oil or grease lubed

hi all,, i have a defender 110 2004, iv been looking at diffs and wheel bearings, just so i no 100%

on the rear diff,, are the wheel bearings lubed buy the rear diff oil,

an on the front i no that the diff/CV/ an bearings are seporated buy seals,, iv read alot an like the idear of having the seals taken out so the CVs an wheel bearings are lubed buy the diff oil,;)

so if i get water in,, i change the diff oil i no at the same time the CVs an bearings are with clean oil as well,;)

is this werth wiel doing, an whats the worst that can happen,,

I'm not sure about your model but if you pull off the rubber end caps I suspect you'll see grease not oil.

The rears are easy to convert to oil-lubed on Discos and Rangie Classics but I'm not sure about the Defender. I expect it's the same - remove hub and remove inner oil seal from axle housing. Remove single lip seal from hub and fit double lipped seal.

I haven't done the fronts.

Your wheel bearings are greased all round. Yes, there are seals separating all the compartments.

The front CV's will have Land Rover's 'One Shot' grease in them, this is just a Texaco NLGI 00 lithium grease with 3% moly, nothing special, just very thin (like a very, very heavy oil)
You can run oil in there like the earlier models and remove the stub axle seal but there is no level and drain plugs on anything from about '97 on.
The only way I've been able to drop fluid is undo a swivel beaing bolt and it's messy, and there's no guarantee it will seal OK after either.

If you are going to convert the hubs to oil lubed, as Ron said use only the RTC3511 seal, it's the best to use. The later seals are rubbish and don't keep water out, let alone oil in.

Oil Oil Oil. Convert all NOW before all the drive flanges wear out etc. There are plenty of threads here, I think 'The good oil' has a few...
