good to see it being done properly, not just a cosmetic job - well done. And one hell of a workshop too.

In the pictures of your chassis, looking from the front, are those stiffening plates inside the ends of the dumb irons, with holes on them?

I haven't seen these before. Most intact dumb irons I have seen have a solid flat face welded flush with the end. Do these brackets normally sit behind the end plate, providing strength where the bumper bolts through?

Is it that this is an 80 and the ones I have seen are 86/88, and different?

Arfa's dumb irons are rusted out at the ends - no end plate left and no evidence of brakets having been there - I think you asked me about that when I posted some pics but I didn't know what you were looking for.

Does anyone have a picture showing how the dumb iron is put together on an 86?

Thanks again

when I did my tractor joints I packed them with Fluid grease, guarantee that it will not leak out......
also with all the pitting the seal will not prevent ordinary oil from leaking out every time you turn the steering wheel.
The seal wipes the surface of the ball all the time and consequently oil is dispersed over the ball joint every time the wheel moves.
That's land rovers for you.
Same happens with your knee joints , except that you dont need fluid grease :p
BTW the coating on the swivels is hard chrome so dont sand it off Master Tony,

Tony, I'm not sure if you are aware that the springs on series ones are matched side for side.
That means that the springs for the drivers side have more tension than the passenger side,(curvature) to compensate for the drivers weight and also the petrol tank.
So dont get them mixed up or you will be very loppy loo loo.....
and that is not becoming to a singleton master restorer,
btw top job so far..

Hey there,
This has been a marvellous thread and congratulations to you for all that you have achieved. You have every right to be very proud.
Re the springs, a workshop manual will give the settings for each side - front and rear - I have a couple of original manuals here and can give you the spring settings if you need.
Again, great work and well done. It is great to see you on the home stretch.
Kind regards

Hey, my pleasure.
My father bought our 1951 80" in 1960. Spent many wonderful years travelling the Victorian high country during the 60's and 70's before I shifted it to the Victorian Mallee in the early 80's. I was rebuilding it for about the 3rd time, but unfortunately lost it in the 2009 Victorian Black Saturday fires down in Gippsland. An enormous amount of history gone but such is life. Actually, Olmate picked up many of my bits and pieces. I sincerely hope things are smoothing out for him.
I had a look at my workshop manuals and as you said the springs with the greatest arc appear to be on the drivers side.
Again, great thread . . . love your work . . . and admire your passion.
Great job.
Cheers
Maffra

for some reason I thought that your 'spray suit" would have been blue:eek:

and

the chassis was going to be blue too!!!:o

maybe to make it look the goods, get that motor etc "soda or bead blasted" whilst out, only exposed wiring anything bakelite or similar at threat from bad finish with that so should be able to take complete -get done, wash off and or paint and install, will then look new and should only cost $50 or $100 depending on who's near you.... (Ive been quoted $600 for a 109, inside/outside/engine and engine bay with a soda blaster!). It gets all the nooks and crannys looking fantastic.

well done mate...

and lets just say what if all springs are the same.what could i do to fix that without getting new springs

If you have left and right springs the same it will lean to the right. You probably have a spring works nearby that will reset the springs. I think Diana has posted a list of spring cambers somewhere in this forum, but I am not certain it included Series 1.

I would be inclined to reset the original springs if possible, rather than get new ones, as the leaf thickness used in Series Landrovers (except for rear 109) is no longer available, and the thinner leaves of the originals give better results.

At first glance, you would think that the lean would be to the left, since the engine is offset to the left. But masses to the right, not balanced by anything except the slight engine offset, include the transfer case and handbrake, steering column, steering relay, sprung proportion of two prop shafts, battery, fuel tank, and, often, the driver. These are all further offset than the engine is. The Series Landrover is sensitive to this uneven mass distribution, because of the long travel suspension and the lack of sway bars. It is worse in the swb because the rear springs are further inboard.

Nice work Tony!

It is probably too late, as I suspect that you have already painted the pedals, but I noticed that like mine the raised bumps had worn off in the same place. I restored mine by holding the MIG torch very still and giving it a high-voltage burst for about 2 seconds on top of each worn bump.

The reason I mention it, is that a picky inspector may not pass it at licencing, although an alternative is to fit rubber pedal covers,

Another good tip is to get or make a copper washer to spot the little lumps on the pedals. After a little practice they will all come out the same.........

well i had just over 100 pages saved on my computer and usb and cd and when i went to open them yesterday at 10 am it wouldnt open them i tried on other pcs still wouldnt work so i went to my nans pc and started to redo it 5 hours later and it wouldnt print the photos and it wouldnt save it was saving as i went i made sure of that so then i went to my uncles place started at 7 pm had to redo from the beginning got about 60 pages done and couldnt go on i had 2 hours sleep got up at 630 came out to my dads loaded it and went into school to drop it off and my teacher was very disappointed because of my folio and everyone kept saying that it sucks it doesnt have an engine in it to test it and i agree bcoz they were not there for the 300 hours i havce put into it so they wouldnt know if things worked or not.i am so emotional physically and mentally drained i have had way to much sugar honey ice tea in my life in this last month espicially.lucky we dont have a swear jar around here other wise i would be broke well i probably will be when i finish this project when ever that will be not for some time anyways.
Tony,
You have the satisfaction of knowing what you did and how it now looks.
Comments from others that refer to lack of engine are typically immature of that age group.
You know the pain so try to ignore negative souls.
Computer glitches happen and usually at the worst possible time, we have all experienced that, some more than others.
But you made the effort to rectify the situation, and teachers who are insensitive to students efforts probally should not be in that venerated position?
This project is just one part of your HSC and all the other subjects are just as important as the landie, but also need your undivided attention.
Its time to move on and give your best to the rest of the curriculum.
Thats what matters at the moment
Good luck and dont give up, Australia needs young men of you calibre and dedication...

Tony I am very disappointed with what you said:(

You have great friends here to give advice and help when they could:)

You have done a terrific effort for someone so young...restoring landy's....so yes Australian LR enthusiasts will be 1 less restorer:(

Hey Smurf

Get your teacher and your class to log on to AULRO (as guests) to see your thread with 8819 views and 444 replies, and the list of people who have learned things from you while you've been learning.

Seriously, in this day and age, your ability to seek information and communicate with the world to solve problems is an essential skill, and this thread is a document of your work and methods that should be part of your assessment. Not to mention the accolades you have had from the many masters you have been apprenticed to online.

You're an inspiration, mate. Send the link to your teacher.

I would do that. I would also be interested to know why AULRO was banned. I have difficulty thinking of any valid reason.

I am astounded at the effort you have put into this project, and the ability you have shown in doing it. Certainly more than I was capable of at your age!

Agreed - and your enthusiasm and moral support for others, as you have expressed in countless replies, is to be commended too. I'm looking forward to as many of us as possible all getting together one day. :)

Best of luck with the HSC and for whatever road you follow.

You know, Albert Einstein's school teachers told him he was an "underachiever"! I think, when very talented students make themselves apparent, it can often be the teacher who is last to realise.

I say this because your effort, ability and enthusiasm for this project should have been obvious all along - and fostered - not acted on by banning AULRO.

Keep being involved in your true loves - because excellence can really only be achieved in areas where we have interest and passion. You have found at least one of these! ;)

Well, maybe not really.... :) Nevertheless, I do think it's the case. But I'll also say this - I think teachers are all doin their very best, but the regimented system just doesn't fit all sizes. It's a pet topic of mine - my Grandfather was an outside the square Mathematics educator, so perhaps it's in the blood to a degree.
