Has anyone heard of a fuel pump failure in the D3 or RRS TDV6?

I mean the worst sort of failure, when the pump craps itself internally and fills the whole fuel system from fuel tank to injectors with metal particles.

Yes it will be the HP fuel pump. The whole fuel system including injuctors needs to be replaced.
Known issue with MY07 onwards with the first of the higher pressure pumps.
It should be under warranty. If it belt is not tensioned properly the bearings will shatter again and you need the lot done again.
Who is going to do your work?

Repair already done under warranty by dealer. As far as I can work out they replaced the lot, but I suppose I had better check!

For about a week before it declared itself there was a slight noise, like a leaf in a fan. I took it to the dealer, but they couldn't isolate it.

Three days later, when I drove home one night a cloud of white smoke issued from under the vehicle. Diesel was leaking and making it's way on to the exhaust.

Land Rover Assist -> Tow Truck -> Dealer ->Repair

The question is will this keep happening?

Not if the new HP pump part was fitted and they did it properly. Someone had it happen three times, twice dealer install issue.:o
The part number should be on the paperwork they gave you, (I'll see if I can find the new part no.), so should an itemised list of the work done. The tank should be replaced as it can end up with shards in it.
Which dealer did the work?

Is it appropriate to name names here? I don't have any problem with the service and care, in fact it was quite good. I will PM you.

Wasn't going to name anyone, publicly.
I would see if you can get the paperwork, some dealers are reluctant to give it as they usually havn't completed it by the time you collect.

We have just had this happen to us this week. Purchased our MY07 D3 not quite 2 years ago. It started just like you said a leaf in fan went on for about a week then total breakdown and the metal particles. So glad to see that your dealer repaired under warranty, the dealer where we broke down is not so helpful.

Sorry am new to this forum, still working it out.

As i said in my quote we have just had this happen to us this week. The D3 is not even 2 years old. Ticking sound under the bonnet for about a week then total breakdown. Was happy to hear that yours was fixed under warranty. How long was your vehicle in the workshop?

Went in Monday morning (by fast tow-truck) and I picked it up Friday afternoon. The timetable was something like this:

Monday - diagnose the problem OH NO! need to contact Landrover to ok repair
Tuesday - received ok from Landrover most parts on hand but needed some from Melbourne
Wednesday - all parts available remove old fuel system
Thursday - keep at it chaps!
Friday - Reassembled by lunchtime then testing washing oily fingerprints off etc.

I guess it may take longer to get all the parts together in Bundy
