:oYep you read right.

My old man has a Freelander 01 model, just had it serviced @$585:o:o
He asked them to have a looksy at the tapping noise under the hood. They told him that it's a collapsed lifter, and the repair bill was going to be pushing 15k, now I know were in a recession and all but this is a bit of a scam if ever I have heard. They wan't to rebuild both heads in the process.
Anyway after hearing this I did a little re-search and found out that the 2.5V6 is famous for the butterflies in the inlet manifold wearing and causing the tapping noise. Any other freelander owner had this?
A good nic second hand unit is $695.....big differance. I would do the work myself but he's in central NSW and I in Darwin.

Any way, he's heading to Canberra in June and wanted to drop it off to a mechanic there while they jet off on holidays. Is there anyone in Canberra that you would trust to work on your Landy? Without getting ripped off.

TIA

Avoid the Government then, they'll rip anyone off given half a chance:p

In my view there is no one in Canberra who has the experience to do this work. Certainly no better than somewhere like Darwin.

Sydney would be the closest place.

Dunno Garry, I'ved seen a few Freelanders at Canberra Motor Works in Mitchell on my semi frequent visits there over the past few years.

I trust them with my Rangie. If I still had a Freelander, I'd trust them with it too.

Cheers, Paul.

Very common. The upper section of the inlet manifold gets replaced.

Try a Landy specialist first - I have heard of some developing a 'replacement' section for the top manifold section that does away with the butterflies altogether.

Canberra Motor Works. They are a land Rover specialist. Ray Spence, the owner, is an ACT recognised certifying engineer who is used a lot by the hotrod fraternity. I trust them with my Disco and I am fussy. Totally reputable and easy to deal with. Telephone 02 6241 8777.

When you say the butterflies are wearing is it the shaft that wears?.If it is you could just bush them like a carby, costs about $70. Pat

Yea I did wonder wether it could be bushed myself. Don't know as I have never layed eyes on the part myself.

Cheers for comments

Why does the Rover V6 require such an expensive repair?

I thought my Rover V8 repair was over the top when I had to get the block resleeved due to a slipped liner. But $15K sounds like way way too much!

Not a good indication of Land Rover quality or reliability!
