I have been thinking of making a bearing nut spanner/socket for a couple of days now, so i decided to give it a go the sarvo, with dads help:)
I wasn't shore where to post this thread, figured it wasn't realy a project or tut, so i thought general would do:angel:

It's a nice tight fit, just got to weld it up now, we were quite happy with the turn out:D

Mine came in the back of my Landy when I bought the Blue Defender :D
BTW did you know they fit the caps on Maxi-Drives? Thats what I originally thought it was for :p
Upon saying that I do admire your idea, I was just thinking the other day as well. You see I need a light bar for roof spotties, and I thought yes got it, I'll find an old nudge bar and modify the mounts. I knew where there was one too. But it had gone :(
But just now I had a bright idea :) wreckers are your friends :p

thats a nice tool........
but it still needs to have a hole drilled through it on one end.......on the two opposite flats......
so you can stick a bar through it for a bit of leverage........
the locking nut needs to be done up firm.......
im greek.......i use a hammer and chisel.......

Next will be some holes or similar, maybe something for a 1/2" ratchet;)
We have also previously used a hammer and chisel:D

hammer and chisel was we used to use in the dealership..........
because we could never find the hub nut socket when we needed it......
its easy to make a half inch ratchet fit if you can drill a half inch square hole.........
otherwise......just weld a socket or similar in the end.......
but just a simple pin through it will do the job.........you can get it more that tight enough with a screw driver stuck through it.......
the lock tab will stop it all from coming undone........what youve made so far is perfect for the job.......

Yeah the ones i've seen are just the simple screw driver through the holes;)
But we are now thinking of cutting it in half and getting 2 out of it, it would probably be abit hard for the screw driver method when it's half the length it is now;) could be wrong:angel:

not at all.......
weld a tube or bit of pipe across the end.......
and put your screw driver through that.........
or just weld a handle on it.......but this will take up more space in a tool kit.......

Got both of them pretty much done today (we cut it in half to get 2 out of it)
Ended up using a 19mm nut welded to the back plate, works well for doing it up:)

Hi Gavin TDI300
You wrote I went to the hardware store plumbing section and bought one for $7.
Gavin what was this spanner for as I checked local hardware and he didn't have anything like this size.
What store did you get it from as really interested in one.

Just back from the UK with a suitcase full of LR spares. Included is a hub nut spanner, cost 3 pounds 98 pence ($8) from Paddocks.
So the next person going north could bring some back. Alternatively, if anyone in the Bris area is desperate, mine's available to hire for the price of a beer :-)
Having said that, your's looks a good solid job. I'd echo the comment about drilling a couple of holes for a lever though.

Hot Water Cylinder heating element tube spanner. I have a hub nut wrench I got from 4wds years ago but it is a bit loose, I think it is 53mm & the real deal should be 52mm or somesuch. I had read on here that these heating elemnt tube wrenchs are the go but when the local Bunnings had them for about $23 from memory I decide to make do with what I had. not like I was using it every day like. I just like buying new tools. I think it was in the plumbing section, maybe electrickery. More discussion about these tube sockets here http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-chatter/43902-wheel-bearing-locking-nut-tool-2.html
