View Full Version : Recovery points for Series trucks??

No problems at the back - a decent rated shackle through the towing tongue is fine there, but what to do at the front?
I have a bumper made out of 6mm thick parallel flange channel. but it has the same 4 mounting bolts as a standard bumper. I`ve used one of those 10000lb rated hooks with a spreader plate behind it (bolted to the top of the bumper, but these make me a bit uneasy - if the bolts holding the bumper go, then someone is going to wear 25kg of steel...
The pommie mags all show those swivel recovery points, mounted flush - is there a locally available alternative to these? and wouldn`t they also only be as strong as the mounting bolts (bar to chassis)?
Pictures would be appreciated...
Not that I ever get stuck and need recovering, but on I occasionally help owners of lesser vehicles when they can`t keep up with me...

I'm not really sure on that one sorry
They don't have the Hayman Reese hitch which makes it a bit difficult
Sorry :(

This was my solution to the front recovery point problem. Hope it helps:

loop a chain through the spring and up and over the top of each chassis rail.
join with a big shackle and you wind up with something like this
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/06/84.jpg
I used 2x 1.5t bow shackles to join both sides of the chain to a 3.5t bow shackle in front of the upright.
1 per chassis rail with a bridal strap.
series Recovery point complete.(works on all leaf spring suspension that has the spring shackle at the outer most side of the chassis)
total cost $25

I've got the standard shackle mounting brackets held on with 4 grade 8 ht bolts. seems to work well for everything I have given them to do yet!

Grover looks the goods! Does anyone have pics of rear recovery options/pics for the Series?

Bit hard to see in this pic, but I have the standard D-rings fitted to Military IIAs, which work well and can be bought aftermarket (you can just see them in the pic - recessed slightly behind the bar. However, when recovering on an angle, thay are a bit of a PITA when you have a military brush guard as well, so when I made up a custom bumper, I made the side plates double as recovery points. I designed them so they connect to the front spring bolts as well. I also designed them to protect the front dumb irons from rocks and logs.

Since I don't have a rear tow bar, I made a rear recovery point using two pieces of 15mm thick angle iron welded together, to make a t-shape. It works very well. I can take a pic if anyone is interested.

Or you could try this approach - hook a winch rope through the rear trailer hook and pull.

This is the current set up at the rear of Basil.. Can I remove the tow ball and use a pin in place for a recovery point?

Plenty of people just put a shackle through the tow ball hole.

Just make sure that your rear crossmember is sound and not full of bog. I nearly lost the back of one of mine once due to a previous owners devious repair!

Here are some closeups of my recovery points. (Landie is wet and dirty so pics look a bit crap...)
Rear (2 pieces of angle steel welded together then galvanised). Holes are just large enough to fit the pin of a 4.5T SWL Shackle through.

Front - D-rings are great, but these are easier to use and protect the dumb irons.

Finally mounted the gunnebos onto the front of Basil - a mate at tech made up some steel plates to bolt in behind the bumper - should go ok. Also got the towball off the back  so will use a shackle there.

Great looking SII!
Can you make the front hooks sit horizontal, not vertical? I would be worried about catching one offroad.
On the rear, most people just use a pin (e.g. made from a grade 8 or class 10.9 bolt) that is held in place by a split pin. Your setup should be fine, but a pin will load the attachment bolts more uniformly.

Thanks I.R.
They spin through 360 degrees, so the only way I can see them being horizontal with the bar is if Basil is on his side....which is not that hard to conjure up in my minds eye...
The bar isn't wide enough to mount them any higher....

Hi Blknight.aus,
Could you repost the image of your recovery setup? Not having to fix questionable jate rings or d rings sounds appealing to me :)

As people cannot edit old posts, I'm happy to reinsert the images into their posts if they send them to me.
Would this style work or be strong enough? I bought these ones off this cut-wing but never fitted them to my County.

Did anyone ever come up with a true solution? I can’t seem to see the old images. Have a drop plate and a tow hitch but not suitable for a recovery.
