Ok i got a new cargo barrier for the 110 this week.
Main reason for one was as a dog guard but a bit of protection is always good.

I looked at a Milford one but was a bit shocked at $595 not inculding fitting (well fit it myslelf anyway )

But then found Ausguard who do a defender cargo barrier . But was $375 ( not inculding fitting but wanted £80 if i wanted it fitted). more than £200 less than the Milford . Still has all the same saftey specs and everything

Well i fitted the Ausguard cargo barrier yesterday . very very pleased with it . Same as milford, and very strong and easy to fit into the 110

Looks good mate - and the added bonus of keeping the kiddies that little bit safer.

Cheers

Looks very similar to the Milford, except for the top brackets. I take it they bolt on to the C-piller bracket. What is the bottom half like?

Shame no-ones doing one locally for the new Defender's.

Yeah the top has a bracket that bolts to the U channel under the window and loops over the top to the bar. Saves having to cut about the panels ( therefore you can take it out and show no signs it has been in .
The bottom of the barrier goes down to the floor and has L shape brackets that hold it down to the floor. As i said easy to fit

The only major differance betweeen this and Milford is you have to wait for 5 working days for them to make it as they don't stock them but are made to order. But for $200 differance i could live with that :)

Does it have the stretch straps that the milford has? These things are great. Where I used to work we did crash tests and found that when barriers are hit by things these stretch straps stopped the barriers breaking away from their mountings.

The first crash test the barrier broke away and the dummy was pushed out the front window  With the stretch straps the barrier stayed in place. It still wasn't pretty but was survivable. All in a 30k crash!

No it does not have the streach straps but did not see them on a mates Milford carrier .

Be surprised if anything got though this barrier :)

It certainly looks pretty good :)

Either way I think these things give really good rollover protection too. I know I've seen pictures on this forum of rolled over LR's that were flat from the bullbar to the tip of the crash barrier :) To me - this is just as important as their ability to stop stuff.

Very true about the rollover stuff

When mine went upside down I was pretty glad I had it, as there were 3 of us in the front seat and a fair bit of gear in the back. Could have caused us some serious head injuries.

But more importantly when I pulled it out to switch over to my other Defender we could see in the rear bulkhead; the mounts had torn the metal from all the force pushing it down :o

Hi dm_td5! Hope all is well up there in the NT.
Just thought I would let you know that I spoke to Milford last Wednesday regarding the availabilty of a cargo barrier for the Pumas and they told me it will be ready in July 2009. Hope this is of some use.

Good to see they've decided to do one after all. I've actually put the OEM LR one in which I imported from the UK.

Below are a couple of photos of a 200 TDI defender that I rolled on the Pacific Hwy Hornsby. I would have been lucky to have been doing 60KPH.

I had just come off the freeway driving from Coff's Harbour sitting on 100KPH. If the accident had happened on the freeway I'm not sure I would be typing this:angel:

You will see from the photo of the 110 on its side (roof shot) the cargo barrier wore through the roof just near the Alpine window (road). I think it did its jopb.

The police recon I picked up a nail from a previous truck spillage and when I rounded the courner the tyre was deflating and then flipped.

Hi RR, There's more information on this thread from Craig and myself: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/72343-new-cargo-barrier-puma.html
It will all depend on your vehicle, though the most recent feedback I had from a recent UK install was it went in without an issue. Interestingly their's had the bolt and plate kit as 2 shrink wrapped cards where as Craig and I only had a single card with all the parts. I suspect LR may have made a couple of mod's. My biggest issue was that I had to re-tap two of the mounting holes above the C-pillar and get new bolts as the thread stripped undoing the bolts:mad:

Hi, I just bought a pre-Puma Milford Carrier for my 08 Puma. Reading the notes below got me a bit concerned (i.e. the position of seat clips and sloped wheel arch). Although correct me if I'm wrong, if you remove the seat clip plastic surround (not too sure why it is there anyway) and offset the base of the carrier by 60mm towards the rear of the vehicle (i.e. so that the Milford barrier base sits up against the seat clips), making Milfords installation measurement 930mm, instead of 990mm seems to be ok. I checked under the vehicle and the hole position seems fine too.

The top mount would remain in the same location... need to check again.

With the sloped wheel arch I can't see the issue, except for a bit of a gap??

What you say makes sense. You may find the top mounts are stressed a little with the 60mm move back at the base. There certainly isn't an issue with the different shaped sides the issue is with both the seat (and head rests) and the locking mechanism. If you are correct and the plastic shroud on the seat clamps is just cosmetic then that may well take care of that issue (I never considered that). I suspect that the bigger problem will come from the rear seat itself. The seat back is considerably different and the centre seat has the belt reel at the top as well as the head rest. The seats are also thicker and whilst I haven't checked against my Tdi I suspect they protrude further back into the load area.

Milford barriers (and a few others I've seen) all come with plastic blanks in the 3 seat positions for just that purpose.

Yeah i have those and you put them where ever you want. Just have not put them on when i took the photo. Because of the nature of the 110 and differant crap bars (that they can be differant ) thay told me they supply the plastic blanks and then cut out the hole where you need it

I have a LR dog guard fitted to my 110. Cost me £60 say A$150. Am not sure difference between a dog guard and a cargo barrier.

I will say that these are extremely good things to have fitted. My has been tested in anger! I crossed a ditch at the perfect 45 degree angle. Only slight problem it was at 80 kph! Ripped off the FOS wheel and bent the chassis. Nothing come through the barrier. OK the barrier moved on its top mounts but there again I did manage to buckle roof above C pillar!

Since my policy is only soft stuff in passenger cab I walked away without a bruise.

YES these guards are extremely well worth the while fitting.

Anyone know of another option other than Milford?

Apparently they might be able to do them if you get it fitted at their factory, as they have no fitting instructions, and would have to "make it up as they go". They're in Sydney, so they can't help me up here in Brisbane :(

Bit ****-poor really - they've fitted them before, so why didn't they keep a template or something?

The cheapest in Australia I can find are the Black Widow half height for around $420 ($480 fitted), and the Milford for around $548.

I did a bit of research, and I found these barriers:
Mail Order 4x4 GENUINE Landrover DEFENDER Special Offers (http://www.mailorder4x4.com/acatalog/GENUINE_Landrover_DEFENDER_Special_Offers.html)

I got a reply saying they ship to Australia, but no pricing on shipping yet.

Given the current exchange rate the buy price for the half height is about $150, and the full height is about $168. It all depends on shipping costs now, but I reckon it should still end up a fair bit cheaper than the local products.

Also, the prices on snorkels seem good. Mail Order 4x4 Snorkels (http://www.mailorder4x4.com/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Snorkels_77.html). I just can't decide which one I should go for.

I called into the Milford factory on the way to work today and asked how they were going with the development of a cargo barrier to fit the 07+ model Defenders. They had told me in March this year that it should be ready in July.
Apparently it has been developed and is currently in pre production trials. I was told that stock would be available on the 28th August.
I'll go back at the end of the month, get one fitted and put some photos up.

I had OL try to fit a pre 07 Milford to mine back in October 2007. It won't work, at least not with the Outback drawers in too.

Seeing this picture prompted me to start looking for a roll cage. I always knew there is a safety risk involved in buying the Defender but I thought of it more as something that can be controlled by sensible driving.

In reading about what happened to you in this situation, it never really occured to me a rollover was really ever probable. Now I think differently. I could never live with myself if I had my kids in the car and didnt take all precautionary saftey measure to avoid a fatal rollover whilst owning a Defender. Maybe I am being overboard but, thats the safest way to be outside of never owning a Defender.
