air compressors

im thinking of putting an onboard compressor in my 2004 disco what is the best type to get and where should i mount it as im also going for a duel battery set up so space under the bonnet maybe short or is there a better place to have the second battery too :)

mate this going to sound really stupid to some but mate i got one of these last yr for $36 and have given it a flogging and it still is going strong even if we blow this one now we have saved big time and i will purchase an other

JB, there are a number of threads relating to this issue with good ideas and photos of where to fit a compressor and second battery and its worth searching. Not sure what engine you have but if a TD5 following comments also apply.

If you want to fit a second battery under the bonnet with either an ARB or Pirahna battery tray (former is better value for money), you won't really have roon for compressor too. Alternative suggested locations for the second battery are under the car on LHS where the std LR compressor is fitted (assuming you also don't have air suspension), or in rear panier if you have a 5 seater. Alternatives for a compressor are in the space behind the air vents at rear, in space behind head light or, as suggested by Cucinadio, using a portable one.

If you have a 5 seater, my preference is for using the ARB tray to mount the compressor under the bonnet and mount the second battery in one of the rear paniers, mainly because of the battery. The largest battery you'll get under the bonnet is a 55Ah (using the standard trays) whereas you can put a much larger one in the rear, say a 100Ah. Heat under the bonnet is also a killer for the battery IMHO.

This is true if you use those trays, but if you make your own tray, you can fit a battery the size of an N70, like this:D

I'm putting my compressor in a section I made when building my drawers.

If I didn't have this place I would put the compressor in one of the rear panniers, this way it's away from the heat of the turbo and has easy access out the back door.

I have one of the newer ARB compressors and have mounted it under the drivers seat of my 04 Discovery. Keeps the dust and heat away. I was told the biggest killer of compressors is the underbonnet heat.

i have had a look in the back and there dosnt seem to be much room behind the vents for a compressor mine being 7 seater but will have a search trough the forums for battery positions etc thanks :cool: as i would prefer to not have these in the engine bay
