I know it's been a long time - but I'm a bit slow, you know.
Had the 1998 xeDi for 7 or 8 months now and lot's of stuff has
happened in that time, such as moving from Tasmania to Southern
WA. Been doing lots of bits and pieces, but just haven't had the time
to do a full service. Looking at the Schedules I can't find anything
about renewing gearbox oil on the PG1 gearbox. Then I read somewhere
that it is "Filled for Life" - is this kosher? - Garry, your list says "Check
gearbox oil level" - nothing about renewal.

Your reading is correct and also applies to the IRD and rear diff - gearbox, IRD and Diff are top up only according the RAVE and Haynes service schedules.
Interestingly the Getrag manual box in the TD4 requires the oil in the gearbox to be changed every 160,000km bit the IRD and Diff is the same as above.
I change mine every 50,000km to provide peace of mind.
Cheers

Mmm... my son and I have gone over this a few times - and concluded that I should change it anyway on the basis
of the fact that we don't know what's in there. Even though we have a reasonably complete service history - and
most of it by LR that doesn't seem to be an absolute guarantee - on this basis - he (my son) has had a 2002 Defender
for 6 months now that he only uses sporadically (because he is flying in and out) - and has come to servicing issues
for his - and trying to hunt down some MTF94 - the LR service guys in Albany say they use something else (Castrol ????).
So, our only real guarantee that we know what is in there (even if we never change it in the future) - is to change
it at least the once - then top it up so we know what's there.
We can get MTF94 from LR in Perth.
So - the bottom line - change and make up my own schedule :twobeers:
Thanks Garry

You will not find Caltex MTF 94
See this recent thread on R380 gearbox oils.

No that's Texaco - LR in Perth say they have it. We can't find it anywhere else but they get it by the barrel and will sell us some.
WHat do you use when you do yours?

Castrol Syntrans works great. Just a bit expensive.
